It wasn’t quite the first episode; it was _The Aztecs_ (1964), the show’s sixth story. The main thing that bugs me about that scene (even now!) is that they’re clearly watching the second episode of the story (as the cliffhanger reprise is the first thing we see after the titles), yet Sister Monica Joan is discussing the events of the previous episode as if they only just happened a few minutes ago.

John Byrne kept slipping in references to the Doctor in Marvel since he worked on Power Man & Iron Fist. They meet an “odd fellow” whose shop disappears at the end of the story. Later, in F4, Reed Richards drops the occasional reference, and in one issue did while noting he knew a young woman’s grandfather, “Prof. Jones” while they were at a dig on Moon/Mars-? His spin off from X-Men, Alpha Flight’s first arch nemesis was “The Master of the World”, a Cro-Magnon man elevated to a high intellect cyborg by a crashed spaceship. The Dalek's appearance in the Loony Tunes movie almost led to the Daleks not returning to Doctor Who in the revied show. The estate of Terry Nation, who owned the copy right to the Daleks were not happy with the Daleks appearing in the movie without their permission.

The issue with the Daleks is that although the Terry Nation estate owns the rights to the Dalek name and their characterization, the BBC owns the rights to the look of the Daleks, so as long as they aren't called Daleks, the BBC can license them out, like in the Lego Batman movie, where they're called "British robots".

Not contesting that Who may have been the first to use the phrasing "reverse the polarity", but since then has been utilized so prolifically in all forms of sci-fi (especially Star Trek) that it's just a trope of the genre as a whole now rather than a direct reference.

Doesn't lessen the Doctor Who influence by being successful. The references in ST:TNG were often proven to be intentional (and the Doctor's actors were actually listed on a screen in one episode), and many US sci-fi writers have admitted to watching Doctor Who.
@CaptainSouthbird2 жыл бұрын
It's worth nothing that "reversing polarity" has also actual electrical meaning with nothing to do with sci-fi. Electrical devices with "polarity", i.e. positive and negative electrical inputs, supplied the opposite way is reverse polarity. I never saw Cars 2 and I'm just taking this at face value, but what that scene appears to be is that the mechanism about to crush the cars is being driven by a DC motor, which will turn the opposite direction if you in fact reverse its polarity. Unless there was more to that dialog (e.g. "... of the neutron flow"), I'm willing to bet that wasn't actually a reference to Doctor Who or sci-fi at all. Literally electrically speaking reversing the polarity in the real world meaning of that term.

There is no doubt on the "if". Peter has said so numerous times, and put money where his mouth is when buying old Doctor Who props. Whether they did directly influence the Urak-Hai is another matter, but I will concede there are definite simlarities.

Given that the Uruk-Hai are based on the Isengard Orcs (which were said to be more intelligent, able to communicate properly/effectively, and potentially were the result of humans and orcs breeding) it's more likely that it's the other way around - Ogrons being inspired by Isengard Orcs. Although the fact that the name blatantly suggests that Ogrons are some kind of *Ogre* it's probably just a case of 'great minds.'

In one issue of Marvel UK's Transformer comic there is a Decepticon called Octus who transforms into a Dalek. And 1986's The Transformers the Movie is the best Transformers film. Plus more Marvel references are a organisation called W.H.O. aka the Weird Happenings Organisation which is a British Military organisation set up by the twins Alistaire and Alysande Stuart named for Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

We rewatched Mel Brook's Spaceballs over the panini times and saw references to doctor who that I didn't understand when I was younger.

Being all wibbly-wobbly and timey-wimey it is inevitable that the Doctor is gonna be used as pop culture references in other features. Cheers....

Craig of the Creek there is a scene with Craig's brother in his room talking about a creek council if I remember right. But on his brother's headboard we see a small Tardis on display. I think there might also be a Doctor Who reference in Steven Universe other than the Gems being able to regenerate.

The first time I watched Encanto I made that reference before the character in the background had said it. Lol

My little niece is obsessed with Encanto, and the first time we watched it, my responded to that line with "como la TARDIS!" Mind you, my mom is not a geek, but I guess she has picked up enough geek cred from all the scifi my brother and I watch lol

Carry On Screaming has a Doctor Who reference. It wouldn't mean anything, except John Pertwee was in the movie.

Fun fact: Peter Jackson and Ian Mcelan also stared in ‘The 5ish Doctors’. Also WHY HASNT ANYONE GOT HIM TO MAKE AN EPISODE YET! Strike while he’s still up for it!

2:03 not technically true, they aren't the actual props from the Dalek movies... the Originals were made by the same company commissioned to make the TV ones, Shawcraft in around 1964/1965, and they actually appeared in the 1965 serial "The Chase" with William Hartnell (which had the biggest names to appear in Who, The Beatles). These ones for "Back in Action" were fan made (note the 1967-onwards pupils on the eyes), the gold one returned to the silver screen to appear in "Ted 2" and had a scrap with the robot from "Lost In Space" during the Comic Con fight started by Sam Jones. Also I DO believe there is very little evidence to support Steve Martin being a Whovian... I think it was more he wanted "Old School Sci-Fi Movies" and he was ill informed of the Daleks being owned by Terry Nation's estate (as he assumed they were owned by Studio Canal based on what what little knowledge he had of the Cushing movies, and his lack of foresight on the Doctor Who serials with William Hartnell )

Sylvester McCoy's Doctor appeared in the Marvel, Deaths Head comics that were a spinoff of the Transformer comics. It was when Deaths Heas was traveling between universes. It placed Doctor Who into the 1980s Marvel multiverse, which includes Transformers, G.I. Joe, Spiderman and more.
