I had the secret service at my door years ago. My next door neighbors boyfriend was supposed to be fixing my car, but he was using it to move counterfeit money instead. They busted him in my car and they came knocking at 7 am asking all kinds of questions. But they must have been watching me and knew I didn't have anything to do with it. So yes, even as a full time student and living on student loans, I was still followed by the Government...

My dad had a government job and the FBI did his background check. Came to our house and talked to friends and family. My dad gets a big kick out of it. He's so weird. He also went to several war zones with his job, so we know they kept an eye on him, pretty sure his phone was monitored, too. Gotta be the most boring file in existence. My dad's big hobby was playing computer solitaire. He's got a 1000 game winning streak in Freecell. Obviously, a security threat...

From what I have heard, if J. Edgar Hoover had a meeting in his office with a Washington DC power figure, Senator, Congressional rep, Judge, cabinet member, what have you, he would conduct the meeting in his office, with the person's FBI file sitting in plain sight, but closed on his desk.

You have to look at the time periods, plus the relative birthdates/ages of the people working at the FBI; along with cultural paradigms. Imagine you’re the FBI director in charge of hiring during the 70s and 80s: would *YOU* hire people familiar with/followers of the Grateful Dead? Take it a step further, would you as hiring director hire people familiar with NIN; if the prevailing cultural sentiment was negatively charged towards their music? No. You likely wouldn’t.

They might have one on me. In the late 90s, after a relationship ended, I was living in a cheap, long-term hotel and working for one of my dad's friends. One day, a bank about 35 miles away in another state got robbed. The next morning my coworkers were laughing and joking about something at my expense. There was a sketch of the bank robber in the paper, and I have to admit, it did resemble me. We all had a laugh and went on with our day. After work I went back to my hotel, and not 30 seconds after I walked in the door, there was a cop-knock at the door. There were two FBI agents standing there, and they questioned me about the bank robbery. I gave them a handwriting sample, they left and I never heard from them again. I think another resident of the hotel called in a tip. Obviously I didn't do it and could verify my whereabouts the day the bank was robbed.

That entry about Trent Reznor caught me off-guard. I still remember a Game Grumps bit about a text conversation the two hosts had about some movie about Facebook. (The bit was considered funny because one of the two people texting was sleep-deprived and using Siri text-to-speech of that time period, so there were lots of misspellings) Anyway, apparently Trent Reznor may have done the soundtrack for whatever that Facebook movie was, so if he HAD somehow been murdered, it would’ve had to be after that point, and it would’ve likely made the news. But weird that the FBI would order a murder victim file for someone who’s still alive
