Try playing something new. Most of the time you feel that you are not progressing is simply a plateau. You keep on practising skills or songs that you have mastered.

You Mr. are so right. I remember when started playing guitar, how impossible it felt to get my fingers to the chord G. I got frustrated, and practiced other basic chords like C, E, D, and when I learned them, I came back to G and nailed it, and I couldn't believe how it had felt so hard. I still use the same way, and thanks for reminding what it's all about. Diversity is the key to fast and effortless learning!

This video is worth watching for anyone aspiring to learn any instrument. In placing focus on composing your own songs (even if they’re simple chord progressions) pushes you towards developing deeper knowledge on theory and the instrument itself. If your goal isn’t necessarily to play other people’s songs, then don’t. It doesn’t make sense to spend hours practicing how to play a song that doesn’t belong to you and that is already made; there is no real improvement to be gained from this besides technical. In the end of the day you’re just left with memorized motions but no deeper knowledge of what you’re even doing. You’re so much better off spending that time learning how to create your own songs and practicing what you need to achieve that goal. You’ll improve much more over time due to learning what makes up a song and the different options the instrument provides (and way more fun).

Yes, leaving something and coming back definitely works. I have looked at a song that appears very difficult, try part of it, give up and put it in my file. Have another attempt at it, sometimes two or three months later, one, in particular, I have finally come back after more than a year, and I now find it much easier. Had to learn how to do the trills, the slapping, the slides, all takes time. A bit of experience, learning lots of different techniques over time definitely helps.

even though the arguments that you mentioned on your video are true, they are not the main reason for frustration for many guitar players. A huge reason for frustration is the enormous amount of information on guitar playing online as well as printed. It is well known that too many choices often lead to no choice or a choice to quit the subject in question. I guess many including me are afraid to make a mistake and follow the "false" teacher (from hundreds alone one youtube) or oversee some "very important" routine and like that end up watching hundreds of videos and constantly changing their practice by introducing new things..

I couldnt have said it better myself when it comes to the "people cant produce unless its already been written" this is why I have always teached myself my own style when it comes to singing, guitar etc. I am the instrument and I dont need anyone else to tell me how to use it.

Your comments about classical players describes my younger days perfectly. I was classically trained and fairly accomplished. But it was all "muscle memory", and no creativity. I realized this while practicing with an orchestra and the conductor asked me start from a certain point in the piece. I couldn't. I could only play the piece from beginning to end. That's all changed now. I play different styles. I improvise. I'm relaxed. People actually enjoy my playing. Thanks to teachers like Stephan Grossman, Kirk Lorange, and of course YOU. Thanks for much for your teaching.

Assaf very helpful what you are saying. When I began guitar playing one year ago, some persons told me, that I don’t learn songs and technices that are to difficult for my beginner level. But for me, it feels right. And after a year I am far from being a good player, but I always have fun and learned so much stuff!! So your words gave me the feeling that my intitious way to learn is not that falsely. Thumbs up for your lessons!!

You are very true, I shift between the intro of Johhny B Goode, replaying songs I already good with like The Shadows, then alternate with hand picking learning of Dust in The Wind by Kansas and then back to any my main song to learn so as to make the journey not boring as finally I will come back to the current song that I am learning and re-continue, in this way I never gets rusty on old songs while entertaining myself with side task which eventually will become the targeted song after the current one.

While for some who watched this, possibly accomplished guitarists, have taken a degree or two of offense at your theory, I on the other hand, by no means accomplished at guitar, found it reassurring and enlightening. As a decades old multi-time beginner, I have lived almost every single frustration you accurately described. My "breaks" are usually filled with frustration, to the point where I've been thoroughly disenchanted with my progress and as a consequence have subliminally, inevitably, abandoned my guitar. While I have, over the decades, always been drawn back to it, in only a matter of a few months, the frustrations creep back in. I don't appear nor hear myself making any progress. While not wishing nor intending to offend anyone, let me say that I am well versed and practiced in the "so-called" strum along cowboy chords, I simply wish to progress and get better. That's all. Thank you not only for providing your accute understanding and enlightenment, but also taking the time and consideration to make and post your analysis. Controversial it well may be for some, far more accomplished than I no doubt - but I've benefited from it. It spoke to me. Thank you. Sincerely.

When I had only been playing about seven months, just knew a few chord songs, I just wanted to play Autumn Leaves Paul Davids' version, (am I allowed to mention him here?) and when I asked my tutor at the time if I could play it, he said, he would never tell anyone that they can't do something. Best advice. Took about a year, but finally nailed it properly.

Thank you for making it clear to everybody that being creative is one of the most important aspects. In my time as a guitar player I always learned by ear, to be honest I cannot read music notes to this date (approx. 10 years), and got to know a song after 3-4 weeks. However I stopped playing the guitar a year ago as I made no progress whatsoever. I could practice as best as possible, I just couldn't get any further. Also I cannot stand myself playing the guitar it just sounds wrong and weird, I don't know why this is, but I guess I'm just not made to be a musician, though it was actually my dream (I even started this KZbin Channel to show everyone, but the dislikes were a little bit too true (and my voice is soooo ugly *ugh* >_

I spent an entire hour with my guitar teacher trying to show him the same point of view you're saying here. Some teachers just want their students to become the perfect guitar players, i want to be a musician, speaking the language and having fun with my music, and training without any stress or fear that i'm not going to play this right. You may look confused about the clarity of the idea you are trying to say but i feel exactly what you mean. This is a very good lesson. Well done.

I absolutely LOVE this video! All of my students will watch this!! However, I am a classically trained pianist, violist, and organist that started at age 3 and I began improvising my sophomore year of college and had no problem. I am able to perform jazz and compose music with friends and band mates. I think you're inappropriately using absolutes. My classical background was the only reason I was able to branch out. I don't think it's fair to completely dismiss the classical method.

I have come up with this mantra when I struggle with something new: "Your brain is smart, your body is dumb." The idea here is that your brain is quick, knows what it wants, and doesn't have much patience when it comes to what your body is doing. Your body, on the other hand, needs repetition--it needs lots of repetition to learn bc compared to your brain, it's dumb. BUT your body has amazing memory. And once it gets that feeling, once it finally learns, it basically has learned it forever. So as you're frustrated just repeat "the brain is smart, the body is dumb" and be patient.
