While I didn't like the Patriots dynasty any more than anyone else did, the cold fact of the matter was they really were the best team in football and deserved to be in the Bowl. The only way you are guaranteed to see different teams in the SB is to mandate 1-year contracts for everybody and each team gets blown up every year.

Something that wasn't mentioned about the '94-95 Superbowl matchup that we were deprived of is that both the 49ers and Steelers would have been playing for their fifth Superbowl. Not only that, but Joe Montana originally wanted to be traded to the Steelers (he grew up in Pittsburgh) but the Steelers were happy with Neil O'Donnell so they said 'no.' Imagine an alternate reality where the Steelers said, 'yes,' Joe Montana goes back home to play for his childhood team and faces San Fran in the Superbowl.

The "first to five super bowl wins" aspect wouldve been the only thing that made a PIT-SF Super Bowl XXIX interesting. The Super Bowl everyone really was wishing for was actually two weeks earlier: the NFC Championship. All the sports pundits were saying DAL-SF was the "real" Super Bowl. The Niners wouldve still torched the Steelers the same as they did the Chargers. It just sucks the game we got couldnt have been a closer score into the 2nd half; if it had, the highest scoring Super Bowl ever wouldnt have been nearly so unengaging. The 26 points the Chargers scored wouldve won in one third (19) of all Super Bowls, and is currently the 7th highest losing score in a Super Bowl ever.

Super Bowl XII should've been the Dallas Cowboys vs. the defending champion Oakland Raiders. Horrible blown fumble call on the goal line helped the Broncos win the '77 AFC champ game. The Cowboys and Raiders, despite their dominance in the 70's never met in the "Big Game", and it would've been great to see them go head to head. I am older and I notice. Not a lot of people are talking about 1985. I was around for that and I can tell you, the whole nation wanted the Miami Dolphins versus the Chicago Bears. How the Patriots made the SB still perplexes me, but The only team with any shot against the bears that year was Miami. I know the bears fans wanted the rematch to get revenge as well. This one doesn't get talked about as much just because of how far back it is, But after watching this whole list and being a huge NFL fan, I would say other than 1998, this was easily #2 on the list if you asked everyone watching football at the time.

The Raiders and Cowboys were the NFL's two biggest marquee teams in the '70s. Three times both teams were a game away from facing each other in the Super Bowl, and all three times at least one team lost. Even worse, the only Cowboys-Raiders game of that entire decade was a completely meaningless season finale during the one time in an 18 YEAR STRETCH the Cowboys missed the playoffs (they were eliminated before the game). It also was a game away from happening in '80 as well. IMO this is the ultimate Super Bowl what if.

I would change the 2003 SB Raiders vs Buccaneers to the previous year, instead of Rams vs Patriots. It shouldve been Rams vs Raiders. This was the infamous "Tuck Rule" that saw the Patriots move on. It wouldve been awesome to see a shootout between Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Tory Holt vs Rich Gannon, Tim Brown, Jerry Rice. And Jon Gruden to the SB with the Raiders means he mightve stayed longer with the Raiders instead of being traded to Tamp Bay.

Phillip rivers played through a torn ACL, and had he not been injured maybe his play would’ve been way better and an upset coulda happened. What? The Pats weren’t even in the AFC Title Game that year. It was the Jets. Now NY-GB would’ve been something to see. The Sanchize against Aaron Rodgers. Loads of people would be rooting for the Jets. Ironic that Rodgers is with Gang Green now after being a spoiled brat in Wisconsin and he was knocked out four snaps into his Jets career with an Achilles injury. Now I loved seeing that as a Vikings fan, but as a defensive-minded fan, it reminded me of when Anthony Barr took out Rodgers with a broken collarbone in 2017. The very next off-season, the NFL approves all of these new “protections” for QBs right when Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and the next generation of young QBs are about to make their rise. Now doesn’t that seem a bit suspicious? The NFL is so biased towards QBs that they will do anything to protect them, even if it discriminates against the defense. Very symbolic of the two-tiered justice system we have in this country. The offense gets protected, the defense never gets the benefit of the doubt. Look at other sports and tell me if I’m wrong, cuz I know I’m not. The Pats were beaten by the Jets in the AFC playoffs that year and I can remember a Jets player saying at the end of his interview on the field in Foxboro “Can’t wait!” Well, that’s a jinxing comment. Can’t wait for what? To get your asses beat by Pittsburgh and go on a decade and a half long playoff drought? Hahaha. 😂.

If it wasn’t for the Browns, this would be true. I think we were deprived of the best shot we’ve ever had of Browns-Lions in the “one of them is actually gonna win it” Super Bowl. Sad too bc one of those teams got blown out in the wild card round, but given both teams have gone 0-16 in the last 15yrs and are the longest tenured teams without a SB appearance it would’ve been one for the ages. Honorable mention to the formerly Chicago based Cardinals who currently have the longest championship drought in North American sports, but aren’t the “Cubs” bc they at least played in a Super Bowl(and nearly won it).

Super Bowl 12. It would've been great to see Stabler's Raiders vs Staubach's Cowboys. The Raiders got robbed in the AFC Championship vs the Broncos. The Broncos then got wallopped by the Cowboys 27-10 in the Super Bowl. It should've been Madden vs Landry, the doomsday defense vs the Raiders vaunted offensive line, the Cowboys recievers vs that NASTY Raiders secondary. That would've been an all time classic.
