10 Things Surfers Hate

In this episode I cover 10 things that drive surfers crazy.
Surfing is insanely fun but there are a few things about it that will make you question your sanity.

I'd add - seeing trash in the line-up. I had become so used to it that one time I thought I was kicking a big plastic bag... turned out to be a huge jellyfish!

Don't forget how it feels when your on a shortboard and there's that one longboarder that is hogging every single wave. Of course, some spot is a decided "longboard spot", then the shortboarder is largely to blame. But otherwise, just pay attention to how many waves your catching compared to the people around you.

This pisses me off so much, i surf my local reef and then what happens?! Some snake on a longboard decides to catch it from like 100000miles back and then act as if they arent on the wave, paddle once, the. They are on and they drop straight in on you and you are to blame for them being fucking retards that dont pop up, paddle, turn or shit.

Every single one is so relatable 😂 Personally the most frustrating one is when the wave lies. You've been waiting forever, antsy for a ride when you spot it from way out, watch it build and it either stops building right at the critical moment or is an empty wave with the right shape but no power. Now you're 5 strokes inside with a huge cleanup set on the way 💀 Pisses me off to no end. Need to work on my ability to read waves, feel like my wave-riding ability has improved massively over the years, but my ability to read the ocean has always lagged behind.

I had that happen once at San O and every turn I made to avoid the guy he turned that way too. It ended with my fin embedded about 1-2 inches into the nose of his board.

@@PariahSojourner At a busy Popoyo I had said dreamy wave that had one section to make in front of me before perfection. Dude paddling out turns to avoid the collapsing section and paddles straight at me in the pocket and he kept angling deeper to avoid the white water and no matter where I went, he was putting himself right in my way. I honestly tried to miss the guy, I don't want to ding my board or hurt anyone but I ran clean over that dude. Shocked he wasn't hurt. "Hey Bro, how about next time we duck dive? Mmmmm k?"

I remember a day back in January 2019 or 20 when the wind went offshore in the afternoon and i just had to watch 10-15ft porto barrels while sitting in class all day.

When there are swimmers in the surf, skateboarders snaking your wave, someone infront of you on a really good wave causing you to miss it, fin pops out cause you entered the water too shallow, fellow surfers pissed at the fact that you were doing something to keep you safe.

Okay, here's one: There's a wave forming in front of you, and you're in the right spot to catch it. Then some barney starts paddling for it, so you give him the wave, and then at the top of the curl he backs off, and the wave goes unridden. If a guy does that to me once, I ignore him for the rest of the session, and just drop in on him whenever I feel like it.

The most painful thing is, when there is one day in a year, when the waves are good, you hanging around in school lesson, watching a live cam and when you finally arrive at the beach after school, it's F***** flat 😑

One thing that annoys me is seeing great looking surfboards hanged up on people’s wall’s when I or someone else could be ripping with that, like I only have 1 board so having one of those decoration boards would make a big difference

I have to second what Mack Nevins said, but take it a little further. We planned a trip to deep Mexico (secret spot), 10 friends and my son, although I had a chronic hip problem that wouldn't get better. Turned out I had an infection from previous surgery (thought I was just needing time and healing). Back on the surgery table for me. So I became the photographer for the event (8000) photos later, we're still looking at those photos, so it was a great memory for me and my son. Deep down I'm so angry that I missed those perfect waves.

1. Dudes who have no sense of when to not go for a wave. (People paddling back out in front of them, other people trying to surf etc.) 2. Kooks who follow you around to hang out literally right next to you and go for every wave you go for (I know they are still learning and that’s totally fine but it’s a bad habit to build)

Most of this list, simply that's part of surfing: work, school, inconsistent swell forecasts, wave quality etc.. With exception of conditions changing the moment you paddle out, it's the human element that proves the greatest disappointment. Besides aforementioned crowds and drop-ins, the back paddler and/or those inexperienced that paddle in your way, instead of taking it on the head, that frustrate the most.

In the new era, watching guy after guy pull up to the spot and immediately get on the phone to broadcast conditions (younger guys won't get that one.) And the most dangerous one; NO BOARD MANAGEMENT! People bailing their boards or flopping off relying on their dope ropes. No one kicks out anymore. Also, back paddling or paddling out right in the line of travel.

You should also add the guy that paddle in front of the wave when you take off, forcing you to give up on that wave... usely because the dude doesnt want to duck dive where the wave crashed already... then you trow your board but the lip pull you back into the wave, you get smashed by your own board and end your sesion because you have broken rib...

Don't forget surfers that dont know how to hold there boards and ditch them. If you cant hold on to it through the white water or duck dive please exit the water so you dont hurt someone who's life revolves around the ocean.

Forgot about when tourist want to come sit right behind the surf lineup and ruin every wave that you could of caught by being in the way. They got the whole beach to play in the water but nooo the gotta be right behind the surfers so they think they are cool or that the surfers will save them from getting sucked out.

the biggest frustration for me in surfing is when a surfer crumbles an otherwise makable section on you.... it's so so annoying.

I don't surf but also practice bodyboard and some thing close that you said about the next waves beautifullest than the on you have surfed, is when you paddle to go to the line up and big waves brakes on your face and you paddle a lot, and making a lot of duck daves and see beautiful waves with no one on, and at the time you arrived at the line up : nothing happened so you wait and wait and nothing for a long time. Other is when you are at the lineup and you see some waves at your right so you paddle and paddle and at the time you arrived at the peak that you see previously the beautiful waves are at the exact place you where before to move. And to finish to mix two point of the video but it's only for people who live and work not too far to the ocean is when you know that there is good waves today and you're at work so you wait the entire day and at the time you arrived at the beach at the end of the day the waves are terrible

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😑😭 It 2 to 4 or 5 to 10 ft and glassy early morning . You and your buddies are the first one on the beach. Then you suit up walk down to shore line . When you start to walking in the water to the white wash, all sudden you get stung by sting ray. After about minute or minutes the sting start up . With pain , crawls up the foot in to leg and then off on cramping and off on sting pain . You can barley stand . The 4 to 6 different types action of pains increase. This lags in so many ways Next day you come back to beach to surf . It walled or small and the wind start to pick up. You miss 1 of the best days of year .

I have a problem with those paddle board surfers. most of them can’t control their big ass board and send it flying towards me on my little short board trying to take my head off. they get in the way of all the good sets and make it harder to paddle out because you always have to watch out for them. if u can handle the board it’s fine all is well but most of them can’t so it’s annoying as shit
