Beautiful choices, but I just read that ticks hang out on barberry because they are thorny, and the deer won’t eat them. I’d avoid those in spaces where people will be. 🌱🌱🌱

Should you leave leaves in your garden bed filled with perennials and shrubs? What if it is a shade garden with large trees? My landscape team believes you should clean it all up but when they use a strong blower that blows away all the pine needle mulch. It is a large garden and remulching is expensive.

I planted siberian cypress (Microbiota decussata) in full afternoon sun this spring. Because I love them so much and they were a bit expensive, I have been watching them closely, maybe too closely. I have a tiny tiny bit of browning on the underside and wonder if anyone can tell me how much of this would be considered normal?

Love your videos!! Thanks for sharing. Do you have any videos on the different kinds of grasses? Like jet streams or maiden grasses, Mexican Feathergrass etc I’m looking for some kind of upright tall grass. Looking for a grass that does not look like a big burst ball. They’re pretty but just not in a space that I need it. I need a tall slender looking grass that does not spread. Is there anything like that? Thanks again for your help:-)

Jim, as you are categorizing, will you consider deer resistance as a category? Deer are far and away my biggest gardening challenge.
@Iris-gy2mi3 жыл бұрын
I struggle with this. I've bought so many plants that are "deer resistant" as deer food essentially.
@tamarabradshaw47993 жыл бұрын
If deer are hungry enough they will eat practically anything. They love rose of sharon, hydrangeas, roses, azaleas, hostas and most perennial and annual flowers except Marigolds and Zinnias. We have many very hungry deer in our wooded neighborhood but they haven’t touched my boxwoods at all👍. I just purchased some Holly that they’ve ignored and I’m searching gardening centers for tough and leathery or sharp and spiky shrubs. They eat evergreens in the winter. A Glossy Abelia tag said “deer resistant” but they nibbled almost all the blooms off. The don’t like Lavender or herbs in that family. I was very upset about the deer destroying my perennial garden but now that I’ve taken a deep breath and gotten over it I’m actually enjoying the search for things those buggers (I really do love the wildlife here) do not like at all. I’m learning a lot and going with the flow on this new journey. Hope this was a little helpful.

Anything in the mint family is usually a safe bet. The mint family is vast. A couple good ones that come to mind are lavender and sage. They are high in the chemical camphor which is also a turn off to insects as well. It’s doesn’t make for a tasty snack. Note that lavender and other small new plants can be enticing still but after the first year it should be potent enough to detour them.

Are any of the non invasive nandinas taller growing? I don’t like them as small balls and prefer the bamboo-like leggy habit of the classic domestica but none of the newer nandinas get that big
@JimPutnam5 жыл бұрын
Obsession can reach around 4 feet in height
@nagrabagra49245 жыл бұрын
TY for mentioning that word 'non invasive' and Nandina in the same breath. My aunt had planted some in the yard before she died, and when we bought the house I noticed all these little red leafed shoots EVERYWHERE in the yard. I'd walk around and pull them up, then I realized that they matched the leaves on the Nandinas in the front yard, so I dug them out and threw them away. I tried to find out if they were invasive but could never find any info on them. From then on I've avoided Nandinas altogether.
@JimPutnam5 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely a big change in the new varieties.
@RyanH08095 жыл бұрын
Second what Jim Says. There are so many wonderful, non-invasive (and compact) varieties out now a days. Obsession, Flirt, Blush Pink, Sienna Sunrise and even the tried and true Gulf Stream Nandina, which has been out for a long time. Definitely don't miss out on Nandina!

Berberis thunbergii "Japanese Barberry" is an awful choice as it is an non-native invasive plant that birds will spread and displace native plants, forming dense thorny thickets.

Jim, how can I find someone who landscapes in Birmingham Alabama. I don’t have a lot of money and my land is nothing but chirt. At my age I just can’t dig a hole with a pick, it takes me 2 days. Any suggestions?
@nancybennett92655 жыл бұрын
I am of an age where I can't dig in my garden like I used to do. One thing that has helped me is using a bulb auger. It really loosens up the soil then I can shovel the loosened soil. I got the auger bit for less than 10.00.
@marthamydear74995 жыл бұрын
Nancy Bennett Thanks for the tip, Nancy! I bought a Gardenia bush and some butterfly weed plants. Wasn’t looking forward to digging the holes (heavy clay-like soil).
@nancybennett92655 жыл бұрын
@@marthamydear7499 I sure hope it helps you. I bought the bulb auger bit for 7.00 on EBay. My husband had the cordless drill. It helps me tremendously. Hope you plants do well!
