You're right. One of the main things that you need is patience. I've been grooming since 2003, I'll be 57 years old this summer. I've had my own business since 2011. It's a lot of work, but I love when the owner comes to pick them up. They are like, "Oh! They are so beautiful." It makes you feel great. 🐕🐾

I am almost your age and want to learn to groom. I've been wanting to learn for years but couldn't find out where to get started until now. Do you think it's too late for me? I've been teaching myself to groom my two schnauzers.

@@renaej3796 it’s never too late to start something you enjoy. I’m 40 and I just got hired to start my journey with dog grooming. Was In The casino business the last 20+ years and I was just done with it. My older sister was a stay at home mom once she had kids but a couple years ago decided she wanted to do hair so she went to school and is now a hair stylist. Never too late

Although I am kicking myself a little bit for not showing up to the bathing job I got hired for when I was 20. Could have prob had my own business by now. But life is life so it’s whatever.

As a groomer. I agree with all of this. The biggest one for me is patience. I've seen groomers lose theirs and become rough in their handling. So having lots of patience is a must.

Wow-this is direct, honest advice. You helped me realize that I don’t have a lot of experience handling other people’s dogs, and I’d need to jump in to that before committing to this career. I am totally subscribing!

All your points are correct. I recently got my certificate in pet grooming. I’m an older person and do it from home for supplemental income. In a salon I bathe dogs and do some grooming for practice. For me it’s exactly we’re I want to be with grooming. A couple other points is in the beginning, whatever money you make usually goes back into the industry for buying the tools you need/want and to never stop learning. I’ll never be a power groomer but that was never my intention. I like the one on one with a pet, using high quality products and tools, and the transformation to a happy pet.

I love this video! I see so many groomers glorify it, only showing the good dogs. I’m a bather eventually a groomer but this job has taught me dogs are still animals before they’re our pets! That being said I still love them I love them even more now just differently.

I worked retail for most of my life of 25yrs. And I don’t like it, it’s empty it lacks true passion and low pay. I love animals and I love cleaning and transforming things to be beautiful even if I have to cut through the gross grime there is. So I thought pet grooming! Something that’s a challenge for my ADHD to conquer and I could become certified expert on animals to go into different fields for it. I can create it as a living, a career that I’ll love. I’ve also heard horror stories of what pet groomers go through, it’s a bit nerve wrecking. But I know I don’t like to see pets unhappy. And I’m patient and calm in most situations. As I have been with my own cats and dogs. I’ve no idea if I’m going to be good at pet grooming. What is life without passion? I hope I can make it work if I continue to pursue this. I’ve no idea what career I’d go for if not for that. All I got is retail experience.

This is a very thorough and well-thought-out video. I've trained a number of new stylists over the years and try to be as honest as possible about how grooming really is before they get into it. However, it's sometimes difficult to cover all of the topics that could be a deal breaker for them because we get so used to these challenges ourselves that we forget how it will affect someone new to the career. This is a great resource I'll point people to in the future. Thank you for taking the time to compile this list and share it in such an engaging format!!

Ive worked at a doggy boarding facility for 5 years, just started learning to groom on and off in January (could on work with groomer few days a week due to baby sitting issues) but #9 I'm soooo glad I'm not alone on that. I thought I was SO slow and my "teacher" would be sassy about it sometimes 😭

I hate when other groomers/bathers brag about time I’d rather brag about how well I did. One bather I work with was talking about she’s the fastest at bathing while I was drying the dogs she bathed I was like like girl my dogs are wayy cleaner this one face is oily and I can’t dry it....

I’m working at PetSmart rn, hoping to transfer into the salon as a beginner (bather). But I have social anxiety. It’s why I picked retail to challenge myself, but my boss has also noticed my attendance and performance aren’t that great because of it. I love working creatively with my hands, but maybe I won’t be good enough with owners. I feel like it would be a good challenge. I understand why my boss is hesitant to transfer me into the salon tho…

i currently get paid $10/hr to work at a daycare/kennel and let me tell you while it might be the greatest job, getting paid $10/hr is an absolute crime especially when your company is branded as a 'luxury' pet resort (pet paradise....) but it made me realize that grooming is a viable career choice, was grooming school worth it? or should I just look for an apprenticeship/start at an entry level petsmart groomer? edit: just watched your other videos! very informative thank you so much!

My first year working at a dog groomers. I had this terrier I was working on. I went to clip his nails. He jumped right out of my arms and onto the floor. I felt like it happened in slow motion cause I was in shock. I still am kind of traumatized from it. It was a high table I had him on. He was okay. I've learned to keep a handle on sneaky runaways like him.

When I first started as a bather I was loving on this black dog a bunch, nuzzling him, kissing his little head, then when I got him wet it looked like his fur was moving, like, wiggling... it was. There were thousands of fleas running all over his face and into his eyes, nose, and mouth. It felt like a horror movie

I know I'm a late commenting but I've been thinking about getting into pet grooming. I use to rehabilitate 'problem' horses, groom horses, and retrain abused/neglected dogs, and was a vet assistant. I'd say I'm patient because I could work with horses who tried to kill me without losing my temper or fear. I do worry about the physical demand as I am disabled, however I think I would be okay as long as I had a lift table and a ramp up to the bath. I love animals, but the big thing is I am calm under pressure and focused and detail oriented. I am really hoping I can do this.

I want to do pet grooming but I don’t have a dog plus I’m allergic 😢. But I am watching tons of videos and still want to become one. What tips or advice would you give me? Plus I’m a small girl 5’0 and skinny. I feel like I probably won’t get hired Bc of my height and weight.
@PawsRelax
@PawsRelax 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and your question! Surprisingly I’ve heard of lots of groomers who are allergic and also who don’t have pups of their own! They find working as a groomer as a way to get their “dog fix” if that makes sense! I wouldn’t worry about your height/weight at all! I am only 5’3 and fairly small. Your body adjusts to being able to lift heavy dogs- some groomers only do dogs under a certain weight or if you work in a salon you could have a coworker help you lift a dog etc!
