1. Avoid anything with ‘experience’ in the title, you will be paying through the nose. 2. There’s nothing wrong with not staying somewhere central. The centre of London is very easily accessible within 20mins by public transport. You can find some lovely air b&b’s off local high streets near a station, in zones 3-4. 3. Be open about where you eat. I don’t mean choose crappy places, but if you think you’re going to get a decent Sunday lunch at a pub in the middle of a touristy area, you are going to be majorly disappointed with the food and the cost.

Leaving tomorrow for my 12th trip to London. First thing visitors need to know is how to pronounce the name of the river. It's "Tehms" not "Tames"! So much free stuff to do in London from Roman ruins under the City of London to The Sky Garden to the graffiti gallery known as Leake Avenue Vaults. Lesser known churches such as Southwick (Suthuk) Cathedral and All Hallows at the Tower are by donation. Not free, but if you are a theatre kid like you can stuff yourself on everything from "The Mousetrap" (been running 70 years) to musicals to Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Globe has shows running year round. Uber boars are mire expensive than the Tube but less expensive than those awful sightseeing boats. Don't over plan your visit to London. Let yourself get lost in one of the oldest and most resilient cities on the planet. Brick Lane for Bangladeshi food. Watch for bomb damage from WWI and II. You don't have to do the "tourist" things to see London.

Since the Liz opened a couple of years ago, you now have the option of being able to stay away from the centre of town whilst only being a few minutes away from most of the tourist hotspots. In 2016 a friend and I went to London for our 40th birthdays, to see the Star Wars Celebration. We had one day for touristing so we booked a champagne ride on the London Eye. I was really prepared for the "trap" feeling of it, but we were so pleasantly surprised. First off we got to sit at a bar for a couple of "free" (prepaid) drinks and then our guide took us past the long lines to our own (well there were like six others apart from us) gondola. Then she pulled out a cabin type bag with something like six bottles of (not expensive but still) champagne and told us these need to be empty when we're done. 😂 So we emptied them. All in all we had a blast and hadn't paid through our noses for the experience. So sometimes traps can be fun. I'm a frequent London visitor and it was the first time I'd tried something like that, luckily it was a good experience. 😊

We were there in 2022, and did not think it was any more expensive than Italy. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in the heart of town and we were very pleased with our accommodations. I guess it depends on what you deem “expensive”. There is so much to do that cost nothing or almost nothing. Next year we are planning on taking 3 weeks, renting a car and driving the English countryside. One of my favorite places we experienced was seeing “Phantom of the Opera” Another great time was spending a couple hours at a local pub, with locals. We found the most amazing pizza place just 2 doors down from our hotel. Will admit that the fish & chips at Harrods were a bit pricey, but worth the experience. We walked a lot, weather was good, even in November. We did take Uber a few times and did learn was not to schedule too many sites on the same day. Basically, just planning ahead, which my husband is great at, made our experience so worth it.

Last trip we stayed at an Abnb across the street from Kings Cross. It was a good location for us for the travel from Heathrow, lots of Tube line options to get around town and then we walked across the street 20 mins before our train to Newcastle departed. The only downside was 3 rooms shared 1 bathroom. BUT, 1 room was empty and the other room had 2 young girls more interested in the nightlife and were on a different daily schedule and slept in late, so we never had to deal with them occupying when we needed in there. This might not be for everyone, but we only used our room to sleep and keep our stuff while we were out and about.

We were fortunate as we just took our family to the UK for Christmas and New Year - our kids’ second trip to London and York. I agree with the whole list! The hotels are tricky in London, especially if you have more than 4 people (and short term rentals can be just as pricey). We were in a comically small room but it was clean and safe and centrally located which allowed us to walk or take a quick tube ride someplace. We loved the free museums, easy public transportation, cozy pubs, and lovely people. And huge Cadbury selection at supermarkets. The “hate” for us was also inconsiderate tourists, but fortunately it was few and far between. It was really busy over New Year, which wasn’t a favorite of one of my kids who isn’t a big city person, but we can deal with a few days of crowds. The biggest thing is planning. And sometimes you spend money for an incredible experience- like the Tower of London. It’s amazing and such a must do and you won’t regret it.

@AndyKing1963Сағат бұрын
sometimes they leave the gates open, and people think they can get away without tapping out - if you do end up paying the maximum fare
@drzander337833 минут бұрын
You can accidentally exit thinking you’ve tapped out but the machine hasn’t read your card/phone properly. That’s especially likely with the extra wide exits designed for those with luggage, prams etc. The barrier closes very slowly on those. Another way it can happen is if you tap in and out with different cards. In theory, the exit barrier shouldn’t let you out, but in practice the barrier may still be open from the person before, so you imagine you’ve tapped out, but you haven’t. You then get charged the maximum possible fare for someone exiting at that station.

There are lots of ways of paying far too money for things in London - there are lots of places (especially restaurants) aimed at wealthy tourists which are very expensive and not great quality. But there are lots of cheaper places as well, especially if you hunt around and maybe slightly off the main tourist drags. Also, the public transport isn't that bad IMHO - don't forget that the amount you spend on an Oyster or Contactless card in a day is capped (depending on how many zones you travel through - I think the within zone 1 cap is £8.50), so after you've done a few journeys any extra ones are free. Hey Dan. You should visit London here in Canada. We have the beautiful Thames River running through the city. Nearby is the town of Stratford, where there are several theaters that put on plays written by a local play write named William Shakespeare. I bet the London in the UK doesn’t have any of that.

There are plenty of reasonably priced good hotels-you need to do your research first! I've been to New York, and that is expensive! At least in Europe, the price you see is what you will pay; you don't have to cope with the price plus this tax and that tax plus a tip for a surly waiter! And our weather comes across the Atlantic - so, I guess we can blame America for it!
@michaelscott71663 сағат бұрын
Exactly, if you stay near the main areas in any major city you're going to get hammered for accommodation. Just find a hotel 5-10 miles away next to a tube or train station and you'll pay at least half price or get way more for your budget.

I lived in the UK for several years, and left it after the Brexit for one simple reason, the atmosphere is not friendly, There is racism and hypocrisy. Everything around seem fake, a sun rays with no heat, flowers with no smell, beautiful females but with no femininity. I moved to south Europe and had to learn the dificult language and start from zero, but I enjoyed it, I regret my time of living in the UK, but what can I say, all are lessons in life. From my point of view, the only reason preventing people from leaving the UK is the language barrier, if one got to know a european language he/she would have left the country long time ago. But no one like to start from zero and go through tough times like I did.

@mesopotamialover905 Brexit did bring out the worst in the UK, from xenophobic politicians to knuckle dragging racist thugs who abused anyone with a brown skin. But generally the UK is a great country, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your time here. But flowers with no smell? Britain is famous for its lovely gardens, you must have been trying to smell tulips which have no smell. It can get very hot here in the summer, temperatures of over 30c degrees last summer. You clearly mixed with the wrong set of people if you think people are fake.
