I don’t understand why someone would need to steal, act like you are the pharmacist, or just want to talk about someone’s information so blindly. This is common sense and respect. Thank you girlie for sharing this information!!

@@OHMYLEAH08, I am so hurt I was working for Rite Aid, the Pharmacist I worked under treated me so poorly. I was scheduled 36 hours each week, and only received a 15 minute break. I would receive another 15 minute sporadically. I became ill and ended up leaving 😢. I never received the full training to become a Pharmacy Tech, and was utilized to do cashiering duties. I would love to return, but under a different company. That experience has me scared. Any advice anyone?

This is literally what my old boss decided to follow. Always negative, came in late, had a lot of excuses, needed a smoke break as soon as she came in, loved to bring her personal problems into the work place and acted upon that to other managers and staff. Was always negative every single day when no one at work treated her badly. She was clearly not in the medical field but in retail. She treated customers like they were idiots. Yet was so shocked how people on lasted two weeks under her management. I pray for others that have to deal with management like this 😔 One thing for someone who isn’t a manager or who lacks power, but if you have it, you are expected some more responsibility,tasks, or maturity.

@PharmacyTechLove

Ok. First, don’t quit. Second, let your pharmacist/coworkers know that you’re not receiving the proper training. Third, in order to not give out the wrong meds, verify: Address, phone number and date of birth of each customer that’s picking up a prescription.

@roseslinolium

Yes! Take your time and check your work! Not to mention the pharmacist will always be checking it through each process. You type up the Rx? It gets sent to pharmacist, they check it over and sent it to production. You fill it, it gets sent back to pharmacist. Nothing gets to the patients without the pharmacist seeing it. You got this!!

We are told "customer's first" but some customers thinks we are beneath them and need a reminder they are not. For instance, this regular customer continously made racist comments toward me and wouldn't stop when asked to. Even the attending pharmacist stepped in. In the end I got fed up and called them out for being a racist, refused to provide service and walked away. Luckily I didn't get fired or reprimanded but in hindsight I should've handled it better.

@@Makebelieveginger I haven't been a pharmacy technician for a while (I went to nursing school and now I'm a nurse). It can be chaotic, I won't lie. There is a lot to learn but just show up ready to absorb as much as you can and try to get hands on experience as soon as possible. Be a good teammate because often teamwork will determine if everyone can get out on time. It can also be very fun! I would rehearse saying common medication names so you don't embarrass yourself in front of the customers like I did. Also, memorize brand names. A lot of customers only recognize medications by their brand names even though the pharmacy gives them generic.

And don’t get so consumed into pronouncing each medication correctly. I have noticed that in the classroom that a lot of students beat themselves up for not being able to pronounce the medications correctly. It will come with time. Also, I’m partnered with DenaliRx.com you can use my discount code: pharmacytechlove to receive 15% off.

#6 what about on the phone by last name? I was told we can't call (on the phone) a patient by their name/last name. How do I tell "Jane Doe" your prescription is ready? (I'm in retail pharmacy) I'm use to calling people by their last name but now it's just confusing.

By last name is absolutely fine, and I can see the confusion because there are a lot of people with the same name, especially if it’s a common name.

I’m a year late but today was my first day as a pharmacy tech and it was easy and really cool but I feel like I could get better but what do you have to say about it because I’m okay with 8 years of school to become a pharmacist because it seems really cool to me and cooking is not for me and that was my last job and I graduated from graduated from culinary as a jr chef and that was not for me but I feel a pharmacy technician is because today as my first day I did 300 prescriptions by myself

Well, if you don’t have time to study, then there’s no point of going to college. You have to designate that time, so you may have to get up your weekends to study. That’s what I did.

It’s good to know math in any field you work in. I don’t think it’s hard at all. Look at a few of my calculation videos, I go through it slowly so that hopefully everyone can understand.

I don’t agree with with that. This career isn’t for ppl who can’t handle college. I don’t like to for ppl to think that about themselves. I went to college and received a degree. The only reason I didn’t go back was because it was extremely hard to work and handle school without family support. You never know a lot of ppl situation, that’s why I’ve learned to stop passing judgement. College was very easy for me🤷🏽‍♀️ Raising a child was the hard part

It's pretty much mostly just calculating day supply by using division. (Example: if a doctor prescribes 90 tablets of a medication and the directions are to take it 3 times daily.. the day supply would be 30 days- 90÷3= 30). You still have to be careful and double check your math as to not make mistakes, but the software we use at my store (IDK if every pharmacy has this perk) usually accurately calculates the day supply automatically after you type the directions unless the directions are a bit more complex. Also, if you are not totally confident, you can use a calculator. Most computers have a calculator right on them. When in doubt just use it. But learning how to calculate things in your head helps you to get things done more efficiently and as quickly as possible

As a pharmacy tech myself I don't think "we are healthcare professionals". We're not licensed, just registered or certified, at least in my state. Personally, I consider techs as healthcare workers, but not "professionals" which is appropriate for an APNs, RPhs, MDs which are licensed professions.
@PharmacyTechLove
@PharmacyTechLove 4 жыл бұрын
I definitely consider myself a healthcare profession. I compound medications, I prepare sterile IV medications for patients and I make sure that they receive the right medications, right dose, strength and so forth. We place ourselves in atmospheres just like everyone else to be exposed.
@dahum__
@dahum__ 3 жыл бұрын
@@PharmacyTechLove Selecting the right medication, strength, and dose is part of the job description of a pharmacy technician. The RPh is the one verifying. As a tech myself, we work WITHIN the pharmacy profession but I wouldn't call myself a "professional" by any means. It's really the pharmacist. Everything rides on his/her license, not our registration.
@dahum__
@dahum__ 3 жыл бұрын
@Alexis Hamilton I don't know about Canadian pharmacy regulations. Honest question, if the tech is the "final check", what is then the purpose of a pharmacist in Canada? If techs are granted the role of final checks I'm assuming you're also allowed to counsel patients? Pharmacists have obtained at least 6 years of schooling, not us techs, at least not here in the states. There's no "degree" for technician work. No tech EVER is allowed to do prescription verification (the last step before it is released to the patient) per federal pharmacy law. The only "verification" we do is making sure the bottle we scan is same drug that's on the label which we call here "NDC verification".

@@PharmacyTechLove See what had happened was lol. Nah but for real. So in 2012 I received my Pharmacy Tech Cert in Job Corp. Let's just say the training and the class did not prepare the 20 year old me too well for the actual workplace (No seriously I had no on field training as my instructor, as lovely as she was, was more of a babysitter than an instructor. I gained just enough knowledge especially the really important like the abbs, the laws, parts of the body and their functions, basic stuff, but that's about it.) But who is totally prepared for the work environment honestly, just sayin I was not and because I experienced a tragedy while at the facility I was already mentally not in my A game to begin with. Needless to say I'm watching your videos because I'm going back to school soon so I can recertify or get a new cert at this point, as well as get tips on how to be a better employee so I can better assist my team. So with that said, here's another bit. I was hired to a retail pharmacy at a grocery as my first job. Yay. Not really. I felt like I was not an asset to my team, especially when I first started out. I'd never used a cash register, I never been in a position for customer service, I was totally lost and I felt like I low key was getting on my coworkers nerves because I asked so many questions or asked clarification on stuff that I should have known or used my own judgement on. I know I was terrible, because I didn't know what I was doing off the bat and I felt bad about that for sure. Some even got rude with me because I was not efficient (I'll admit I wasn't lesson and mistake noted and learned), and me being new to the workforce and a total green horn in a nutshell they had a field day with that fact, even another technician who was my senior. I did my best in not arguing with her so much but she succeeded in making me go there with her a few times though lol because I got tired of her getting raunchy whenever she felt like it even when I wasn't even talking to or asking anything. She was like that with everyone though, even the pharmacists, but they barely said anything to her because she was great in her job. I've even had pharmacists, with major complexes, put me through the wringer especially one I will never forget who put me through it, and when I say put me through it OMG. I tell you I put up with a lot from others and many days I wanted to walk out the job with the bird. But I stuck with it as best as I could for a year until I couldn't make it to the company site for the test that was in a side of town due to weather conditions at the time. And the same pharmacist that put me through it refused to reschedule me and yeah needless to say I lost my position and was demoted to another department of the store with lowered pay as well (I was making $7.25 and I don't remember where they lowered me to but yeah I wasn't making that anymore). I was like I never want to do this line of work again. So over the next 7 years I worked in other customer service jobs, worked in a hospital as a dishroom worker, worked in the warehouse industry, worked in office environments. So I had time to gain experience in other fields of work, what it meant to be a great worker and better coworker especially for workplaces that treated you as an asset than an expendable drone. And during this pandemic and being out of work I really had time to deal with my mental health and ptsd along with personal issues. I still have more to go as I am not perfect but I will get there. And get this, this might make you chuckle, although the manger that was present in my demotion said that I would never work in their company pharmacies again, I ended up gaining employment with the company again as a pharmacy technician again, only this time I'm their central distribution pharmacy warehouse. Never say never apparently. But this time on my return I will be doing things a whole lot different. I'm 29 now kicking 30's door, and trust I'm not going to put up with what I did 9-8 years ago. Also learning how to deal better in conflict with others especially in the workforce. Since I was young and silly I was easily sucked up in gossip and all the other petty crap you find yourself in in a work team not knowing you don't do that. Sure have rapport with your team mates but don't be a schmooze or pleaser for the wrong folks or even the right ones. Of course I'm as prepared as I'm going to be as I may not be popular with this attitude but at some point it's like, I'm here to work and be cool so we can make stuff happen in the right way and I can get paid and go home. I don't want to be on any bad sides but I also don't want to do anything that disrupts the flow on the work day. If the flow gets messed up it's not pretty, seen that too many times lol. But I'm excited to go back into the work force, nervous because of the delta variant and the fact that corona already made it's way into my worksite, yikes. Just pray for me lol I did get vaxxed but still the worry is there. And that's my story. Hope you found it interesting. At some point I'll have to look into teaching as well as you have inspired and rewoke that part of me. I wanted to be a teacher before but I didn't know what I could teach. Also I'm weird and didn't want to chose something most people would go for like English or history or something like that. I thought about Japanese but the demand looks to be met, I'll keep an eye on that too. But Pharmacy Technology has many parts that like find enthusiasm in like anatomy, biology, lol you get the point but yeah, I got a lot of work to do. But I can do it, I can. Thanks and I'll be binge watching your videos, taking notes and look forward more videos in the future. Good night ^v^
