Sir... I have a great respect for your experience.........however, I have only had to use my carry handgun twice in my 74 years. Once in a mall parking lot, and once when a punk tried to jack me while I was changing a flat tire in a shit part of town. In my opinion.....NOTHING is more valuable than CONSTANT training and familiarization. Both times I was first-to-fire and made dual hits both times. Both times were at LESS than 10 feet......and NEITHER was an "aimed" shot. I never shot less than 2 rounds in either event. I have always practiced in realistic (possible") scenarios, thus the goofy firing positions. My "carry-gun" is a very concealable , high-quality .32acp. Under NO circumstances do I consider it "underpowered".......except for cases over 10 yards....and yes.....Id rather have my Colt gold cup...........however , its not something that most people could conceal and deploy very quickly (I know I cannot) under those conditions. Viet-Nam was a real ugly training-ground for me ......but it did teach us that the first guy to register a hit(anywhere) usually came out on top......so my mantra has ALWAYS been familiarity, training, and speed of deployment. Second in a gunfight really sucks. Thanks for your views!!! bob

That list was excellent. These are other things I always did: 1) Do a slow, onehanded draw after getting home for the night. Especially I did it if wearing a pullover sweater or the like. I unloaded and put the rounds in a speedloader, and did a reload and onehanded holstering in the morning. That created correct muscle memory for a blitz draw when the moment came. 2) I stayed in Condition Yellow whenever armed, and whenever out. That carried three parts. A. Always be looking around for sources of potential threats. B. Run a quick thought of potential responses to threats, continuously. [That included noting where other persons might prohibit firing, by being beyond the threat, or by darting across my line of fire.] C. Always be mindful of cover or escape routes. This included directions to hit and roll, if cover be unavailable. For those who wondered, my "always" pistol was a J-frame .357, with Uncle Mike's grips, 2 speedloaders, 2 dump pouches, and a will to live. I defied convention by using 110 grain sjhp. I practiced ambidextrous, single handed firing and loading. I preferred to know I could handle worst case before it came on me. I suppose that ambidextrous practice counts as (3).

Shooting a firearm you are not trained and proficient with just because their ego or gun guru says they need a 45 is a lawsuit and maybe criminal as every missed round has an attorney attached to it. You also didn't mention quality equipment as holster and mag pouch.

Quite a few fuckups demonstrated here, however each of them has a different weight. The biggest fail was not evading and not seeking cover immediately while drawing the pistol. First things first. All the others are secondary and would have had less impact if the first thing was done properly.

Israeli Carry can be useful as long as one trains with it in this capacity. It's not for me, personally, but I know a few that do-and they're damned fast on draw and racking. That said, if you're simply carrying without one in the chamber for 'safety' or to prevent an accidental discharge, then you need more training to build up confidence.

Very good video! That was the first thing I noticed in your scenario video. How the defender drew his gun then did a tap/rack because he was carrying unchambered. I just did a video on my channel about this subject. Hey, I understand how people may have concerns about carrying chambered. When I first started to carry every day as a beginner, I was one of those. But then I realized those concerns just meant I needed more information and knowledge of what makes my gun fire. How it works and how it’s not “just going to go off” on it’s own. If you are nervous about carrying chambered, you also need more training and practice safely working from the holster to gain the competence and confidence to carry chambered.

The sad part is that in spite of your "list", there are states where it is illegal to carry with a round in the chamber. There are other states where it is illegal to have anything EXCEPT FMJ's in your carry weapon (Im looking at you New York).

I was a "professional gun carrier" myself, been in combat and always walked away victorious and un-injured. Every situation has its own merits: (For example, if you are carrying around children, NEVER have one in the chamber, and always have a firearm with a manual safety - children have tiny little hands that get into everything, especially when you're distracted with something else.) If you know that some one has been shooting people out there, don't go out there, unless it's your job to do so. In this scenario, his first mistake was to go out there by himself. Second mistake was to not pay attention to his surroundings while he's prancing around sniffing flowers, third mistake was not to seek cover immediately, to get out of the kill zone. After that the mistakes pile-up and it all just goes down-hill for the victim. And by-the-way, I have seen "professional gun carriers" make all these mistakes too.

The defender did not have situational awareness. 30 feet/360 is the rule. He did not seek cover immediately after the first shot, even if that meant hitting the deck. He did not recognize slide lock and change mags. If he had no extra mags, he did not close the slide. An open chamber only lets the attacker know he is out of ammo.He is also woefully out of shape and had ‘victim’ written all over him.

I have always said (which I have never heard anybody else talk about) is proper hand and finger strength training. A properly exercised wrist, hand, palm, fingers, bones, ... (much like a martial arts student) .. has a healthy, fit, and equalized strength across their wrist, hand, fingers, and palm. This is not some "muscle-bound meat head with a meat hand - or a boxer's dinner plate had" that can barely hold a pistol in their hand and manipulate their fat fingers, ... or the weak and skinny skeleton fingers and hand. Just like rifle training and getting a shoulder tear of bruised muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilege, ... any pistol practice of weapons also develops shock damage to the bones, joints, cartilege, tendons, ligaments. Proper pre-exercise of the hand and fingers before pistol practice, and post-treatment of pistol practice in healing and recovering all of the hand anatomy, leads to proper hand-and-pistol operating procedures. The hand is a very complex construction - - The human hand has over 100 tendons, which are bands of connective tissue that attach muscles to bones and allow muscles to move bones. The hand has two main groups of tendons. Extensor tendons run from the forearm, across the back of the hand, and to the fingers and thumb. These tendons allow you to straighten your fingers and thumb. Flexor tendons run from the forearm, through the wrist, and across the palm of the hand. These tendons allow you to bend your fingers and grip objects in the palm of your hand. The hand also has about six tendons in the wrist that help you control your wrist, hand, and fingers. - The hand has over 100 ligaments, which are strong bands of tissue that connect bones together and provide structure and support. - Collateral ligaments run on the outside edges of your fingers and thumb. They protect your joints from moving too much from side to side. The volar plate ligaments connect your first two finger bones (phalanges) together on each finger. - Cartilage is present in the joints of your hands. Cartilage is a smooth surface that covers the bones in your joints, allowing them to glide against each other without friction. When cartilage is healthy, it also acts as a cushion to absorb and distribute forces across the joint. Cartilage can be found in several parts of the hand. Thumb joints are the two joints in each thumb have cartilage on the surfaces of the bones where they meet. Lunate bone in the middle of the wrist is almost entirely covered in cartilage, which allows for a large range of motion. Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a small piece of cartilage is located on the inside of the wrist, on the little finger side. It can be torn by falling on an outstretched hand, or by a sudden twist of the arm that over-rotates the wrist. Cartilage can also wear down over time, a condition known as osteoarthritis (OA). When this happens, the cushioning effect of the cartilage is reduced and the bones can rub together, causing pain and other symptoms. - The human hand has 27 joints (with cartilage) - The human hand has 27 bones. Carpal bones are eight bones in the wrist, or carpus, that are arranged in two rows of four. The carpal bones include the scaphoid, lunate, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate, triquetrum, and pisiform. Metacarpal bones are five bones in the palm that give the hand its shape. You can see them when you clench your fist. Phalanges are fourteen bones in the fingers and thumb. The phalanges are the individual bones that make up the segments of the fingers and thumb. The bones in the hand are connected by joints and ligaments. - The hand has 34 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons. - The hand has six arteries that supply blood from the heart. Radial artery runs along the radius, close to the thumb. Ulnar artery runs along the ulna, close to the pinkie finger. Deep palmar arch is a small arch that supplies blood to the thumb and index finger. Superficial palmar arch supplies blood to the fingers, and communicates with the deep palmar arch. Common digital arteries branch off the superficial palmar arch supplying blood to the fingers. Princeps pollicis artery branches off the deep palmar arch supplying blood to the thumb. The radial and ulnar arteries divide into branches that form the arches, and the vessels branch off from the arches to supply blood to the fingers. The superficial palmar arch mainly supplies blood to the ulnar side of the hand, while the deep palmar arch supplies blood to the radial side. The arches also provide collateral blood supply to each other. The hand also has superficial and deep veins that drain deoxygenated blood back to the heart. - The hand is supplied by three main nerves: the radial nerve, the median nerve, and the ulnar nerve. Each nerve has both sensory and motor components, and they all originate in the shoulder and travel down the arm to the hand. These nerves give movement and feeling to different areas of the hand. If you have hand problems : muscle weakness, bone damage (osteoporosis, osteoarthritis), nerve damage (tingling and numbness), blood vessel damage (tingling and numbness), cartilege joint bone-on-bone issues, ligament and/or tendon sprains, ... you have hand issues with your weapon. If you have muscle inequality of strength, your fingers could be stronger than your thumb or palm and vice versa. Having carpal tunnel wrist and forearm problems also affects your grip and alignment for proper shooting. All of these complexities cause one to shoot (or turn, like bowling balls) turn over to the left or right, clenched hand pulls to the left or right, fingers pull the sights up or down or skewed in any direction. Pistol training is like weight training for the entire body. Hand exercises are extremely inmportant for daily and continued flexibility of ligaments, tendons, pistol firing recoil and shock, .... As given a long time ago comment to Ethical, do the pinch test and finger prodding of your muscles and fingers holding your weapon. Hold the weapon, then go along all of the fingers and thumb and pinch and prod the muscles noting which are tight (or overly strong), and which are loose (or overly weak). Proper whole hand and finger muscles should be equally strong. Test the wrist for weakness, for backward extension or forward curl downward, and ability to hold weapon firm and sighted and not drop or skew the weapon in any other direction. As the pistol is pointed, so goes the round ... Proper exercise of the forearm, wrist, hand, and fingers, moving them in all directions, for increased mobility, blood flow, nerve reactions, muscle exercise, stretching and contracting ligaments, tendons, and muscles, keeps the hand firm, strong, healthy, fit, flexible, and dexterious. There are martial arts hand-and-finger little grabby spring units that exercise and challenge each finger and muscle. Other hand grabby sqeezy balls, provide hand exercise. Chinese ball twirling in the hands clockwise and counterclockwise greatly facillitate extensive hand and finger exercise. Properly strengthened hands can undergo pistol recoil and shock abuse, including the ligament between the thumb and forefinger that always takes maximum abuse and tearing with pistol recoil. If you have unequally strengthened hand and finger muscles, nerve damage, blood vessel circulation problems, forearm and wrist carpal tunnel syndrome, joint and cartilege problems, bone issues, ligament and tendon issues, ... you will have pistol shooting problems ... even delayed response time of the hands-to-brain and brain-to-hands communications and response time actions, delaying critical time to unload a magazine clip, load a clip, rack the weapon, pull out and align the pistol, firing response time, .. painful hands not properly responding to needed critical hand and finger movements. Keep your hand and fingers properly exercised, strengthened, and fit.
