Hey everyone! Thank you for all the support on our first guide and this growing channel. In addition to the Giveaway question, I'd love to invite you to comment any other tips/tricks you think we missed or would benefit other players. Feel free to ask any questions about the game here or whenever I'm live over at Twitch.tv/Inabeta

Can you do an ironclad a20 card review? I know it all depends, but an overview of most possibilities and synergies for every card could be a very nice and popular video.

If I understood you right, you said it's good to draw cards even if you don't have the energy to play them. I don't see how that helps - doesn't it just mean you won't have the option to play that card if it makes sense the next round? Thanks!
@InaBeta
@InaBeta 2 жыл бұрын
@@Travoid Like everything in this game, it depends. Ideally, you're using draw cards in the beginning of your turn to get to other things you want to play that turn (when you still have the energy to) Generally, drawing at the end of your turn is pretty fail, but if you look at your draw pile and see a bunch of garbage you just want to get past to get to your shuffle, then yeah you might want to even if you don't have energy left. My main point is that draw is an extremely powerful (maybe the most powerful) mechanic in this game and it's importance should not be understated. It has a variety of uses and when to utilize it will always depend run to run and turn to turn.

So glad I found this channel. I've played this game for a total of over 100 hours. 92 runs, with only 1 "victory". The victory came from a custom run where I basically gave myself as much advantage as possible. On average, I typically only make it to about halfway through the 2nd act, or die early on in Act 3. Only a few weeks ago I realized that you shouldn't take every single card reward. My decks would end up so bloated and the really good cards were rarely drawn during fights. The main thing I learned from this video is to not avoid the elite fights, and to be better at balancing regular fights with mystery rooms. Up until now, I basically avoided elites as much as possible, and if I were given a choice between a fight or a mystery room, I'd always hit that question mark hoping for a relic.

As a Slay the Spire player who already spent more than 300 hours on different platforms on the game I can say that your guide was still very helpfull for me. On the one hand it is nice to know that most of my decissions in the game are somehow in line with your tips on the other hand the "practice things which you dont like" tip is something which I have to apply more in my playthroughs. After a period of time you just stick with the same 2-3 stratetgies. Which is dangerous and hinders you to climb up on ascension ranks. Well done!

These are some good tips. You say in the pinned comment to give tips that we think you missed. I think that there are some higher level ideas that can earn small advantages that can turn a loss into a win. The first is that there are some relics such as nunchaku, ink bottle, and happy flower which will keep a counter between fights. It is generally good practice to set these up at the end of the fight when you can be a little more flexible with your card choices so that you can get their effects on the first turn (arguably the most important turn) of the next fight. Additionally, another concept that helped me was paying attention to when I used my draw cards. If you have 1 card in your draw pile, and you play a draw 2 card, this means that everything in your discard pile will go back into your draw pile. This means that all the cards in your hand are not getting shuffled into your deck meaning you will have to go all the way through your deck again in order to see it. For this reason, if you are in this situation and have a strong card that you want to play as often as possible, you should probably play it before the draw card.

Even perfect builds in our comfort zone can end in tears, lol, but if we had just experimented with a few different tricks instead of passing up on them, they would have made all the difference. I've played it a few times. The characters get more complex as they keep making them. Ironclad is real simple. Build up attack power and/or block, and just fight until you win. After that it gets a little trickier, and a little trickier, until you get to the Watcher, and people are still trying to figure her out.

I feel like all these "is x card good?" questions (which I asked my fair share too) are like asking "is Qe4 a good move?" in chess. It all depends on the position (however, it's such a central square that _in general_ it's likely not a good early game move)
@InaBeta

Exactly why I discourage that line of thinking; it simply isn't asking the right questions or promoting the right mindset to improve at this.

Thank you for this guide. I’m new to StS, and only have a few runs under my belt. I am an old MtG player though, so I was already drawn towards deck synergy and card draw, and I’m pleased to say I beat my first climb. My one quibble is about Runic Dome. The Defect is so self-contained it typically doesn't matter that they can't see intent. What would they change? Where the lightning goes? Wait to evoke dark because the wrong enemy is weakest? How much frost to channel? A lot of The Defect's choices are taken away inherently. Meanwhile, having 1 extra energy is never bad. The other three may have to weigh Runic Dome heavily or play with the wiki open, but not always Defect.
@InaBeta
@InaBeta 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, Runic Dome is probably the hardest to fit into any playthrough by far. Also most difficult to see when it's appropriate to do so vs when it isn't.

This video was great--always nice to see fellow spire addicts lol It's difficult to say who my favorite class is, but I would probably have to say ironclad--i feel like he has the most varied scaling packages at A20H (exhaust, strength, block). The other classes can often feel a bit more similar in terms of card evaluations later on in the game; I almost always want a catalyst/echo form/talk to the hand in act 3, but with ironclad i cant think of too many scaling cards i would almost always take in act 3

One of the things I've found extremely useful is keeping an eye out for "Aces." Since you know from the beginning of the Act which boss you'll be facing, if you run across a card that specifically counters that boss, it's often worth picking up. Cards like Fire Breathing for the Hexaghost, or Judgment+ vs the Collector.
@InaBeta
@InaBeta 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, this is a common strategy of more advanced players and dovetails with the advice of "add answers to your deck"; know what you could face in any act and add in things that will help you with those challenges.

I struggled to beat my first run for many many tries. After watching this video I literally made it in my first try. I made choices I would normally never have made (such as the Snecko Eye, which randomizes any chance of winning in my eyes) and got cards that let me draw more cards. It seems I suck at strategy games. Anyway, thanks for this video, it helped me a lot
@InaBeta
@InaBeta Жыл бұрын
Hey, you stumbled across some powerful synergies! Also, more card draw (especially innate as with Snecko Eye) is powerful for just about any deck. Snecko definitely doesn't randomize your chance of winning, just the cost of cards. In return, you get innate card draw and the ability to grab all the impactful, high cost cards you want without worrying nearly as much about energy (you still want more energy, but you care a lot less about a deck full of 3 cost cards as they will often cost less than that when drawn). Anyways, I hope you saw the power of these mechanics in play and can apply them to future runs! Additionally, don't beat yourself up; this is a really complex, difficult game to begin with and everyone struggles with it at times (yes, even the best of the best players). Keep at it, and good luck in The Spire!

The difference is that Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't force you to discard your hand every turn. In this game, without the "retain" ability, you will actually draw more cards than you can use and end up discarding cards that you really needed on the next turn. Now, you have to wait several turns potentially to redraw it. There are exceptions, but the general rule in Spire is that too much draw= inactivity.
