How to survive Dutch weather. Well: its shit. You will get a bit of a raw throat from the windy and rainy weather. But we have found the ultimate solution for this! A liquorice product called 'drop', and that we have in 100s of different tastes and shapes. You might not like it now, but you will, when you have encounterd Dutch weather. Suckling on a dropje you will experience the soothing effect it has on the throat. And once you found a drop that you wont puke out directly: after three, four drops: you will be hooked forever and plunder the bag of dropjes (if its the right kind) like most of us do.

The weather in the Netherlands is not that bad. Rain often seems to fall during the night. The British are worse off, as our weather usually comes from the west and their rainfall is in that case during the daytime. Due to the climate change however the wind in the upper athmosphere drops off sometimes and the clouds stick longer above the same area as happened a few months ago in the south east of the country and neighbouring Belgium and Germany. Due the measures taken in the last decades the aftermath here was 'only' some localized flooding. It was not as severy as in in Germany and Belgium with dozens of victims.

The infinite supply of words about the weather we got is the whole spectrum of different weathertypes, severities and feelings we get from them so while some may refer to the different feelings about the same weather a lot are also about different weather conditions :') Like this very hard rain we'd say Zeikregen which roughly means pissing rain which if you've ever had to hold up for a bit and finally went to the toilet at last you'd know exactly how much rain that is :p Another we call Noodweer is literally translated to emergency weather which we tend to say if we have a combination of very strong rain/hail/snow and strong winds, in other words on the side of dangerous weatherconditions. Motregen or Miezeren is what we say for the very large amounts of tiny raindrops you get sometimes. You'll have to live here for a good while to really understand all of them but those are quite common ones.

We Dutch 🇳🇱always think it rains a lot 🌨 We use the BUIENRADER ALWAYS 😜 But we are used to that. Bad weather doesn't have to ruin your day. Rain is annoying ☔☂️ but you don't have to stay home for it! There are excellent waterproof rain jackets that prevent you from getting soaked..😏😬
