This movie is cinematic genius, in my opinion. The supernatural element was as brilliant as it was unexpected. It was a very original take on a pirate story and gave it a delicious element of creepiness and unpredictability. I can't imagine anyone else but Johnny Depp in the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. His portrayal of the now iconic character was inspired genius!

Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow is one of those times where, as an actor, he did too good of a job. Ever since Pirates, I can't help but see bits of Jack Sparrow in every role he's done. It's a good thing that he's made a name for himself for doing quirky roles and he's a big enough name where he can afford to pick and choose which projects to take on, otherwise he might have been typecast as Jack Sparrow like characters for the remainder of his career.

She passed away late April in 2008, and I would give anything to share One more day with her. I was never the favorite grandchildren, but she was always my favorite Grandparent. The Interceptor was actually the tall ship The Lady Washington, built in Aberdeen WA in 1989. It's even stated in the credits at the end. It was built and still sails for the Gray Harbor Historical Seaport group.

The Black Pearl was also real, it was built on a powered ship called the HMS Sunset, it was then later transformed into the Queen Anne's Revenge and then back to the Black Pearl. Unfortunately it was scrapped after Pirates 4.

This was one of those movies that didn’t have the right to be as good as it was. My friends and I went in a whim and I absolutely LOVED it! In fact, it was this movie that sold me on the blue ray format. I could never really tell the difference when seeing displays at the store, but one day they had PotC playing. That was a movie that I knew exactly what it looked like on DVD being played on a CRT TV. That’s the movie that I use when I get a new TV. If it looks like I’m looking out my window I know it’s a good one!

It was very cutting edge technology at the time, ILM had to create software just to animate the tentacles and the particle physics simulation for the water on it. Plus they added some unique details based on Bill Nighy's on set performance capture, he was wearing a motion capture suit and dots on his face, so they could capture his movements exactly. This was when motion capture was still in its infancy, so it is even more impressive.

It is true that Disneyland used some real skulls/skeletons when Pirates of the Caribbean first opened at Disneyland in the 60s. They were donated by UCLA, as at the time, fake skeletons didn't look realistic enough. But as time went on and technology advanced, all the real skeletons were replaced with fake ones (and also given a proper burial). But supposedly one real skull is still there - inside the Captain's treasure room where a skeleton in bed is looking at a treasure map with a magnifying glass. The skull on the bed's headboard is the last remaining real one. Also, just a fun little fact, the Shanghai version of the Pirates ride is the first (and only) of the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions that is based on the movies. The rest all came before the movies (though elements/characters from the movie have been added to those rides since the movie got so popular). And Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida initially was not supposed to get a Pirates ride, as they felt Florida was too close to the actual Caribbean. Instead, that park was going to get a western themed version, called Western River Expedition, which was going to be part of a 2nd phase of the park (but that's a whole 'nother story). But when WDW opened in 1971, lots of people were asking "Where's the Pirate ride?", so Imagineering rushed to shoehorn a version of the ride into the park as quick as they could. As for Eisner, before coming to Disney, he was President & CCO of the Paramount movie studio. He came to Disney in 1984 along with Frank Wells. And at first it was a great move, as Wells was the money guy (like Roy O. Disney was) and Eisner the creative guy (like Walt Disney). But then Wells was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 1994. Eisner then took over being President as well as being CEO and Chariman of the Board for Disney. And things slowly started going down hill and Eisner was sinking the company with lots of bad decisions. He was eventually ousted in 2005 after a 2 year "Save DIsney" campaign organized by Roy E. Disney (Roy O's son & Walt's nephew).

The writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have admitted in an interview they were huge fans of The Monkey Island games, which were loosely lampooning the Disney ride anyway. Just poking fun at the way pirates insult each other during combat and how grog is like sulphuric acid in certain situations, plus the fourth wall breaks too. 🤣 The dog with the keys in the prison was apparently in the original ride at Disneyland. I don't know because I have never experienced the ride in my life.

The Special Edition of Monkey Island on Xbox Live has an audio commentary from the game's creator, who said he did loosely base the game on the Disney ride and a book called On Stranger Tides, but he put his own humour into it. He created the SCUMM interface specifically for the game, which at the time was groundbreaking, it changes the music dynamically based on what is happening in the game and it was meant to replace the text adventure games that existed before. So instead of typing in commands, you just click on the action buttons instead. There was an early version of the interface in The Day of The Tentacle game before, which he also worked on, but it was very basic.

# 11: they wanted real rough seas. So they chartered two offshore supply vessels the NRC Responder (Black Pearl) and Megan T Miller (intercepter). They went a 100 miles off of Norfolk and wanted to see the real sh*t. The whole crew was sea sick they lost multiple cameras and the waves broke the wheelhouse windows on the Megan T. They superimposed the two ships on the osvs and all the movements and conditions were real. I watched the videos a few times.

They actually ended up using the tall ship The Lady Washington for the Interceptor in the movie. It's one of the big deals for my hometown in Aberdeen Washington. Teaching summer school for AHS in 2003, we got to take the students to a special showing at our local theater with the guys from Grays Harbor Historical Seaport since they built the ship back in I think 1989. They and the ship have a thanks in the ending credits. There was even a legal fight with Disney over them making changes to the ship for the movie and not restoring it back to the prior condition and rigging after the filming wrapped.

Great adventure movie... I've only watched the other PoTC movies like once or twice each... this one is already a classic to me and I watch it frequently. Everything just works in this movie. Great Movie, thanks for the video. This came out the year my son turned 4, our daughter was born and we began our habit of multiple WDW trips per year. My son was hugely into it when the first two sequels came out and we had all pirate everything. I even built him a large pirate ship bed in his bedroom, he had all the memorabilia, and we always went all out for Disney Cruise Line's Pirate Days at Sea. Good times and great memories! My son is now a senior in college in Hawaii and I wonder where the time went. We had kind of a Toy Story 3 / Bonnie moment the month before he left for his freshmen year of college when the two of us finally dismantled his long since outgrown pirate ship bed. I had spent months building it when he was young: It had a mast and sails, built in storage, a trundle bed, and a giant steering wheel from a real boat. It was so big the only way to get it out of there was to completely tear it apart. Taking the bed apart was very tough for me to get through emotionally as he prepared to go halfway around the world and become an adult. It was almost symbolic of him walking away from childhood. We still have the ship steering wheel on a pedestal though! I think I'll call my son now...thanks again for the video!

My daughter turned this movie this morning and she absolutely LOVED it. I kept smiling and cracking up at Johnny's lines, while my daughter was in awe of his performance. Needless to say she's a fan of his now. We love you Johnny!!

To be fair, back then, Hugh Jackman was not really known to the American audience. Let us remember, the first X-Men came out in 2000, but it wasn't a really big hit, like comic book movies are today (I mean, it was profitable and all, but the actors who played the parts in that movie, didn't become living legends, like it happens today. They only became that, years later), so he was only known to comic book fans mostly, and the Pirates was going to be a family-friendly PG-13 movie, so they wanted someone that was easily recognizable by older audiences to play the part of Jack Sparrow, and that would attract families to see the movie. On top of it, Johnny Depp did the unthinkable. He created a unique pirate character. I believe the movie would've not been that successful, if he had played a regular heroic pirate character (it had been played over and over, and sometimes if you want things to work, you need to do something so peculiar, so unique, so insane that it will either work, or flop, and with the pirate movie genre as dead as it was back then, the whole crazy take on Jack Sparrow was what probably made the movie so unique and appealing, because it was not just a pirates movie, it was a movie about pirates with a lead character that it was as insane and loony as you can get, while also being incredibly pirate-ish and adventurous).

I used to work at superstore - photo and audio dept. where vhs and dvd was still a thing. I have seen this movie at least 3 or 4 times a day on repeat on tv displays, good times lol

Pirates is an amazing experience (the ride) because the pirates are the OG ones. All their faces LOOK like they are from the 60s, if that makes sense. They just look old in the design. Same for Haunted Mansion. Just looking at the Disney people working on developing the rides, the fact the designs are that old and still there today as rides. That is why Disneyland, when not overcrowded and hot, is the best place on the planet. ALSO: The part when Jack arrives on his sinking ship and steps on the dock, that shot was completed amazingly. Apparently, the DOCK is moving toward Jack and the sinking ship, not the other way around. I watched the director's commentary and was blown away by that.

Out of all the films, 1 and 3 are my favourites. PotC 1 will always be my top, since I watched it so much and it was the first of them. 2 was a filler, which after 3 came out, made me like the film a bit more. 3 was everything 1 was but more. The action scenes, the comedy, the acting was amazing. 4 and 5 were both blah, but that's because I felt they should have stopped after 3. I always find it funny that when Pirates first came out, it was the first time majority of the popular was introduced to Johnny Depp. So whenever I said Johnny Depp was my favourite actor, people would always say "oh, so youre on the bandwagon too." I would fight for the fact that Johnny Depp was my favourite actor since I was 3, 10 years before Pirates even came out, with Edward Scissorhands, and that my favourite movie he is in, will always be Sleepy Hollow.

I enjoy all three, 1 is the best because it shows us all the characters, 3 I love for Elizabeth's armory, Calypso's freeing ... and that it's one of the secondary characters that understands what to do, and the final sea battle ... also Lord what'shisname so completely not understanding that it wasn't "just good business" in his final scene. 2 is good because it sets up 3. I watch all of them periodically, and I knew Depp for Cry Baby and What's Eating Gilbert Grape ... wasn't that taken with Edward Scissorhands, although I did watch it. 4 and 5 have interesting stuff in them, but ... I don't think they realized that Depp's character was never the lead, he was what made the leads work. Which is sad.

@@omegatired I agree with Jack is not good as a main character, thats the same reason Lori was a side character in his own show. I didnt see Crybaby until years after Pirates 1 came out. I didnt really like Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. I still haven't seen but really want to watch Ed Wood, mind you, there are a lot of Depp films I need to get into actually watching. Ninth Gate was a great movie. I sadly couldn't watch Fear and Loathing, I can't handle watching things with lots of sex, drugs, or violence.

@@littleboo2002 I somehow acquired two copies of the Ninth Gate and watch it occasionally. I also have From Hell, which is a hard one for me to watch. It hits far too close to what I'd think is reality. I haven't tried Fear and Loathing yet. But I found Blow fascinating, and very sad. He picks and chooses his projects with a lot of consideration for character, I think. I need to see Ed Wood as well, but at the moment, I'm weeding out DVDs because I have both the collection I made and one I inherited from a friend ... Adding to it has become detrimental to space. Actually those were real skeletons when the ride opened. At the time it was easier to get skeletons from a medical supply business, then convincing artificial skeletons. In time, the real skeletons would be replaced, with realistic looking artificial ones, and I think the only one that is still real, is the skull on the headboard of the pirate looking at the map.

You were correct...Will Turner was the main hero, and though Jack Sparrow was undeniably awesome he was merely a supporting character. Sadly, this fact being forgotten was why the fourth and fifth films were less-than-awesome.

Pirates set an example that Haunted Mansion failed to live up to for many. I actually really liked both. Both had their fair share of darkness, but were overall filled with a lighthearted nature. People seem to forget how dark the Butler character actually was. He killed a woman, and made it seem like she committed suicide. This resulted in the master killing himself and cursing everyone in the house to be stuck as ghosts. Then he tricked a woman looking like the one he killed, to come there so he could kill her to release him from the curse. Barbosa in contrast stole a cursed treasure. He had no desire to kill Elizabeth, as he only cut her hand. Only after being duped did he desire more blood, and I contend that was to save face with his crew to avoid a mutiny.

I bought the DVD when it came out mostly because it had a full ride through of the original Pirates ride at Disneyland. I did not regret it and got a great movie as a bonus! Thanks for all the wonderful info, Minty! Your videos are always very well done!

Fun fact #11. There was only one real ship used in the movie. The HMS Interceptor was played by the tall ship Lady Washington from Anacortes Wa. She was also used in Star Trek Generations as the tall ship they used for the promotion ceremony for Worf. Lady Washington tours the west cost of the US and sometimes farther out, and you can tour her for free, and some times they will take people out on a “cruise”. But the cruise does cost a few dollars.

One interesting fact, there was a script circulating at the time this movie was getting underway for an animated pirate movie based on the computer game Secret Of Monkey Island. Fans of the game insist that this movie rips off that script and the game. That would be ironic, because the game’s designer Ron Gilbert said he got the idea for the game while riding Pirates Of The Caribbean at Disneyland.

I remember going to go see this in theaters man as a six years old kid I really loved the supernatural element in the pirate film that was twist I didn't see coming when Jack met with his former crew mate Koehler who grabs Jack by neck as soon as his arm turned into skeleton that a caught me off guard then Elizabeth seeing Barbossa and the others into skeleton undead form was epic that immediately made the movie for me I knew I was in for ride. I'm bummed that Depp won't return for sixth pirates movie I respect his decision but hope he can be convinced or decides to reconsider returning for a proper send off

Great Movie and I Love that this movie was based on the ride at Disneyland!! Also I love the scene where they show the dog with the keys in his Mouth not helping the guy in jail just as the ride you see that as well!! Also the premire on June 28th 2003 when the movie premiered is actually my birthday but i was born in 79' not 2003', so Awesome!! Great job Mr. Minty!!
