"It's no wonder you think like this. You have a tricky brain that evolved for survival. Not happiness." Hearing that hit me like a freight train at full speed. I've never heard it phrased like that before.

I never heard musterbation but another good one I heard is "shoulding all over yourself". So when I catch myself using should statements I remember "Hey! Stop shoulding all over yourself!" Imagining a stop sign when you say this to yourself is also helpful.

Lately I've fallen off exercising regularly and I've been wondering why I just can't stick to moving my body on a regular basis. There's a lot of external factors, of course, but most importantly, it's my mindset. I'm so often telling myself what I SHOULD be doing, I never stop to ask myself what I want to be doing. And I DO want to exercise. Somehow that simple reframe of exercise as something I do want to do made it so so much easier to do. Instead of trying to force myself to do something because I "should," it's so much more helpful for my brain to find the reason I want to do it, even if it's hard or unpleasant in the short term.

Hey, thanks for sharing this. Ive been doing the “I should really exercise” thing a ton too. It really helps to know that some one else is working through this mindset too. Good luck friend, we can do this! I don’t know how, but we will.

For me, it’s about sticking to a schedule. Can’t do the workout if I am not there. So then I have to schedule all the other things that are interfering with my time. Having done this, I realize that for me, no longer basing my actions on what I feel like doing. I show up at the right place at the right time. I’ll just complete the task. Doesn’t have to be the greatest work out either. I can just say I’m maintaining.

I slipped and fell in the shower almost two weeks ago and hurt my lower hamstring. The dr told me I can’t lift weights for at least two weeks and it’s been so depressing. The gym is one of the best thing and big part of my life. I do it for stress release and also lifestyle/aesthetics. I’m addicted to consistency and good physical habits.

Metacognitive therapy (MCT) has been much more helpful to me than CBT. I used to ruminate constantly and it made me, well, miserable. It sounds ridiculously simple, but Detached Mindfulness is the best technique I know, and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from generalized anxiety.

What better way to exercise detached mindfulness, than being helpful to other people. I myself care less about the outcome When I go into it focused on how others will benefit and where my benefit is not readily obvious but entirely intangible.

3:06 emotional reasoning is so often “my truth” and used to present people’s feelings and perceptions as facts. My doesn’t equal The truth and it’s a really damaging distortion to our society when we do this at large and make judgements based purely on people’s feelings or experiences. Feelings and experiences are valid, but they are distortions based on self perception and information gathered. They are important to acknowledge but are not the the main decision making factor..

I think that Anxiety = caution + a reaction. Sometimes people only focus on the ‘caution’ part of their anxiety, by trying to not have anxious thoughts in the first place. But I think that it’s usually better to focus on the reaction, since that usually allows for more agency. For example, say your ‘reaction’ is pessimism. As an alternative, you might say that it’s ok to acknowledge there are roadblocks/pitfalls to account for (caution)-but that you’ll also try to stop assuming that those hindrances will *automatically* cause you to fail. (Of course, other courses of action would need to be applied to other types of reactions, such as overcompensations & compulsions.)

Donald Hoffman reached the same conclusion that our brains are designed for survival rather than accuracy, through a lot of mathematical models and computer simulations. I am fascinated that 2 unrelated scientific fields reached the same conclusion from a different path. Because of his conclusions we are at the verge of redefining our most fundamental physics models.

Haven't check Anna K. content in a while (like more than a year or 2) and BOY the scripting/writing quality WENT UP, wow !! It was already good back then but BOI. The delivery, pace and informational level is on point on every aspect. Filming and editing too (but those were already perfect from what I remember) Content seems much more relevant and researched also (to me, at least). Congrats on the evolution !

Dr Burns is kind of incredible. They have a podcast the feeling good podcast and it’s been so helpful listening in on real sessions with people who are very depressed and in one instance a terminally ill patient. It’s like a simplified user manual for the brain and depression. Very very much worth a listen.

After a several intense sessions of me unloading everything one by one, my therapist took a minute and instead of starting to give me solutions to my issues, he just handed me a copy of this at the end of one session and asked me to go through it when I feel like it. And boy oh boy, now when I think about it, this was the beginning of the help I needed. Now, I feel much more aware of things. Thanks to all the patient therapists who know when to help!

in the end you live your live within your paradigma, core beliefs etc, these can slowly become more negative or degrade. To update, positively reinforce, replace elements of that system, you first need to realise that it exists and can change. Most people are set in their ways, and will only change in crisis. Severe depression I think is when the paradigma breaks and is not replaced.

One thing to keep in mind is that this interpretation is extremely neurotypical and normative e.g. the establishment decides what is "normal" and "healthy" and, well, the establishment is usually wrong in the long run.

Just regarding thought processes, the most difficult to answer are McQs, then also biased and unbiased news and then fake news and information manipulation is also tricky because organizations work with futures and opinion and others with past and sometimes they push the false negatives and false positives and various hypothesis which is sometime difficult to differentiate raw truths and or facts from opinion and wants, needs, desires, and the motivation to change information that’s convenient not to debate and or argue 😊

It's best to have rational, reality-based arguments to counter the distortions. I'm *not* talking affirmations, I'm talking cold, calculating, logic. Even if your countee thought/s is just a neutral assessment of fact or self-observation. They're powerful enough to counter the bs, they also can help you to think more consciously and critically across the board which, at least for me, was trremendously liberating.

I wish you had kept the 7 original descriptions, I feel like they were illustrative of the lens that we used to have regarding depressive mind frames. I personally don't think it was that bad to understand, and kind of shows how disconnected was the approach from a more hands on treatment of therapy and instead regarded descriptions and registration as the objective of academia.
