I haven't really done much drawing and very little painting, but when I watch someone paint, it amazes me how they can get instant water just by bringing the color of the trees, for instance, straight down for reflection and then just softly go across the canvas with the brush!

My biggest takeaway from this is to make the water and sky lighter the farther it is away. This is a great piece, by the way, Shana. I think painting reflections is such an important part of portraying clean still water, even if that just means you're taking the colors of things around the water in your piece and bringing them into the water.

I learned that the hard way! I built a set of Polychromos, to draw landscapes and when I made the first one, I was SO exited and disapointed in the same time, from the huge amount of time it takes. I literally draw each blade of grass, using thre different Greens. Only that, took me like 2 days,but in the end, it looked like real grass!! I don't recomend that method though, because it takes forever! There are other methoids, that make it look as good if not better,that also take much less time!

Are you using a variety of pencil types? Just wondered what brand you are using. Yes the moisture and naturally occurring atmospheric impurities are in the air and the farther away you look, the thicker that visible layer becomes, which is why things fade & fuzz out. Its why the farther away a guy goes wearing a bright white shirt, the darker the shirt gets. If he is wearing black pants that hue actually gets lighter the farther away it goes. Beautiful work!

One tip that has helped me in my artwork is when I use both wc and colored pencils and I love to get rid of the glare from the colored pencils I use the Caran ‘de ache waterbrush that has the fiber end on it. The odorless mineral spirits are double locked in the barrel of the syringe so it doesn’t leak in my bag or anywhere. I generally use very little in my waterbrush to rid the glare from the wax but it also blends. Since colored pencils are oil paint in a pencil using both mediums is so much fun and I love using the pencils to show the sun glare off another object which is hard to do in wc but not in oils. Anyways take my tip and run with it. I do full compositions and also blend wc with pastels, charcoal but started in watercolor, oils and acrylics. Landscapes are so much fun and have a blast. The waterbrush does not make any mess and it self cleans on a tissue. Using brushes is noxious and this stays capped. Best wishes 😊
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay Жыл бұрын
That's how I use my odorless minerals spirits, too! I always put them in a waterbrush so I don't have them in an open container while working. Anytime you see me using a waterbrush in this video, I'm using OMS , and the times I'm using a regular brush, I am using water, haha! I have been doing it that way for years!

@@CautionArtistatPlay It definitely is the healthy way to go. I don’t know how long the CD water brush has been out but it’s been around 8 yrs if me saying goodbye to the dizzy fumes. Best wishes. It would be nice that there was a way for artists to share with each other creativity. I mainly do nature, landscapes, compositions, florals, animals and portraits. It seems like there are so many tutorials on things that many have needed to go to the next level that it would be lovely to see that. I couldn’t do that because I teach and my health is bad but many seem to appreciate it. And it’s clean fun these days. Take care, I will check you out again soon. Beautiful work!

It definitely is much healthier, I have been doing it that way, probably since shortly after I started with CP in 2014. I recently have decided to try and make the switch to Zest-it or Holbein Meltz as healthier alternatives and will be using them in a waterbrush, too. It is nice to be in touch with other artists and see different ways of doing things. That's why I love KZbin so much! Thank you so much for watching and for the chat!

This is insane If you told me the water was a photo I'd believe you It's awesome how we see all this in nature every time we look at it but I think as an artist you can appreciate it more. Any time I look at a distant mountain I think "wow that's beautiful" but never think about how it takes on the color of the sky and there's no detail and all that. Obviously my eyes see it, but my brain doesn't care to take notice. I want to start drawing, and I dont know that this is a beginner's tutorial (or at least your artwork isn't) but I hope to start soon I know it's hard to quantify, but can you say how much is natural talent and how much is learned? Idk if that question even makes sense
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 5 ай бұрын
Thank you so much!! I started drawing when I was really little, I always had a natural inclination for it, and started teaching myself when I was really young. And It has been a lifetime of hard work, observation, and learning for me. So, in a nutshell, it starts with passion and then takes commitment and the openness to learning new things. If you have the desire to draw, then you can absolutely learn to do so! It may not happen overnight. It takes a lot of patience, but art can be learned! I hope this helps! 💖

@@CautionArtistatPlay I'm 32 and trying to get into new things. My life is stale and I'm tired of the couch. I bought a colored pencils and pad set for $13 that will be here tomorrow, I did a little bit of sketching in just pencil and I think I can do it. I don't really know how to make things look good in one color like a pencil so I'm hoping the colored pencils will be more fun and keep me going
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 5 ай бұрын
@vidowatcher91, we all have to start somewhere! Starting with regular pencil is good because it will get you used to looking at your values (how light or dark something is) and will give you a feel for mark making. A few things to keep in mind: not all colored pencils and paper are built the same. Some of the less expensive pencils tend to be less saturated and overly waxy, which can be hard when trying to build up to the color you are going for. Paper is also really important. You want something that has enough tooth so you can build layers, but not something too rough, because then you will be fighting the texture of the paper. So, keep that in mind when you start working in color. If you are not getting the saturation or coverage you are looming for, it might be the pencils or paper. Colored pencil is also a layering process and can take a lot of patience, but it's a very versatile medium once you get the hang of it!
@vidowatcher91

@@CautionArtistatPlay ok this is hard!🤣 I tried for the first time tonight it felt like it would have taken me 3 hours to get the sky the way I wanted and I feel like I got no detail in ANYTHING! My drawing looks the same as it did when I was in 3rd grade, but I probably haven't tried since then so I guess that makes sense🤣 I didn't even want to finish it, I'll try again tomorrow, not sure if a continuation of the first drawing or starting over. As bad as it looks it was still relaxing and felt good to try creating something instead of buying everything. Light, distance, proportion, patience, and detail are the hardest part so far. So that's pretty much everything
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 5 ай бұрын
@vidowatcher91, LOL! There's a good chance that it would have taken at least 3 hours for the sky, colored pencil is a slow medium! Even for some experienced artists, it could take that long to lay the sky in! I would keep going on the same piece instead of starting over, and just see how far you can take it!

This is very informative video and thanks for creating this and sharing. I would like to know for the right side of the trees there is a layer of water and then after a gap you have shown reflection. Any specific reason why reflection is not shown immediately as soon as water starts to show up below the trees.
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that gap represents really fine surface ripples in the water that, from far away, take on a light version of the color of the sky and contain very little detail. The ripples, likely caused by a slight breeze brushing the surface of the water, interrupt that part of the reflection. Then where the water becomes calmer again, the reflection is allowed to continue.

You are experienced and excellent with watercolor/Inktense pencils, too. When and why would you pick color pencils with OMS vs watercolor/Inktense pencils? Brighter colors because of the oil/wax based pigment medium? A decent color pencil artwork especially on sanded paper looking a bit like an oil painting?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay Жыл бұрын
Yeah, basically. I also enjoy the process with each medium, too. Sometimes, I am just in the mood to work with regular colored pencil. I feel like I have a bit more control with them for certain subjects. They also tend to be a bit more lightfast. A lot of watercolor pencils haven't been tested for lightfastness after they have been wet down, so it's hard to know how stable they will be over time.

WONDERFUL! Are you using a waterbrush to apply OMS? Odorless spirits still give off vapors, so does the brush seal enough to prevent vapors when not actively in use?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 2 ай бұрын
Yes! I kept the cap on when it wasn't in use and didn't experience any leaking. I found it to be much better than working from an open container. It's so much more contained, even with its lid off, then it is when you are opening and closing a larger container of it between use. That being said, this an older video of mine, and I have since switched to Zest-it pencil blend and Holbein Meltz for blending colored pencil, because I am not a fan of the harmful vapors OMS gives off, even though I was always careful with it.

What pencil did you use to add white ripples on dark water? Hard to add lighter colors on top of dark colors with colored pencil?
@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay Жыл бұрын
My favorite white pencil to use is the Derwent Lightfast Chinese White. It's really opaque and goes over things well. Holbeins soft white pencil is fantastic as well. If those don't do the trick, then I recommend using the Brush and Pencil Touch Up Texture and Titanium White powder mixed together. It can be painted on and its archival because it is made to be used with colored pencil, unlike gel pen and acrylic markers, which could chip off over time.

@CautionArtistatPlay
@CautionArtistatPlay 10 ай бұрын
Those are far off surface waves that break up the reflection. There was either a very slight breeze that had gone through or possibly a boat that had just gone through before the reference photo was taken. They are far enough away that they lack any detail and just reflect some light.

Hello there, Thanks for watching! I didn't use any one color for the sky, or trees, or water. Each of these components required multiple colors to complete. It has been so long since I created this, and I used so many brands of colored pencils that I don't remember which specific colors were used in this piece. I am not typically someone who pays close attention to color name to begin with, I just go by sight. My best guess for the sky is a lot of cobalt blues, maybe some light phthalo blues, and light turquoise or cyan. And then darker variations of those for the water, with maybe some ultramarine. There were a lot of dark greens for the trees. I also used a lot of the Derwent Drawing Chinese White throughout the piece. I can't really remember which brand of pencil I used where. But I think you mentioned in another comment that you use Polychromos, and there should be colors in that line that come close to the colors I just described. I hope this helps!

It handles the watercolor pencils pretty well too. I have it, along with the other supplies linked in the description if you are interested in seeing what I used! Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed my video!

That would be cool, there are times when I try to find unique places to sign my work, all depends on the piece and my mood at the time lol

what if I'm using paper, does the paper will wet wet if I'm gonna use watercolor?

You'll want to use a good heavy weight paper, I'm using Stonehenge here and it works great, but hot pressed watercolor paper would probably be the best because it's made to be used with water but it's still smooth enough to use pencil on.

I used watercolor pencils with water for a few of the under layers, and regular colored pencil with odorless mineral spirits for top layers.

wow, this is damn beautiful, i am just starting to do color drawings, can i get this effect just using color pencils and blending stumps without using water color ?
@CautionArtistatPlay

Thank you! Yes you can, you just need a lot of layers of colored pencil. Infact, the majority of this drawing is regular colored pencil, though I sometimes blended with a solvent called odorless mineral spirits. Many people like to use a solvent to blend their colored pencils to help speed up the time,, but if you layer the pencils enough you don't need solvents. Colored pencils are amazingly versatile, once you get the hang of layering them.

With acrylics it helps if you spray your surface evenly with water so it's damp before you add your paints. Thin your paint a bit with water or slow drying medium and work quickly.
