Hey guys, great vid, love the tips! They really helped a lot. My fiance is a snowboard instructor and saw what you guys were doing and thought that everything was great besides one thing and maybe this will help you and everyone else who is trying to dial in their toe turns. When doing toe turns and on the toe edge, always make sure your hips come forward like you are sticking your waist out in front of you in order to get your hips (center of weight) over the toe edge, then sink your knees down to the snow, trying to touch your knees to your toes. This is the one thing that seems to be missing here and once you both implement this technique you will find your toe edge to become easier and less effort. Hope you have a good day and thank you for sharing these tips with us. Happy riding! :)

I’m a snowboard instructor as well, of 4 years and this is one of the best toe side tips I could ever give someone. Relax your ankles, push your shins into the fronts of your boots, and let the tongue of your boot support your weight, like your trying to touch your shin to the top of your foot. Great tip

I went out yesterday. For basically the second time ever at Marmot Basin. And carving all of a sudden made sense by doing one simple thing. Steering with my eyes. Being a beginner I always found myself looking down in front of me, I now lifted my head up and exaggerated looking where I wanted too go. Holding my arms out too my side a little bit and even pointing my lead hand in the direction I wanted too go, kind of steering with my shoulders as well. Seeing many of your tips here I see that once I kept my head up and looked where I wanted too go, almost everything else here came naturally. In 1 day I went from never riding toe edge too being able too bring the board too a powerful stop on my toes just by looking far uphill. It all came naturally. So impressed.

It’s the transition from heel to toe carving at moderate to high speeds that freaks me out. I’m scared of catching my back edge. How do I shift my weight from heel to toe properly to feel more confident in that maneuver so that I don’t catch an edge and can control my speed and high speeds? And that rocking back and forth move, you make it look easy but I find it very difficult.
@rsmith26586 жыл бұрын
Matt Khoury practice over emphasizing getting low, and riding the board flat in a straight line on a small hill, progressively adding speed. Should make the transition easy once you are used to that motion.
@Unknown-zi2jy6 жыл бұрын
Matt Khoury just trust your snowboard and don’t be afraid to dig in that curve. If u ride on the edge you will see that u have much more control. And also try not throw your shoulders around as you switch. Turn your whole body with the snowboard.

I kind of think about feeling like I’m pivoting on my back foot toes. I’m like 10 months late but hope that helps.
@keniaamaya89606 жыл бұрын
Always think about transferring your hips over from one edge to the other when making the transition. Once your board is pointed straight downhill, you can go to any edge you desire. Once one edge is more uphill than the other, then you want to have your hips over that edge and bending into that edge. Hips out in front of you on your toe edge, curving your back, hips behind you in squatting chair position when on heel edge. this transfer of hips is everything when placing your weight to the right area. Also very important is being on front foot for beginning of turn and slowly transferring to back foot throughout the turn. Then back to front foot to initiate the next turn. Keep these two things in mind and your snowboarding will progress quickly. This is everything!

wile turning try to do a small jump, you dont have to lift up the board, the motion of jumping will bring up the board just a bit up the snow, and that will prevent your edge from getting cough in the snow. hope it helps! ps...Im not good explaining!

Great tips guys, here's another, when making big, long arcs, on heel side turns you can move your weight forward over your front foot to dig your edge in and straighten up as you transition to the toe side arc then moving your weight over your back foot. So remember, its heel side/weight over front foot and toe side/weight over back foot. Try it and you will feel the power in your transitions.

“When I saw myself carving for the first time, it was horrible”. Thank you, THANK you! 😸 I just did that today, saw myself on cam. I’m rookie so, ok. But OMG. There are areas of improvement, for sure. Thanks for a great video!!
@sstalder58 жыл бұрын
Good video with some good points and nice slow progression, but there are a few things that bother me. Both of you guys favor your back foot riding, which is why your edges are sliding out, not because they aren't sharp enough. Try adding slightly more pressure onto your front foot, especially when initiating your turns, for better edging. Another thing is when you guys ride toe edge (Chris more than Kev), you want to extend your hips forward rather than keeping them back in a seated position. This adds more linear pressure and a higher edge angle to your toe edge for better carving. Also, the "steering with your knees" part is right and wrong. The body movements are more or less correct, but your feet are what's actually doing the steering. Those movements change the torsional flex of the board, which is initiating your turns. I feel like beginners will get the wrong idea steering with their knees, and not actually understand what they are trying to accomplish with the movements. And finally, your bonus tip is actually backwards. You want your knees bent in between turns and extended in the middle of your turns. Releasing pressure in the middle of your turns will cause your edge to lose grip, resulting in skidded turns or loss of control. Search for dynamic carving for more info on this. That said, you're putting out a lot of great information for new snowboarders in a free and easy to access format. I'm subbed and looking forward to more new videos!

I finally learned how to carve this season. What was holding me back was my body’s fears. You have to really lean into the heel/toe. You may feel like you might feel like you will fall but you just have to catch your balance while leaning in. I was also scared of going faster. But the thing is you start getting more control and cutting the ice better the faster you go. It’s harder to control slower and thus harder to do heel toe transitions.

Mark Reilly try pointing your board straight down the hill and then try your toe turn, instead of turning right away and forcing that turn.
@jaybyrne45627 жыл бұрын
Im guessing you're probably engaging the edge too much to begin with. Try swapping edge whilst still traversing then, engage front foot, whilst holding back foot off. As the board turns towards fall line, match your back foot to the front, that should bring the turn round nicely and gradual.
@paytonfalco18116 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem, what I've learned to do is to slightly drag your back foot behind you while leaning forward slightly. I'm goofy so I would drag my back foot to my left, if you were regular drag your right foot behind you while slightly leaning forward.
@Unknown-zi2jy6 жыл бұрын
CoaLove ! Try to not rush the turn, wait a few seconds until your board is pointing straight down the mountain. And also remember to use your whole body, throw your shoulders and hips around as you turn with your feet. I would definitely practice on waiting with the turn tho, that is a common thing that beginners do.

It's important that you learn to steer with the lower part of your legs, this way it's easier to maintain balance while switching from toes to heels and the other way around. Deep knee bend and a relaxed upper body are key for a high speed carve

At the apex of the carve, you should be at your most extended with weight slightly forward from center on less aggressive carving or more weight forward for baller short carves. Moving your center back lengthens the carve arc at lower speeds, but causes your edge to flat too quickly and respond slower going into another turn. Once in that position, you've got nowhere to go but flat on your base & risk catching a feral edge. Shoulders should be as square to the fall line as possible and both hands on the 'handlebars'. Having your hands out in front of you helps to absorb energy created by chattering if you're on crud or ice and the nose isn't getting into the 'ditch' & engaging/holding on to the turn. Knee bending to 'release pressure' is what begins to flat the edge and return to neutral camber. Full knee flexion is in-between turns, going from one edge to the other. That said, knee surgeons like it when you lock your knees on big fast supercarves, but won't give you that knee replacement until much later in life... Don't give them reason to grin, (or your family reason to buy you a drink cup holder for your new walker). And finally, (before I check outta' here & slam a glass of Rum & Metamucil), Don't steer with your knees - steer with body positioning between your shoulders and hips and *assist* with your knees. Your knees are absorbing shock and holding your body mass in place' they're not rudders. Hope this helps dig thinner trenches.

For what is of the stearing of the knee, you can narrow both heel carve and toes carve by stearing foward, but for the heel carve you have to push them as much as possible towards the nose of your board and for the toes carve you have to push them at about a 45° angle from the nose of your board. As a snowboard instructor I would also advise quite early, even before stearing with the knee, to try to lift your toes higer on the back foot when on your heel and the heel higer on your back foot when on your toes, because that will allow you to be a lot more agressive. Flexion and extention would be something I show early too. Then when the one I'm teaching is doing all of this quite well I would start to slowly add my favorite part of it, in each carve you dive foward on your board, then slowly transfer your weight to the back of your board, and if you do it perfectly and exagerate it it jump by itself when you switch from heel to toes or toes to heel (I'm not yet good enough for it to reliably jump by itself when switching from heel to toes, but toes to heels work.).

Good video.... I am with you on all points except for the hand positioning.... if you leave your rear hand behind it can cause you to (what I call) rudder steer, you can actually see your buddy doing it a bit.... both hands forward where you can actually see them in your peripheral vision is better, in my book (I have been snowboarding since before many of you were probably born and instructing for almost as many years, 23 years to be exact, not saying that to boast, just to make the point I am not a hack)... If you do this it forces you body position down the hill as well. I find for myself and those that I have instructed over the years, it really 'fine tunes' your carving... your turns will become a bit cleaner.... yeah riding in a park you may want to modify that a bit but for straight up carving... hands downhill and body facing as downhill as possible.... (the dude that Simon referred to below "Ryan Knapton" agrees with me, in his carving video he says the same... btw.... )

Thanks guys. Do you guys have camber boards for carving? I/m looking into improving my carving and seems that camber is the way to go for stable edge-holding carving? I want to make as big a trench that i can. I only do groomers and I don't do any more side hit jumps, or parks at all and I'm just directional only, but like speed sometimes on a highly predictable/well-known run.

Hi I am trying to practice touching the snow heelside and found it really hard to do. Could you please make a video telling us how to train yourself on the heelside so you can touch the snow with your hands? Thanks

Hated the lift and hated toe side. I mastered the falling leaf on heel side. I remember my husband yelling for me to just go for it. I never ate so much snow when I caught the edge 🤣
