Is that Blacks? You learn after a big mistake... or two... that on a big day, don't take the first wave or even the second wave of a set... if you blow it.... hold your breath and try to relax.

I think the guy at 3:08 totally snaked the guy further back. You can see he made the wave break sooner than it naturally would have. Man, I've been out in waves smaller than this but still relatively huge...for me anyway. I got a beatin' that I'll never forget. And that was over 50 years ago in Huntington Beach.

I've never surfed a wave bigger than 5 foot, but I kind of want to experience getting tossed by a wave like that... Even If I'm on my board for 2 seconds 😅

Rip currents, just wax your board properly, use a lightweight longboard and paddle back on a slight angle facing the shore, it'll be slow but you'll inch your way back to shore no problem

Took a wipeout in HI and the leash hogtied me by wrapping around both my ankles. I couldn't kick out of it as the wave was pulling the board and dragging me behind it.

I will never forget May 15, 2021 when my buddy and I paddled out in front the power plant at HB State Beach. First real south swell to hit. It was very low tide, walled and dumpy. First wave I caught instantly turned into a big freefall airdrop. Me (my medial tibia), board which was imbedded in the lip of the wave all hit in the same moment an almost completely dry sandbar in a violent explosion. A split second later I bounced way up above the water to land in calf deep water with a burning stinging excruciating pain. I checked the board and all I found was a crack in the rail just behind the nose so I paddled back out. After successfully catching and riding a couple waves the pain kept getting worse so I lifted my leg up to see the swelling growing quickly. I got to the shore and could walk. Ranger happened by quickly thank God and drove me to my truck. HUGE contusion and I was on crutches the next 3 months and at that time didn’t even know if I would ever walk normally again. Thankfully I’ve mostly recovered now. I keep surfing but to this day I’m often times having trouble committing to dropping in when it gets a bit critical. It’s stuck in my head...

Getting your leash stuck on a reef and drowning. Trick is to pull your leg up and remove it. Also people that do not use a leash in crowded lineups are pretty deadly. White board in whitewater landed straight in my mouth in Malibu pier while I was taking a breath 💀

Any sport where part of the deal is overcoming fear, is going to have some small element of built in risk. the potential for growth through fun is worth it. This video made me feel very safe because I only body surf on a sand bottom, and select only old man waves, because that's what I am . I often use a bicycle to find a good spot, whereas with a car, you pretty much go out wherever you find parking and take what you can get. mobility is my first safety tip. This next part is going to sound all woo woo , but I go with whatever works, as people in real danger always do. Throughout most of mankind, people close to the land considered everything in nature a living thing to be respected and understood as vital to one's life. Besides just checking the conditions before I go in, I do a little mental exercise of gratitude . That is just traditional and natural. But with some people , they can expand that natural condition , into a higher state, something supernatural , although I admit that sounds pretty hard to grasp. It is commonly called, "in the zone" where everything is as if custom made for your happiness . Instead of this happening as a freak occurrence , take the experience further , and if you are able , the ocean might grant you friendship and recognition , as impossible as that seems, unless you view that goal through the lens of a primitive. with a friend on your side, you still get all the same old sly tricks, but you are in a much better condition to have fun., since the playing field is now actively helping. Don't get me wrong, I am for science all the way, and just because it can't explain the hyper natural today doesn't mean it won't in the future. If it is just a perception of the mind , or an observable reality is tough , because all one has to go by is the mind's perception of reality. I had my understanding bolstered one day after I was in great harmony with nature and was just stepping out of the water, laughing at the last little wave playing around my ankles saying good by, when a Belgian man stepped up and asked me how I seemed to know exactly what the wave was going to do. I was a little bit zonked from the activity , so just said something like, " I do it a lot". when a more friendly explanation would be it was a realization of modifying my behavior to more closely align with the energy of nature. An energy that travels from the sun, to move the water, that should be completely indifferent to me. I can't figure it so well, it's as though my reality exceeds my understanding in this area.

you are a smart dude. sometimes the most obvious thing is "hidden" in plain sight. Science tells us that a sunburn is associated with arthritis in later life, so who knows what repeated over exposure can do, long term for you health outlook ,, besides of course, skin cancer. on a smaller scale one can certainly feel pretty stupid when , as an adult, you get a painful sunburn , when one time should have been enough to teach you the lesson .
