I also remember chasing down wild spawns like Snorlax, Dragonite, Lapras and Chansey. My first ever dragonite came from a wild spawn in the Edmonton Green shopping centre. I legit ran away and left my Mum with two trolleys of fruit to find that Dragonite. But I got it. My Mum didn’t understand at all. Until I then got her into the game. Now she has 300 Pikachu that she won’t transfer. 😂😂😂

I'm so OG I remember the original footsteps hunting method that they almost immediately discarded. I actually really liked the "Hot and Cold" game method of finding nearby pokemon, and I wish it were still the way it worked. You see a shadow popup with absolutely no images, zero hints of precisely where, or even what direction. You picked a direction and walked. If the number of footsteps dropped, you knew you were getting closer and going in the right direction. If the amount increased or the pokemon fell off the map of nearby pokemon entirely, you knew you picked the wrong direction. Idk, it definitely made it feel more like you were actually *hunting* for wild pokemon. It was more rewarding to find them that way.

I actually haven’t tried analyzing one since returning to the game, so having actual stats instead of “I really like his Attack” is a huge plus. Some other things that only OGs know: - You could still get XP from PokeStops even if your bag was full. Unfortunately, that's not the case anymore. - The prestige based Gym system. You could have up to 10 Pokemon in a Gym, and they could all be the same species. As you can bet, lots of downtown areas had Level 10 Gyms with tons of Snorlax, Dragonite, or some other Pokemon. I do enjoy the current Gym system though.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the old gym system, having to battle all the pokemon several times, preferably with a low cp party. It took forever to beat a gym!

I remember those days. Out with friends hunting. A friend saw a wild hitmonchan once and we ran to it

Oh yes, so much fun how things were much more difficult back then... Gyms were so different, and a bit confusing, and I remember how the day/night cycle used to impact spawns, like how pidgey would only spawn during the day and zubat only a night. Unfortunately, I put the game down only a month or two after it released as back then I didn't have a phone plan, so I had to rely on wifi networks, which weren't always readily available to me, and the phone I had back then wasn't officially supported by the app, so I had to download the apk from third party sites when there were updates, which wasn't always easy given my aforementioned wifi reliance. However, I got back into it 2 1/2 years later, levelled up from 19 to 40 within a year (am currently 47 and 4 mil xp off 48), and have been going strong since.

Don't bother too much with leveling back in the day and I don't remember if I stopped playing for awhile when shinies came out, but everything else I remember. A lot of pain back then. Oh and the "near by" pokemon until we finally had stops to track most of these things down. Unless you really had no stops then I think these "near by" ones show up.

Ah yes I’ll never forget. Hydro the Blastoise and I still battle with him to this day. I remember the first shiny too, I found mine at a Chinese restaurant 😂

Also OG, when Pikachu was first released as a shiny, when you saw it, it didn't have the sparkles. You simply had to notice the color. And there was no shiny icon on the catch screen or in your Pokemon storage. That came with a later update.

OGs also remember: - Rustling grass! - All Pokémon being genderless - Training at your own-colored gyms - Being able to catch Pokémon traveling at any speed, because no speedlock - The glitch where Pokémon IVs were linked to their Pokedex number -- lots of 0 ATK Venusaur from those days, great for the meta today - The ace trainer badge that was suspended for several months, leading people to worry that it was missable, like the Seer badge in Ingress - Not being able to stack powerups, having to wait exactly for when they expire to use another - Those magical few months where it was a global phenomenon that united the world

I remember. every single one of those! The most OG thing I remember is the shield button in the item shop. If you put Pokemon in a gym you would collect poke coins and stardust for as long as the Pokemon is alive. I remember the max limit was ten and that would give you 10,000 stardust and 1,000 pokecoins per day your Pokemon was in the gym.

I thought the mass transfer came a lot later, not in 2016. That, along with the power ups, really helped speeding up the game (though there's still more that could help, like the sending/opening gifts, evolutions and trades).

Im a day one player (for Canadian release) and remember all of these. The popularity of this game during that summer was insane. I played heavily until the initial release of the Legendary Birds then more or less quit shortly after and have recently gotten back into the game. I was curious and checked, my oldest pokemon I kept is a Snorlax Caught July 20th, 2016

2:11 I chose Charmander and he started as 10 CP. No believed he will be any good because of his CP. He’s the heaviest, and the tallest in my Charmander I got. But to this day, he’s a Charizard with 2826 CP, with Mega Charizard X CP level at 3789, and Mega Charizard Y CP level at 4395. If I could enter the world champions, with any Pokémon, it will be my Charizard. 🔥🔥🔥

I quit pokemon go 2 weeks into the game coming out in 2016, ended on level 17. Picked up the game again in 2018(didn't know Pikachu could be shiny during that CD) so I started playing pretty consistently since February CD in 2018. Now I'm level 50 with nearing 4000 shinies ever caught. I'm glad I started playing agin.

I've played Pokemon Go since September 2019. By then they were already up to Unova pokemon in the game. I'd heard about it from the start, but A, I didn't have a smartphone until 2019, and B, I was reluctant at first to try it. I tried it while I was bored at a reception, and now I play it far, FAR more than any of the other games. I'm especially hooked on trying to catch shinies, and I love the new huge/tiny feature. I definitely missed some things about the early days of the game, like actually having to physically walk to catch a pokemon, having no shinies, and having no gender differences. I only had a small window before the Covid-releated changes came to the game, like remote raids, not having to walk during (non-daily) incense to spawn pokemon, and not having to get very close to the Pokestop came into play, so I don't remember those days very well.
