I have quite the collection of novelisations of movies from back in the day, definitely feel it's a bit of a loss that it's not as popular to do these days. They would often have more context as well as the novelisations were generally written alongside the development of the movie so would include scenes that eventually were cut from the final release. EDIT - I paused the vid to write that and now see that you somewhat also cover that :)

This was a fun little film. I considered it as a "Try Hard with a Vergeltungswaffe". A Die hard with a Vengeance Rocket (V2), if you will. The train sequence did feel like a slow ride to nowhere, but we had plenty of laughs along the way. I was one of a small minority that also enjoyed Hard Rain. Someone seemed determined to push Christian Slater as the next 'Everyman' quipping hero. What went wrong? I found them enjoyable.

Broken Arrow has two meanings in the military and they are context sensitive: 1) An accidental event that involves nuclear weapons or nuclear components but does not create the risk of nuclear war. 2) A code phrase that a ground unit is facing imminent destruction from enemy attack and all available air forces within range are to provide air support immediately.

As a really obscure side note, the movie The Punisher with Travolta used my 69 Pontiac as the template and the wreaked one on Bridge. It was actually a 69 custom S , GTO clone. We went rafting in Glen Canyon the year after Broken Arrow came out. The river in the canyon is below a dam, and the water comes off the bottom of the reservoir (as opposed to taking surface water off the reservoir) so the river water is about 50 degrees F, which feels like ice water in the heat of Arizona. They filmed several action scenes along the river, and you can see the actors avoiding unnecessary contact with the frigid water. And the huge gasp Hale releases when he pops out from being fully submerged I am convinced was not acting, but a physiological reaction to being in that freezing water.

Back when I was in Strategic Air Command we used three terms to describe accidents, incidents or deficiencies when it came to nukes. “Broken Arrow” described an accident involving nukes, “Bent Spear” for incidents involving nukes and “Dull Sword” for deficiencies. Terms I’ll never forget because they drummed it into our heads every day.
