If there’s anything I’ve learned from Let’s Read’s storytelling, it’s that if there’s any sort of vacant room in your living space - don’t just simply never go in there, check it every now and again to make sure that it is, indeed, vacant.

Just don't ever have a roommate/flatmate. These stories are just too numerous. I, myself, went through three absolutely HORRIFIC experiences, with three different female roommates, over a span of two years, while at college, before convincing my parents to help me pay for a single, off campus. They had thought that maybe I was exaggerating about the other girls, bc I wasn't used to living with another person in the same room. Then they came to visit while I was still living in the dorm with the third, and final horrible roommate. And they were absolutely horrified with the situation, and agreed to get me the hell out by next semester. The school wouldn't do anything except to give ME the option to move out, even after telling multiple staff about her stealing and other super inappropriate behaviors, and I wasn't going through all that. So, I just spent as little time in the room as possible, and finished out the semester. My tiny little basement efficiency apartment, that next semester, was SUCH a comfort.

Sadly the economy in America is going to sh*t. In the last 6 years, the rent has skyrocketed. I remember when a small bedroom apartment was a little over 600$. Now it's over 1300$. It's insane

The last time I rented a room, there were lots of problems. Although I rented a room from a retired teacher, her son going to university at the time would pop in and out. I noticed stuff going missing like clothes. I confronted him wearing my socks and it turned into a heated argument instead of an apology. I then put a lock on my door, with the landlady's position and there were no further incidents of missing items. Her son spent less and less time at the house until I moved out.

I think it's to combat the ideology that you are proud to be a sexual orientation or skin color and that alone defines you as a person, some see it as a positive, others see it as insulting and degrading to be proud of what you were born with/as and nothing more. If I had to hazard a guess, I assume he wanted to say his friend was more than the label/ideology he is.

@@Wachalpharoh he didn't need to say any of that bs everyone is too scared that they offend these days its funny.... people who say in their stories that happen to have black or gay they say i'm not racist, or homophobe when its irrelevant to the story, as its obvious he isn't and it doesn't need to be explained if he's telling a story.... it just comes off as defensive.

My worst roommate experience wasn't really scary. Just passive-aggressive. So basically I moved in with some family, and they had a whole bunch of pets. All of whom I adored, but was very allergic to. So I ended up basically deep cleaning much of the house, and they saw it as an insult. Because they thought that I thought they weren't clean. Oh no they were very clean. But the amount of pet dander that had gotten stuck in the carpets was enough to make my nose swell up to hell and back. And I don't like the side effects of allergy meds. They can sometimes trigger my migraines. Another thing they didn't like was that whenever their dog went to sit on my lap I would avoid the dog. Like I would pet her, because I love dogs, but I would wear gloves. And they thought that this was insulting or offensive. They also said that my room was private, and then immediately went back on that promise and went through a lot of my things. I was also kicked out with less than a week's notice. And ended up sleeping on the streets for a couple days.
