Richard Jewell didn't deserve to go through any of that, but he stood up for himself and called out both the media and FBI about how wrong they were.

What about Stella Liebeck? The victim of the McDonald's Hot Coffee Lawsuit. She had suffered third degree burn injuries from spilling McDonald's coffee on herself by accident but McDonald's turned her into a punchline after she had won the lawsuit against them despite they were in the wrong.

Wasn't her coffee found to be 20 plus degrees hotter then it should have been?!

Stella wasn't the driver and she was wearing pants so she was stuck with scalding clothing leading to the burns on her groin. She only wanted enough money for the hospital bills, not to live in luxury. I still hear people who bash her using the "news" story and not the full story.

I think the media needs to be held more accountable for these type of incidents. It's clearly not working as they'll continue looking for their next victim. I think we should increase fines for doing this, and have some taxes that they have to pay for each life they ruin!

@thedevilsrockstxr2309 yes, but the media has more rights when it comes to libel and slander than the everyday citizen. They are literally held to a lower standard. I agree on no fines or jail time, but they should be just as accountable as every US citizen

Lindy (and Michael) Chamberlain? It wasn't just that the system got it wrong - their trial by media (especially Lindy's) using things like their faith (Seventh Day Adventism) and Lindy's reported post-partum depression against them as if these things made someone a likely murderer, were absolutely appalling. A dark and prolonged time in the Australian press.

I'd also add Monica Lewinsky. She was the butt of jokes for years after Clinton, meanwhile Clinton didn't get as nearly as much from the media as Monica did. She was getting jokes a decade or two after. Yeah she got it on with the president, but she didn't deserve the type of media scrutiny that lasted for years and years
@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494 Жыл бұрын
She was one of the first people I thought of when the title popped up. She was young, she was hounded, she was reduced to nothing but sordid jokes and her voice was taken away. Shame on the Clintons too for the way they absolutely let her get thrown to the wolves.

This is why many states in the US at least have enacted laws to not release photos of those arrested or listed as a person of interest until/unless found guilty in a court of law. My own state (Utah) enacted this same law about 3 years ago. The only time photos can be released is once found guilty OR in extreme circumstances (such as FBI looking for someone for really good reasons or if they have good reason to suspect one has abducted a child and they are looking to find the kid ASAP sort of situation).

@krizwatcher Жыл бұрын
There is a little term in media that all journalists are (or must be) taught to adhere to in order to avoid foul-ups like these. It is known as "fact-checking," i.e. making 100% sure that the information you have for your story is true and accurate BEFORE broadcast or publication, and it is done specifically to avoid lawsuits that come from these kinds of situations, more so because sometimes even the sources that reporters rely on for their stories can get crucial things wrong. Journalistic integrity requires it, and fair treatment to all involved parties in news stories demands it. Furthermore, if fact-checking is not done and wrong information is carried, then as demonstrated by this video, the trustworthiness of the media house in question will be seriously called into question as a result.
