One overlooked tip is that YOU WON'T CATCH AN EDGE ON A FLAT BOX. It's natural to go heelside when turning in the snow, but it'll make you eat it on the box! Just gotta commit to getting that board flat. Hope this helps.

This is a great tip. Just remember the tip is to stay FLAT. Not to go toe heavy and faceplant on the rail.

Joseph Messina i think its because with a rail you can just exit off the side and its curved but with a box its wider and flat so you have to ride it all the way

I tried my first box today in the beginner park at Brighton; just going straight forward. I slipped out heel side and realized two things...1) slower speed and 2) don't lean backwards AT ALL. The second time I tried I nailed it. I really wish I had found this video yesterday! You guys are awesome!

2 weeks ago, I tried a curved box and leaned back and landed on my back, while wearing a backpack. Thought I broke my back. Then I tried a straight box last Saturday and feel the first time, on my back and then tried later on and nailed it. DO NOT LEAN BACKWARDS. lol. God damn my back still hurts.

In the beginning what you were trying to teach him was the "counter rotation" method. When you get on a box when you first start out, you have to turn your upper body in the opposite direction of your lower body, the counter rotation will keep you stable and stop you from slipping out. You can see him clearly doing this at 1:49

Do you have to worry about digging your front edge and face planting? I always thought you needed to be on the back edge so you don't catch the front. We did not have any boardparks in the early 90's so we just built jumps but I am taking my kids riding for the first time this year and want to be able to give the best advice I can.

Actually if youre on your heel edge at all you will slip out onto your butt. I'm learning this trick right now. Your base has to be totally flat on the box. No edge! You won't catch your toe edge. Don't lean back at all . Even weight and flat base.

To be honest, the actual and main problem I faced when I started sliding on a box (next step is sliding a rail) is that you MUST NOT USE your edge, because as soon as you use the edge, even if you use a little of it, your ass or your face is already beating the box. And there is a big difference preparing to slide on the slope, as shown at the beginning of the video, because on a slope you always use edges, at least a little. SO, for me, the most effective excercise I experienced was trying to slide in the slope, basckside or frontside, but trying to not use the edge, so with EXTREMELY FLAT board ot the ground. So, before to augment the difficulty of the excercise, for example increasing speed, be sure to be on a box WITHOUT USING EDGES.

actually with more speed you get more weight forward than onto the rail when falling, so in a way you won't impact the rail as much as if you would if you have slow speed so higher speed can be good, + it gives momentum and smoother feeling

One thing I don't like is when a box is sticky due to not being taken care of. I went to this resort I normally never ride and found their box and hit it with the normal amount of speed, and I stuck right to it and fell forward. So I thought maybe its just me, hit it again same thing, stuck to it and fell, have you ever come across any boxes that just didn't slide right?

So when your board is at 90 degrees, should the board be flat on the box or should you be on your heel edge? Is there any chance of your toe edge catching?

Your board should be flat. If you try to lean on your heel edge, your board will slip out and you'll land on your butt. You'll only catch your toe edge if you lean too far forward, but I find that pretty hard to do.

Im purely a powder boarder… and when it comes park skiing and boardslides on my snowboard and my skateboard i just cant do it… ive broken my shoulder and dislocated it from boardslides and its so hard to overcome no matter what I try… 50/50s are easy but boardslides not so much. Any tips?

I have a ride twinpig. Do you think I have to blunt the edges to be able to do boardslides like this? Or will it be just fine the way it comes stock?

Anyone got tips to get over my fear of boxes? I used to hit them all the time but last season i compound fractured both bones in my forearm on a box and this season i can’t seem to get myself to try one out again. I’m working on my grabs and all that but even watching people hit boxes makes me freak out.
