Misawa’s death is an absolute tragedy. By that point of his career he should’ve absolutely been wrapping it up and stayed within a backstage role, but he really wanted to build up the promotion more. He knew there was a good chance he was going to die in the ring and had a letter written specifically FOR that moment so he could try to reassure the wrestler who he’d be facing that it wasn’t their fault and he wanted them to continue their career.
@KingCordster
@KingCordster 2 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, he was set to retire in 07, but due to health complications from Kobashi (cancer, and nagging injuries and such), Misawa felt that he had to continue wrestling a full-time schedule. It’s absolutely tragic, I agree. The tag match that he ultimately died in was rumored to have been one of his matches anyway, as he was going to retire sometime later in 2009.

Silver King ended up becoming my uncle's friend in his last years. My uncle was a wrestling promoter for his own promotion and Silver King actually wrestled for him on a few occasions. It's honestly kinda remarkable how many of these resulted from... frankly, very mundane things going wrong. Like, there's one botched power bomb on the list, but besides that, we've got a botched chop oversell, a back suplex, several mostly-coincidental heart attacks and "threw self at second rope awkwardly." And almost all of them had underlying health issues at the time, too.

Great video. Just wanted to add to the snoring point - snoring is essentially your airway being blocked by your soft tissues, and reverberating as air is forced in and out. Some people do it while they sleep (obviously) and it isn't necessarily a concerning thing. But, there are several situations where snoring is scary. If someone is knocked out, has collapsed or is difficult to rouse, and they're snoring, their brain isn't working effectively in telling their muscles to stay tense. An obstructed airway will kill someone quickly. Learning how to perform a few basic maneuvers can save someone's life.

It's been seven years and I still find myself wondering how Ray feels about Perro's death. I imagine something like that has to weigh heavy on peoples minds. I hope Ray doesn't kick himself to much about this. It was a freak accident and all the training and expierence in the world can't discount that.
@SirPunzalot
@SirPunzalot 2 жыл бұрын
According to an interview I saw, Ray isn't that troubled. He said he was initially shocked, but realised that this stuff happens in wrestling - so it doesn't bother him anymore. He hoped that Perro's family could get over the incident and move on, like he had. Of course, he hoped that he wouldn't be involved in something like this again - but if he did, he'd just chalk it up to the whims of the sport and get back to entertaining the crowd (he mentioned being disappointed, in hindsight, that the match didn't have a proper conclusion).

@SirDistic
@SirDistic Жыл бұрын
@@SirPunzalot I understood that he was devestated at first. But obviously once the report came out about how he died he realized that there was nothing anyone could do. It's no different than tripping over a crack on the sidewalk, hitting your head and dying. A freak accident that can happen to anyone. That doesn't lessen the fact that Rey does have to live with it in his memory for life. But wrestling is a dangerous sport no matter many precautions they take.

I'm not going to use the term "honorable mention" here, but Alberto Torres and Ray Gunkel were keyfabe-killed by Ox Baker's Heart Punch. PS- On the topic of Plum Mariko, they held a memorial show for her headlined by an "handicap" match: Cutie Suzuki and Dynamite Kansai against Mayumi Ozaki (the one to perform the move that caused her brain to bleed). Handicap in quotations because Ozaki brought Mariko's gear to the ring and laid it in the corner of her "team", as if to represent Mariko as her teammate. It's an absolute tough watch, cuz its basically 20 minutes of Ozaki basically geting her ass beat, almost as penance for what happened... heartwrenching

@elc1960
@elc1960 2 жыл бұрын
@@FordPrefict42 To be truthful, it's doubtful he truly ended either man's life. The other wrestler who died after a match with Ox was Ray Gunkel, but his death was likely due more to a gastrointestinal issue similar to the one that took David Von Erich. Allegedly Gunkel overindulged at a local restaurant sometime before his match, because he didn't die until afterwards in the dressing room. After showering, Gunkel was about to towel off and collapsed on the floor. According to authorities, Gunkel was likely dead as soon as he hit the floor. Alberto Torres however died in the ring, and the actual cause of his death was pretty inconclusive. But wrestling being what it is, Baker took kayfabe credit for having killed two men, but it's unknown whether he used his heart punch against either man.

Perro Aguayo's death was so unexpected I remember I saw it with my father and we thought it was part of the show but when we saw Konnan come out and check on him we knew it was real and we were scared since we could tell something was really wrong when he wasn't moving or responding to anything

i still remember a huge part of the wrestling community putting blame on Mysterio, labling him a murderer. many different stories came out however saying that it wasn’t Mysterio that did it. Most of said stories was that Aguayo had an underlining and speculated ignored/hidden heart condition and that was what did him in, nothing involving Mysterio

It annoys me that people say wrestling is fake. If it’s so fake then try explain these deaths that happen in the ring and try explain other injuries including the quadricep injury triple h suffered twice. that happen in the ring. I think people who say it’s fake have clearly never seen a single wrestling match. Injuries are hard to fake those type of injuries

Ox Baker reportedly killed Ray Gunkel in 1971 and Alberto Torres in 1972 with his heart punch finisher . Both Gunkel and Torres had heart problems before their respective matches that could've led to their deaths thus Baker was cleared of any wrongdoing and actually worked the deaths into his promos .

Having watched a video of that Rey vs Perro match I can honestly say that if the dropkick didn't kill Perro then Konnan's rough handling of his unconscious/dead body would've done it.

It wasn't just the Dropkick. Just prior to that, Rey sent Aguayo out of the ring with a headscissors takedown (which was an apparent miscommunication as Aguayo was supposed to fall onto the 2nd rope for the 619), and unfortunately, Aguayo's neck hit the ring apron, which likely caused the initial fracture of his cervical vertebrae. When he rolled back to the ring inmediately after, he was moving slower as if he was on auto-pilot, and as soon as Mysterio dropkicked him in the shoulder and propeled him into the ropes, his neck snapped as he had 3 broken vertebrae (C1, C2 and C3). He died pretty much instantly, since the 3 fractured vertebrae were the ones that attach the skull to the spine, which made him a quadruplegic and led to cardiac arrest since he couldn't breathe on his own anymore. The same thing happened to Misawa, although the wear and tear after years of taking high-angle bumps had really damaged Misawa's spine. It was that one more high-angle belly to back suplex that caused Misawa's neck to snap at the base of the skull (he snapped the C1 and C2), and it led to cardiac arrest.

Yeah I remember seeing a video when the news first came out. It's pretty clear Perro was at least unconscious, if not dead before he ever hit the second rope

I've never understood why, when these men and women are taking such risks in shows, especially the larger ones, why there isn't an ambulance and paramedics in the building as a precaution because as is proved here, time has been the enemy of some of these wrestlers. Hang the costs of having these provisions on standby, there's enough profits to pay for it, far cheaper than the immesurable price of a life.

If Plum Mariko required brain surgery, she likely had either an epidural or subdural hematoma (collection of blood on the top of the brain). This often has an associated overlying skull fracture. An abscess is an infection of the brain. An autopsy isn't necessarily required in the light of surgery since the cause of death is readily apparent. Prior concussions don't predispose one to this type of injury, but to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (still a darn good reason to not wrestle though).
