• 10 Things You Didn't K...
The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland [ˈneːdərlɑnt] (About this soundlisten)), informally Holland, is a country located in Western Europe with territories in the Caribbean. It is the largest of four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In Europe, the Netherlands consists of twelve provinces, bordering Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the northwest, with maritime borders in the North Sea with those countries and the United Kingdom. In the Caribbean, it consists of three special municipalities: the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. The country's official language is Dutch, with West Frisian as a secondary official language in the province of Friesland, and English and Papiamento as secondary official languages in the Caribbean Netherlands. Dutch Low Saxon and Limburgish are recognised regional languages (spoken in the east and southeast respectively), while Dutch Sign Language, Sinte Romani, and Yiddish are recognised non-territorial languages.
The four largest cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht. Amsterdam is the country's most populous city and nominal capital, while The Hague holds the seat of the States General, Cabinet and Supreme Court. The Port of Rotterdam is the busiest seaport in Europe, and the busiest in any country outside East Asia and Southeast Asia, behind only China and Singapore. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the busiest airport in the Netherlands, and the third busiest in Europe. The country is a founding member of the European Union, Eurozone, G10, NATO, OECD, and WTO, as well as a part of the Schengen Area and the trilateral Benelux Union. It hosts several intergovernmental organisations and international courts, many of which are centred in The Hague, which is consequently dubbed 'the world's legal capital'.
Netherlands literally means "lower countries" in reference to its low elevation and flat topography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding 1 m (3.3 ft) above sea level, and nearly 26% falling below sea level. Most of the areas below sea level, known as polders, are the result of land reclamation that began in the 14th century. Colloquially or informally the Netherlands is occasionally referred to by the pars pro toto Holland. With a population of 17.5 million people, all living within a total area of roughly 41,800 km2 (16,100 sq mi)-of which the land area is 33,500 km2 (12,900 sq mi)-the Netherlands is the 16th most densely populated country in the world and the second-most densely populated country in the European Union, with a density of 523 people per square kilometre (1,350 people/sq mi). Nevertheless, it is the world's second-largest exporter of food and agricultural products by value, owing to its fertile soil, mild climate, intensive agriculture, and inventiveness.
The Netherlands has been a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a unitary structure since 1848. The country has a tradition of pillarization and a long record of social tolerance, having legalized abortion, prostitution and human euthanasia, along with maintaining a liberal drug policy. The Netherlands abolished the death penalty in Civil Law in 1870, though it was not completely removed until a new constitution was approved in 1983.

@Gad Headhunter You sure need a lot of words to make your point, as far as you made one. I was evasive due to the p.c. cowards who report everything they are offended by. The import of people with a conservative mindset however does indeed include muslims, but definitely not soley. Seeing somewhere near 300.000 people arrive and settle in the NLs each year of which most are rather Orthodox and conservative, my point was a valid one.

Had some similar experience when I went to Taiwan and (South)Korea in 2007. We were a group of 25 students + 2 teachers. I'm 6ft4 myself (1m90) and there were 11 who were taller than me. So you would never get lost in the subway in Asia for example as the guys were taller than the rest of the crowd and the girls didn't have black hair :) Especially the people in the northern provinces of the Netherland are quite tall. The people in the south are noticably shorter. I have been to a wedding years ago, which was in NoordBrabant (the south) and I was by far the tallest of everyone present at that wedding. Still a part of those present were my own family, so I doubt that body length is only an evolutionary effect. Here in Groningen, I'm of "average" length. Over 2m05 is still rather exceptional, but I know over 5 people among my fellow students at university who are taller than 2m05 so it is for sure not a "fluke".

Went for a long weekend in Madrid some years back and had a hilarious moment there. I noticed the people were shorter, but an old lady crossed my path and only at the last moment she noticed my 187cm giant stature. She was tiny, like 150cm or smaller and when she looked up, she saw something quite un-Spanish: pale skin, a head full of blonde curls and all that towering far above her. Her mouth dropped open in awe and i could not help but laugh out loud.

Loved your look at the explanation of "cancer tasty". Keep in mind that while swearing with diseases, it's still mostly frowned upon by dutch people in the larger scheme of things, especially when it concerns cancer. But it's not really that strange that the most offensive expletive turned into a general one. It happened to "fuck" in the english language where "Fuck you" has a negative connotation while you can also say something is "Fucking tasty" which is a positive thing.

about the African country with tall people. I believe their tall people are taller then the tall Dutch people, but the average height of in the country is lower. edit: also the saying "doe normaal" or act normal in english, does indeed partially mean act like the status quo. but that is not completely correct, there is a longer version that shows this a bit better "doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" which roughly translates to act normal, then you already act weird/crazy enough. which shows the dual meaning of "doe normaal" which is act like yourself, don't try to be someone else.

"Doe normaal" is a good expression but the extended version "Doe maar normaal, dat is al gek genoeg" is better. It basically translates to "Just act normal, that's crazy enough." As far as the conformity goes, there are plenty of people who stand out from the crowd but in general we don't appreciate people showing off in a dramatic, flashy or bragging manner. Being rich or extremely talented at something doesn't mean you're more important than the rest of us, it just means you're rich or extremely talented. I hope that made sense, hah.

i remember in the eighties almost everybody said something anti-german on a regular basis. there were also typical things to say to a german, like telling them you want your grandfathers bike back (nazis liked to confiscate bikes). nowadays it makes no sense to hate germans as practically nobody alive in germany today was an adult during ww2, the people that were teenagers then are now in their ninetees and it's hard to blame them for anything either as most of them would not have memory of a germany that was not under nazi control, they were indoctrinated from birth. also most of the younger people now didn't have a parent or grandparent telling them first hand stories about the war while growing up so they simply don't know what it was like. for me this reality makes it very difficult to take people seriously that want someone alive today to apologize for things that happened long before they were alive.

The "scientific" natural selection explanation is wrong.. it's diet and medicine. Just look at average heights in South korea over the last 50 years. That is not natural selection. An exerpt from an article: --- According to a 2014 survey, Korean men have grown about 15 cm (5.9 in) and Korean women have grown about 20 cm (7.8 in) over the past 100 years. Isn't it a HUGE change? In fact, it is said that Koreans have grown the most in the world over the past 100 years. Even within the family, you can notice a difference in height from generations. --- ^^ this is not natural selection, its diet and healthcare. I'm not sure why these informational channels keep spouting this oft-repeated non-scientific thing..

The Netherlands are so much more than just tulips, windmills, wooden shoes, prostitution and drugs. european history goes back thousands of years in stead a few hundred. It shoud be tought in schools in America, because it goes back further than American history. but then again history lessons teach us, gouvernments don't learn from history they keep making the same mistakes, they probably make a living out of it, or they would have changed it......

The Dutch explorers did map the outline of Australia and New Zealand, but there was little trade possible. They valued a small artificial island in the harbor of Nagasaki for more because there they could trade with Japan. In exchange for European, Chinese and Indonesian products they could get Japanese products unique in the world and of very high trade value. Musea in both countries still have those items in exhibition. But World War II put an end to that good relation as well.

'Doing normal' is something Protestant, so called Calvinism. People in the southern part of the Netherlands are Catholic though. They're cultural more similar to Flemish Belgians. Way different then sober protestants. Religion differences between Dutch Protestants and Catholics also played a very important role leading up to the 80 years war with the Catholic Spanish. For example, Catholic people (who live 'under the rivers' , like Dutch people say) celebrate carnaval every year. Which is a 5 day feast of everything but doing normal.

As the narrator is American I assume the word 'slag' was translated from another meaning in Dutch which is like 'battle' or 'blow', but in the case of hagelslag it takes meaning from the Dutch word 'neerslag', meaning 'precipitation' or 'rainfall', referring to making it rain chocolate on your sandwich. Also, the Dutch and German language comparison was such a bad example, because overall German sounds a lot harsher than Dutch, as Dutch also borrows from English (living right in between them), making it softer in general. In the example given the narrator uses his softest German voice and then for the same sentence in Dutch really exaggerates the accent people have here in the west of the country, which is the accent tourists and expats pick up in Amsterdam (the hard 'g' and 'r') thinking that is how everyone speaks in the Netherlands, but most people actually do not. He also pronounces 'geschiendenis' very weirdly. He is not teaching it correctly. You are not supposed to talk like you are clearing your throat, ever. So a tip for anyone trying to speak proper civilized Dutch, learn a soft 'g' and 'r' and you won't spit on people so much or terrorize their ears.

Actually, a lot of Dutch aren't very fond of using diseases as curse words. Or at least, the ones I converse with hate using them. Around where I live we perceive people who taunt with diseases as 'asociaal', so antisocial, rude, usually people who can't quite think of any better insults. Wishing diseases upon someone is, in my opinion, absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy, or any of those other diseases. If people taunt with those things I usually tell them to pick up a dictionary to become more verbally adapt and come up with better insults. Also, on the topic of WWII... our generations today have not participated in the war. Neither the Dutch nor the Germans who are alive today had anything to do with the occupation of our country, or the mass murderings of the Jewish population. A lot of us (probably not everyone) also learned to distinguish between Germans and nazis. The first are the inhabitants of the country known as Germany, the second was a group consisting of Germans, and people from other countries as well, who followed the man with the creepy mustache. Not all Germans were bad, not all Dutch were good, either. I don't see any reason to hate people from Germany, definitely not those who are alive today. They're simply people like the rest of us.

Cursing with diseases is really frowned upon by most groups in the Netherlands. A majority dislikes using cancer to curse and many will get upset and mad if you do. In most areas it's more accepted to swear with god or sex than with disease.

A few weeks ago I learned from a British (BBC) documentary that the Frisian language is the source of the English language, because a number of Frisians moved to England and became the most important language there. Before this they spoke Keltish in England, but the Keltish tribes were chased away.and thus came what linguists called Anglo-Frisian.
@timetraveler43
@timetraveler43 2 жыл бұрын
The Frisians moved across the channel with the Anglo Saxons, Jutes and a mixture of other Germanic tribes. Re the Dutch G- a large majority pronounce it very much like the softer Spanish J. Only certain dialects say it harsher.

Mind, they're talking about *average height.* So you'll see a lot of women around 5'5 feet and a few women that are over 6 feet tall. Then there's some men who may reach 6'6 feet and who have to mind their head when walking through doorways.
@nikkiross128b
@nikkiross128b 2 жыл бұрын
Did you know that the people in the North are taller than in the South? The height is in my opinion not caused by natural selection but by the food - we produce a LOT of meat and milk and in particular these are full of added growth hormones… And “doe normaal” also applies to not displaying your wealth. If you are rich don’t drive in a Maserati but drive a normal car. However, this is changing. The real rich are driving Maserati’s anyway, all over the world. It’s also taboo to show that you stand out in other respects, except maybe in sports or music. Further, we are descendants of slave traders but many people are not aware of that. Only recently this received more attention due to descendants of slaves raising awareness to it… and also a lot of immigrants being shocked by the form of the traditional Sinterklaas festivity (Black Pete). That is also changing currently, more awareness. Last, we even have a swearing word combining 2 diseases “kankermongool”. This is extra insulting.

Should you wish to learn a bit about how Australia was founded, check out the tv-series "Against the wind (1978)". And no, England was not too full, the aristocracy and wealthy upper middle class at the time just thought it more convenient to transport petty criminals to the colonies, since very few regular citizens wished to emigrate there. Before the British started transporting petty criminals to their colonies, they would simply hang shoplifters, pick pockets, and other petty criminals who were regularly in their early teens or even younger.

Relations with the Germans (or with peoples we would call German these days) haven't 'always' been bad , that's mostly just been a WW2 (and perhaps WW1 as well) legacy. Before that era, relations generally weren't too bad, and I'm glad to see they are returning to that now.

I would say the dutch people are on average taller than the national dutch average would indicate. Since the national average takes the average height off all dutch citizens even those with different heritage. For example an asian family moves to the netherlands and they then have kids that are born in the netherlands, those kids when they are adults would be included into the national average since they would be dutch citizens. Considering that about half the dutch population aren't native dutch people but immigrants from former colonies and the surge of guest workers that happened in the 1960's. An argument could be made that the dutch people with the actual multiple generations of dutch natives are on average taller. When i went there for a business trip, the majority the (native) dutch guys between 18-28 years old where easily above 190cm or 6'3". Though ofc that's just my perspective on things so it could be wrong, but to me at least this makes sense.

Sorry, but the person who is "presenting" the video doesnt know what he is talking about. The pronountiation of the dutch words are terrible. He is correct that we have "beschuit met muisjes" (the white/pink or white blue sprinkles) when a baby is born. The thing is: muisjes are NOT hagelslag. The "muisjes" are an anise based sprinkle. While Hagelslag is chocolate. He makes it sound like they are interchangeble and the only difference is the colour. That's absolutly wrong. We have also fruithagel, which is sugarbased. Non of them are alike what so ever. Also the swearing with diseases part is only in Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland popular. So only 2 of the 12 provinces. The hard G is only a part of the Netherlands again mostly in the coastal provinces Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland. The southern and east provinces have more the soft G. I dont hear him say anything about Limburg who have seperate dialects which aare conected to Kleverlands or Middelfrankische Ripuarisch dialects and these are only a few of the seperate language families the Limburgs-dialect is drawing from. If you wanted to educate yourself....that was the wrong video to do it with.

The thing with the G is not a complete explanation cuz in the middle and the south of the country we have a soft G, very soft. Just so you know. Its a pity they only name Friesland as being different but the same goes for the south east the province of Limburg and most importantly my hometown Maastricht. We also speak dialect which is a mix of like 50% German, 30% Dutch and 20% French and along with that also our way of life in the south. The South has never been properly recognized so therefore this remark.
