Fun Knife Fact: the Buck 110 was introduced in 1964. It was one of the first folding knives considered strong enough to do the job of a fixed blade. I bought mine in 70 or 71. The blade on mine has a different shape than the subsequent versions. My nephew damaged it years ago and it sat in a drawer. Then I sent it to Buck and they repaired and restored it to showroom condition, no charge. And they put a razor edge on it. 😊 The Buck 110 is an iconic object, now.

The first knife I bought for the purpose of EDC was the Buck 55. Really nice little knife but they have a few other nice little knives and some even smaller. The second I picked up was the Case mini copperlock. Also really nice and I recommend. I can’t believe you don’t have any Copperlocks.

I have a collection of Buck 110’s , two of them were signed by Chuck Buck on the blades. I use one every day to quarter an apple for my horse. Nice collection Tobias , I’m guessing Bear and Son is making the new USA Queen knives , it would be fun for you to do an episode asking your subscribers their guess ?

I bought a Gerber E-Z Out with partial serations back in the 1990's. Fine knife. I don't carry it anymore because of sentimental value (I bought it with a gift card my boss gave be one year for Christmas). Gerber still makes the E-Z Out with a skeletonized blade, which I do not like. Excellent video Tobias, but you've got me jonesing for a Buck 110 now 🤪 (I've got to go through my collection to see how many made-in-USA lockbacks I have.)

Don’t beat yourself up too bad. I think I literally own only one (buck 112) US made lockback. At first, I was thinking I have multiple coldsteels (that’s American) but nearly all their knives are made in Taiwan. It’s actually kind of hard to own a bunch of US lockbacks unless you have several clones of the 110 from other companies or multiple buck knives since they seem to make many fine iterations of lockbacks. Most of Spyderco lockbacks are made in Japan to my knowledge. I think there might be one or two models made in Golden.

That last Schrade Hunting and Fishing knife reminds me of a Mercator K55K or a Douk Douk. I carrry a Douk Douk in my back pocket every day!

I did a video on this the Schrade H&F knife and it’s subsequent clones. In the video I talk about George Schrade’s patent for this “original” knife. The original part is the lock. The knife was/is a modified Douk-Douk and very much like a K55K.

Tobias get a Buck 112 Slim Ranger Select! I love FRN and its handle is one of the best FRNs ever! Plus has a 3” blade for places like here in Illinois. It quickly become one of my favorite EDCs! Fun video! The Gran’Pa knife is awesome! The Gator is great too!

I will need to look into the 112. The thing is I have numerous 3 and 4 inch Lockbacks I'm leaning more towards the Buck Bantam 285, the midsize of the three Bucks.
@LeashMechanic

@@KnifeChatswithTobias that looks like a nice knife too. The 112 SS costs $10 more but for that you get a straighter more traditional profile (with imho a more comfortable and grip-able handle- ie if you ever need to twist or go sideways the flat surface is much easier to work with and manipulate than the molded finger grip design). The 112 SS also has a reversible pocket clip that’s shorter and is positioned at the back of the handle rather than by the pivot. Chances are you wouldn’t need to remove it. It looks in pictures like the end might curve up into one’s hand but it really doesn’t, it feels more like part of the grip when holding it, at least for me. Last there’s not having to shave that 1/8” off the Bantam blade to make it Illinois legal if that matters to you. But this said, one is only $28 and the other $38 so for the price of a single lower echelon Case why not get both!

The Gerber Gator lock back seemed to show up in every PX I was in. I always coveted it but never got one. I have never been a Buck 110 fan but have a few Bucks including a Buck Lite I picked up in a PX at Ft. Indiantown Gap that has been a great field and hunting knife. I got a Buck slip joint from my son for Christmas this year that is more in the modern folder style in profile and material that has become one of my favorite carry knives.

I hate to say this, but while appreciate the historical significance of the Buck 110 it really doesn't do much for me either. I would take the Gator or the EZ-Out over it any day of the week

Tobias, for a good solid #10 you need a Spyderco Native 5. Made in Golden, Colorado with a frn handle and a proper back lock. It's one of their most popular models.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 7 ай бұрын
Several folks have recommended the Native 5 but I'm just not sure how it would serve me better than the Para 3. Had I not bought the Para 3 I'd probably be more inclined to get the Native. I'll need to look at the Native 5 in person next time I get a chance.

Tobias I have a question that you can probably answer. I'm deciding on my second traditional knife and I noticed there can be quite a difference in price between knives of the same pattern and handle material for example I'm considering a mini trapper. The green bone is more expensive than an orange bone trapper . Is that due to popularity or is it more expensive to manufacture one over the other?
@KnifeChatswithTobias

My bet it is it has everything to do with demand/or that one is a more limited run. Are both knives made by the same company?

Ten is a high number to shoot for! I think a more enjoyable approach would be "show us your favorite lockbacks!" Apparently USA lockbacks make up less than 1/10 of 1% of my overall knife collection. Strangely, I was not shocked to discover this.

Thank you for sharing your collection. I' wasn't aware of some of these knives. BTW, I consider all of them USA made. Tobias, I'm surprised you don't have a USA made Schrade LB7. They are quite similar to the Buck 110 and many of us prefer the Schrade. I'm fortunate to have two of them... one is an NRA commemorative in a tin.

This is one for me to avoid, I can only think of two in my collection. One of them is a 110 and the other Budget Gerber. They're bulky and heavy so they are more apt to end up in a belt sheath. If I'm going to put a knife on a belt, I'd rather just have a fixed blade. It will be lighter and easier to to get out of the sheath and into action.

One of my biggest disappointments in knives are from the Buck 110 and Gerber products. Built well but the blades don't cut well. With that said, I am not a fan of Buck or Gerber. Especially as prices go up. Spyderco is awesome but you pay for it.
