The only two things I can think to add on or expand on in your tips is to research what animals you’re legally allowed to accept into your rescue based on federal and state laws. Sometimes people will take in native reptiles and not realize it’s prohibited, and unless the rescue has permits to take that native wildlife they may not be allowed to. The another thing is for the adoption form you’ll need to decide on what your return policy is. Sometimes homes don’t work out and people can get ashamed, and instead of bringing the animal back, they may release the animal or rehome to someone not suitable. With the cat rescue I volunteer with, all animals are supposed to go back to us. All our cats are also microchipped, and we register the chips for the owners, with both the new owners and our info. That way if the animal gets lost or abandoned, that increases the chance of us getting the animal back.

Very good point!

Also check permit requirements for venomous reptiles, poisonous amphibians, and crocodilians, if you plan on accepting them. And know who to call in your local Wildlife Resources in case someone dumps one on your doorstep.

I seriously appreciate you saying that you're part of the problem. So many breeders are blind to the fact that they're actually contributing to over run rescues either directly or indirectly that they simply shrug it off as not being their problem. I already love you and your channel, but you've seriously gone further up in my support of you because you admit what can be considered a fault by some, but you're also trying to combat it by rescuing animals. I highly recommend Virkon for a disinfectant. I use it in my quarantine horse barn. Like the Buckeye, it doesn't need to be rinsed, and it's available online and at most farm/feed stores. *Edited to add that it comes as a powder or tablet, mixes up to a pink solution, and actually starts to change colour back to clear as it loses strength, so you know when to mix up a new batch.

Videos like this encourage me when I get frustrated over having to care for my mentally ill brother's guinea pigs. If you’re not up for taking on the full responsibility of running a rescue, its worth checking around your area to see if you can be of use. I know a rescue near me that used to only take cats & dogs now also takes rabbits as well as small lizards up to bearded dragon size because they were approached by groups of volunteers willing to do the fundraising & the fostering & help find vets willing to provide services. I’m happy their adoption coordinator was on board to expand her knowledge.

Something my mom's always done, but is a bit more work (vet clinic, not rescue, but still) is have 2 or 3 disinfectants that get switched out depending on the day of the week, so any germs that do form a resistance to one cleaner immediately get hit with a different one.
@Baysha100014 сағат бұрын
Germs can't develop resistance to disinfectants. Disinfectants work by "blunt force" - dissolving cell membranes, denaturing proteins etc. That is not something that bacteria and viruses can work around (just like they can't develop resistance to a flamethrower). Antibiotics are very different in that regard, they work by disrupting a specific metabolic pathway.
@cutecats532Сағат бұрын
@@Baysha1000selective pressures drive evolution. All it takes is a lucky mutation and some survivors. Some things I'm reading are that it can happen if the active ingredients in the cleaners aren't strong enough or mishandled. So maybe swapping the disinfectants out helps if there's some human error.

"No Kill" is a term thrown around alot for animal shelters, and yes, i want to save as many as possible, but sometimes the animal is suffering or simply is not safe to be out in the general public. Euthanasia is not always a bad thing. Great job! Having clearly defined expectations for surrender as well as clear defined boundaries ( what we take and what we don't take) has been the most helpful. Also having limits has helped a lot ( like we have room for 30 snakes, 12 bearded etc ...) I've seen rescues get overwhelmed rapidly and then care guidelines plummet from taking in more than they can handle. Thanks again guys!

Connecting with other rescues and animal shelters to let them know what you’ll accept and adopt out helps too. When i worked at the local shelter we had a filing cabinet by species so we could contact them when there was a surrender they’d take or if someone is looking for specific species to adopt we could pass that info along. And setting up with farmers markets that allow it.

"rescueing" vs "hoarding" (that one could easily go wrong, be careful). An episode about 'can I responsibly own a reptile'? and a follow-on about how to look after a reptile. Breeding reptiles: how to avoid breeding a 'puppy farm'. Responsible decisions about choosing a breeder reptile. Responsible decisions about what to do if you get too many healthy births. Responsible decisions about preventative vet care. I think you get the gist.

@MtnNerd17 сағат бұрын
As someone who does cat rescue, I'll add a couple general things: 1. Always charge money. This is not to be greedy but because it filters out irresponsible owners. 2. Know yourself and take caution. Rescues can become hoarding situations really easily, as well meaning people often take in too many animals or have difficulty letting go of animals.
@lfloyd403418 сағат бұрын
Have you considered doing something like periodic shoutouts/fundraising assistance in support of smaller rescues across the country that could be benefit greatly from the exposure? You could maybe have an application process with a specific set of criteria for vetting any rescue that is interested in being featured. I don't run a rescue, but I volunteer for a large one that had to stop accepting new surrenders for several months in order to build their funds back up after accepting 3 major neglect/hoarding cases with dozens of animals needing vet care. Support from you guys could change the world for some of the small rescues out there.
@angelitabecerra10 сағат бұрын
That would be awesome. Though a word of caution; such would get said smaller rescues funding, yes, but also likely overwhelm them with rescues they cannot handle. Which could potentially lead to them shutting down (how most rescues shut down). So this would have to be *very* carefully planned and executed with every contingency thought of. I really love the idea though
@lfloyd40345 сағат бұрын
@@angelitabecerra True - the rescue that's interested in being featured would need to already have a solid procedure in place for determining how many surrenders it could handle at any given time, based on space, caging, equipment, manpower, possible veterinary costs, etc. The rescue where I volunteer regularly has a waitlist that is months long for owner surrenders, but they always stay open to animals brought in by law enforcement or animal control. Unfortunately, those are usually the animals that require the most vet care, so it gets super expensive. They are very respected in our state and in the larger reptile community because they refuse to cut corners or lower their standards of care just to take in a larger volume of animals, which unfortunately seems to be the downfall of many rescues.

Something you didn't quite mention with illnesses is what's called masking. An animal may have 2 or more conditions, and one masks the other. For example, a reptile may have arthritis in it's limbs, AND a mild case of Metabolic bone disease. Once the MBD clears up, only THEN is the inflammation from arthritis found.

In terms of funding a rescue, if you're UK based it's probably a good idea to register as a charity. I don't know if it works the same in the US, but you get quite a lot of tax benefits as a registered charity, and you can get tax free funds and donations from other trusts as well. It's probably a good idea to have another source of income as well, although I imagine the rescue will take up a lot of time. People familiar with the UK will know a Charity shop when they see one 😂 Probably not as important as making sure you have a good vet on call, but useful to know if you want to do it long term. If you are a non-profit, I would also apply for grants rather than loans unless you know that you can pay the loan back.
@TehBuggy13 сағат бұрын
@@HeidiSholl Not sure about the US, but where I live there are a bunch of restrictions on charities about how they can earn money, if they’re allowed to have paid employees or volunteers, other businesses they can own, etc. So that’s something to keep in mind. But definitely worth looking into and seeing if it can help! 💜

Crazy to me how many people keep reptiles where you guys live. A rescue by my takes in any species of animal and there are always very few reptiles. There’s one official reptile rescue near me and it’s like five hours away and usually has no more than maybe 25 reptiles at one time

You guys are amazing! I have a local reptile store in my area that also has a rescue program, I purchase all my supplies from them to help them, they are amazing as well, if you ever find your way to Redding CA, please stop into Redding reptile, tell them Elise womack sent you 😁
