Angpows can be very useful. For example you have neighbour who helped you out, but refuses to take payment. You can "give his kid his son/kids an angpow", that diffuses any embarrassment for him.

Just to tell of my experience when I was in Tokyo almost 10 years ago or more. Everywhere I went, I met very kind and helpful and polite Japanese people may they be young, old or middle age. I was in a restaurant and nobody knew I was a foreigner until I spoke to order in English and when paying the bill, the young male waiter told me to take care of myself and have a nice trip. Then another day I was lost and asked for directions. The old lady couldn’t understand but she told me to wait and asked a person who could speak English to help me. And it was snowing at that time, I was having trouble walking on ‘snow’ roads and nobody pressed their horns at me even when the traffic light turned red. They patiently waited for me to cross. And while queuing to buy a train ticket, I took a long time, nobody told me to hurry. And while waiting for a friend outside a shop, an old man saw I was cold and told me to wait inside the shop. (I could understand a little bit of simple Japanese). And so many other little things that made my trip very wonderful 😊

the act of giving Ang Pao..is actually for luck.. in the past, "red packet" can just be a 20cent coin wrapped in a red paper. it's just that these days ppl make it fancy with proper red packets and more money. it is traditionally that the "mystical beast" 年獸,is chased away on new year by Loud Noise (fire cracker and banging on gongs and such) and also bright colors . like Red, so ppl wear red and give red packet as a blessing or luck with a small token of money. however traditionally you dun give out red packet until you get married and have a family.
