i'm a twin myself, and i am very grateful for my mom explicitly choosing names that are VERY different. when you're a twin (especially identical like us) people usually view you as a set and your individuality just doesn't exist. it was so weird, but people usually assumed what the other child's name was based upon the one they learned first, which always felt presumptuous and awkward. when they found out our names were very different, it really felt like they saw us as two individuals, and it was comparatively much less uncomfortable/confusing than the pair of twins we went to high school with...one of them grew so annoyed with it that she went by her middle name only just so people would stop associating her with her twin as a matching set, even though they were totally different people. the two of you are very good about meeting rupert where he's at as a human, and as a twin growing up it really does mean the world for our individuality and separation of identity to be supported and reinforced by at least one person in our lives (like our parents and siblings), because the world around us tends not to!

I have this memory of them burned into my brain from when they were only a few weeks old and both still under 6lbs. While my sister had some time to sort herself I had one baby on each shoulder with crossed arms patting their backs. My own youngest daughter was playing at my feet and that wonderful new baby smell. If you could bottle contented love that moment would be among the most potent and heady mix of love and happiness. You both have it all to come and I know it’s a cliche but it true, it does go by so fast, I have one daughter away at university training to be a nurse and my soon to be 17 year old who will be applying to go off to uni later this year. I adore my mostly grown children but I still wish I could have the early years back sometimes.

I did these tests when naming my five kids: - could I spew out all of them in order without stumbling if someone asked me my children’s names? Often there’s a name we liked but it didn’t rap well with the others. - were the initials okay? No VD or BJ, etc. - I don’t care for diminutives so we tried to pick names that weren’t easily shortened-although some people are determined as when my own father picked up newborn Noah and said, “Hi Noey! It’s okay. Grandpa is here.” 😡🤣 - We checked to make sure there were no murderers or infamous criminals or politicians with that name. - we checked on the social security website to make sure the name wasn’t in the current top 100 so the kid would not potentially be sitting in class with a bunch of kids with the same name. - we didn’t want the poor kid to have to spell or repeat the name all their life. To test this, I’d tell friends a name we were considering. If they said, “What?” Or “How do you spell that?” it got scratched off the list. Another no go were names with optional spellings. My own sister was a Cheri. There are ten ways to spell it and she got misnamed mail and medical records, etc. her whole life. - final test was to stand at the door and yell the name. Like when it’s time for dinner. Any name that didn’t yell nicely was eliminated. We’d go to the hospital in the evening when it wasn’t busy and our friend would page the name in her soft, hospital-y voice: “Horace McGillicutty, please call the operator. Dr. McGillicutty, call the operator, please.” We’d be sitting in the cafeteria listening. 😂 Finally, hubby (professional musician) would announce the potential name from the stage during a gig like he was introducing a guest guitarist. The unaware audience would clap. 🤣 If the name sounded great no matter what the preborn person grew up to be, it would make the cut. 🤎🥰

I'm German. My great grandmother was named Wilhemina, we called her "Oma Minna". The story behind the name was that when birth began, the mid-wife said: " Oh, this is gonna be a strong boy." My great great grandfather was so happy that he ran away to the registry office to get the documents for "Wilhelm". In the end it was a strong girl and in the registry office they told him they wouldn't change the name but they could add a letter. So she became "Wilhelmina".

@Mare41613 күн бұрын
And in the past (I don’t know if it’s still true), the diminutive name used day-to-day would be based on a middle name, because the Dutch had an incredibly strong tradition of naming children after relatives, so there would be multiple cousins in the same generation of the same family who had the exact same name. (There are so many people named Cornelis Willem and Phillipinna Aletta Johanna in my family, going back for *centuries.*)

It would pair well with other shorter two-syllable names (e.g. Isa, Emma, Una, Lora, Hannah (or Hana, which is also a Japanese feminine name meaning "flower"), Kara.) I personally always wanted to name twin girls Heather and Erica for science nerd reasons, because they sound completely unrelated, but Ericaceae is the botanical family that heather belongs to. If you liked Honoria but don't want the silent H, there are similar names like Annora. Fun fact: Theodore and Edward can both have Ted/Teddy as a nickname!
