Really love this one Assaf. It reinforced my decision to quit paying for a tutor, who was pretty expensive, by the way. After a while, three years of tuition, I realized that if I wanted to learn a particular song I could do that from the endless tutorials available now. I thought they would be teaching me songs, but really they were just teaching me technique or THEIR way of playing. The only thing you need to learn something is to play. And play. And then play some more. I had been taught the basics of chords, scales, theory, etcetera and was ready to go on my own and do my own thing. And yes, sometimes one or other of them would tell me exactly where to place my thumb, but that is such an arbitrary thing, isn't it? It depends what you're doing, doesn't it.

you are the greatest guitar educator in the world !!! For example me, i take a lot of time to really descover what type of guitar, music and playing i really want to learn and parctice, i spend 4 years to force me to electric guitar rock metal but i was never satified, i've no pleasure, no feelings, and than i try folk and classical guitar 1 half year ago and than i buy a folk and classical guitare and i really start to play everyday and enjoy guitar playing.

6 years i was learning guitar in a "music school" where i was tought how exactly i should post my hands and that i even should set my left foot on little postament (especially made for that purpose) to remain correct "academic" playing posture. Now i understand that guitar and the way you can play it is somewhat personal thing, though do you think that such a practice of teaching is completely useless? Oh and yes, i had no wish to play guitar whatsoever after finishing my school. And in the whole program was just a few melodies that i was really interested in playing (Godfather theme amongst them) and i have no idea how to solo/improvise at all.

I'm sorry to hear that. Most guitar players can't fathom a future where they don't play the guitar, I know for me if I go more then 4 days without touching one of my guitars I start to go through withdraw lol

I remember having to learn all the major and minor scales with no idea what they meant and what their application was. It was only after this classical guitar school that i learnt what they meant.

Hi! Your lessons are great! And you are an awesome teacher! Thanks for all the great tutorials. It would also be awesome if you did some more 'classics' (such as the tango roxanne) - just a thought :)

My first teacher nearly ruined it for me. He teached boring stuff and when he quit I thought playing guitar was boring. Then I got a new one who was a musician first and I made actual progress. I learned barré, soloing, a lot of rythm techniques and so on in a quarter of the time I was stuck with that old teacher. The main problem always was that that whole guitar thin was initally my parents idea an I didn't really want to play guitar for years. I did not listen to music which contained any guitar at the time. The real progess came when I heard Highway to Hell (which my boring teacher actually tought me before but somehow managed to do it in a boring way) on the radio and thought "Damn thats some nice music". And than I wanted to play like that guy on the radio and learned an so much more in 4 years than in the 9 years before that. I mean I had all the basics and stuff but if I had played for 13 years with that attitude (instead of 4) who knows what I could play today...

Music is a beautiful expression of thoughts and feelings, it's not supposed to feel like manual labour. Music is played for enjoyment and if you pressure people into doing it all of the time and give them unreasonable standards (or any standards, because they should set their own) then they're gonna' give up pretty quickly. Taylorism didn't take for too long in the workplace so it sure as hell ain't gonna' work in learning music.

Music teachers almost ALWAYS hold girls back by giving them non-challenging material (piano teachers in particular are notorious for this! example, giving more complex or faster paced jazz pieces to boys while assigning slower pieces to girls). Not pushing students to learn to read music and not teaching jazz theory when kids are young. Teach kids complicated ideas, they can handle it. And the worst killer of musical talent, especially for female students - male music teachers - female students are NOT your girlfriends. Female students are NOT your dating pool. Every single female musician (including myself, I'm female) I have ever known, has been hit on or even attacked by at least one and possibly more male music teachers. It doesn't matter how old the girl is or how she acts or how she looks - it happens all the time. I went through NINE guitar teachers and only one acted professionally. I was physically attacked by two of them; one was teaching when he was drunk, the other delusional and I had to run out of their studios. People need to be aware how common this is. Male teachers often mistake a girl's enthusiasm for playing music for personal interest in them. She doesn't love you, she loves the music, she loves practicing the guitar! This is a prime reason why many girls quit or get discouraged and many girls are scared or ashamed thinking they did something wrong when all they did was show up to a music lesson in good faith. Treat female students with respect.

+7796761 Abuse against females has nothing to do with the way someone looks, it's about power and control. Read up on it.

Dylan A. Kent of course not my apologise if that is what you thought I meant. I was talking about where you said every female you know has been hit on at least once by their music teacher. The abuse against females thing really feels more like they just met a bad person.
