The best advice my dad gave me is if you buy something that is $1.06 tell yourself that it's $2 (3.45 is $4, 5.85 is $6). So that as you add your numbers you know that you will be below the amount that you can spend and you might have enough left over for taxes if you buy about 10 items.

I remember back in the day you could kind of judge what your bill was going to be if you count a dollar for every item in the cart. These days it's $3 for every item in the cart.

I make my list in the grocery store app, then put it in the cart. It gives me a total without me having to add everything up, as well as what aisle it’s on in the store. This way, I know exactly what I’m going to spend and I focus only on the aisles I need to go down. Game changer!

@@stacymontero6172 I was doing pick up orders from Walmart and then had to run in once to pick up a couple things and I grabbed a package of ham lunch meat and it was over a dollar cheaper in store than ordering for pick up(yes I went online to double check it), so no more online ordering from Walmart for me. I live outside of the city limits so any delivery for anything is extra charges and our Aldi hasn’t even broken ground yet.

I found I need a “break incase of emergency meal” for when our evening plans have completely gone out the window and I need something I can just preheat the oven and throw in - like a frozen pizza. That way if something unexpectedly comes up we don’t go over budget getting fast food which is ridiculously expensive these days

If a recipe turns out way bigger than expected, and we're not eating it down as much as expected after a couple days, we freeze a big portion of it for later for this very reason! Then when we have a bunch of deadlines at work or we just got back from a week out of town without time to do weekend meal prep, we pull those old leftovers out of the freezer for the week. We also always have some chicken nuggets and pasta around.

The self checkout for me is the complete opposite. I can see what I’m spending as I go and pick and choose what I scan in what order. If I’m getting close to what I wanted to spend I can choose to simply place unwanted stuff in the return bin in the section. It alleviates having to tell someone else my business.

We don't meal plan. We go through our local grocery ad when it comes out on Sun. Then, on Wed., Aldi sale ads come out. We write down what we need from each that is on sale. The next day we take off any on the list that we could get later or that all of us would benefit from the most. See what we are low on for fresh fruits and veggies and staples and finish the list. $100 a week works for us. We stay beneath that.

6:35 if you add up your items as you put them in the cart (rounding up for tax), then you don't have to ask the cashier to tell you when you've hit a certain dollar amount. You know before you get to the checkout line, and will have already put things back that put you over the budget.

1) I only go in the grocery store when I am NOT hungry. 2) I have an extensive list prepared. 3) I go early in the morning when the store is less busy. 4) I cook at home, start with my meat and then add the vegetables - keeping it simple. I shop at four stores every week. I start with the large, local grocery store first and buy everything I can (the prices are cheaper there and I get money towards a $5 $10 $15 $20 money coupon off for a future shop. Then I go to the health food store for the items that I cannot get at store number one. Then I go to Sam's Club for the certain items I buy there; organic vegetables, some fruits, large package of TP, organic olive oil and coconut oil, and brown eggs because their sizes are larger and their prices are better. Lastly, I go to my local farmer once a month and buy our meat for four weeks. This meat all goes into the freezer. Our organic, nutrient rich food is our number two priority (Our first priority is paying off our condo mortgage.) We value organic, nutrient rich foods because they keep us healthier, help prevent illness, days in bed, more frequent doctors visits, more prescription costs and lost work days (which equates lost income.) We do spend $1,600 per month on our food but again this is our priority and we do not eat out (except on our birthday or Mother's Day) and we do cook at home, do not take vacations or trips, drive a 2012 Suburu, and we now longer buy gifts for each others because we have what we need and live in a 1.258 sq. ft condo with limited space. At age 79 and 73, we feel that our health is our wealth!

Reorganize your pantry once a month, FIFO (first in, first out) by checking expiration dates, preventing over buying those cans of black beans. Clean your refrigerator at least every other week, wipe down those sticky shelves (you might find those 3 containers of half used sour cream). Check grocery sale adds before you plan nexts weeks meals.

The cash suggestion is a FANTASTIC idea. I use a debit card instead of a credit card but I always end up seeing a sale that I convince myself I need. If I only have cash I have very limited room to fall into temptation.

My mom used to pay for groceries with a check (still does). Takes the time at the register to write it out - AND record it as an expense in the check register right then an there - because she is worth it! If the folks in line behind her are late they should have left earlier. Not her problem. Because we are worth the time it takes to track our own spending and we're likely as trustworthy if not more so than the institutions we trust to track it for us. Because taking responsibility for herself is rewarding. Plus, it doesn't take but like 2-3 minutes more than card or cash, and she balances that checkbook twice per month: on the 1st and 15th like clockwork. You know what else? My mom is RICH! Like wealthy mcsmealthy. She can afford to take 14 grandchildren on international vacations at least once per year if she wants to. In part because of that habit. And she is rarely - if ever over budget. She knows how to be stingy & get creative in certain areas of life, and likes being conservative so the times she has to do tjat become rare. Of course it wasn't always this way: raising 2 + toddlers in student housing while my dad was in med school in NYC became untenable when she, pregnant with her 3rd, got mugged at the entry way of their building for a 3rd time. With 2 girls and one on the way, she was outta there. Worked, wrote, begged, and debted to get out. And it took more than 10 years to pay it all off but once she had helped us escape from unsafe, she never went back and she taught us how to hold tight through the rough times. It's her checkbook. Thing is like magic. That was the '70's mind you. There was no internet then or even many computer consuls small enough to fit on a desk. Ladies, we can do this. The checkbook is free and comes with our account. No excuses not to succeed, here. Let's get it!

Something that helps me is that, as I find the items on my list, I write the price next to the item & round up to the nearest quarter. Then as I leave each section of the store I pause & add it up. That way as I progress through the store I can see how much items are costing the budget. Also, that way, by the time I reach the checkout, I’m not crossing my fingers that the grand total fits within my budget.

Please don't be the person who holds up the check-out line trying to decide which items to put back. Use the calculator on your phone to tally items as you are shopping and stop before you reach your limit, factoring in sales tax. Our time is valuable and we don't want to waste it in line because you went over budget. Be considerate of fellow shoppers!

Checking your inventory is key. I try to always check my pantry, fridge and deep freezer before making my list. And I try to purchase meats that I can make multiple meals from. For example, 1 pack of large ground beef, use half to make meatballs for spaghetti and the other half to make tacos. Saves time and keeps my family from eating the same meal multiple days in a row.

I started using the specific grocery store app and the Walmart app to do my grocery shopping. I can sit in the quiet of my home and shop and find the lowest prices. Both offer free shopping and free pickup. We plan menus, shop my freezer and pantry, then shop the stores. I do not purchase toiletries or laundry products at the specific grocery store and save those purchases for Sams in bulk or Walmart. I shop generic always unless the same name brand is on sale. I purchase my meat from another local store who has fantastic sales on 10lb bundles. We are retired and on a fixed income. My budget right now is 450.00 per month for two and I can still make healthy meals. I do canning when fruits and veggies are in season. For gifting, I create baskets of canned goods. It’s working!!!!

Inventory!!! If I have 5 boxes of pasta, the one in the kitchen cupboard is marked 1/5 (big numbers in sharpie). The boxes in the pantry are marked 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, and 5/5. I only have to glance in the cupboard & I know if I need more. This really is fast to write & a real time saver. It also works great for everything in the bathroom cabinet, too.

2:49 A list is generally a good thing but if something you always have to use and isn't perishable - stock up when it is on sale (rice, toilet paper, spices, etc). Just because it isn't on your list doesn't mean the store is going to wait for your list to catch up.

A better hack is not to make a list and plan, but go to the store and ONLY buy what is one sale or on clearance. Make meals around sale and clearance items. I've been doing this and save a ton. I literally won't buy anything if it's not on sale, with rare exceptions

1. I make a small list as I have a prepping pantry, and keep my freezer filled. 2. I have a little money set aside for those clearance finds that spring up at stores. I have gotten some incredible deals. 3. I faithfully check clearance areas knowing where they are in several stores. 4. I shop sales and use coupons for things I will use. . 5. I call for coupons for cat food and litter. Often in the past receiving coupons for FREE products. 6. I am not fussy about brands except for Salsa. Tried different brands nope does not touch the one I like. 7. I look for alternative sources of protein. Not just meat. 8. I ask about reductions in meat because often the stores have terrific deals in between their more expensive offering. 9. I cook for one but make extra so have lunch and dinners for another day. 10. I qualify for foodstamps but never use the full amount for a month. So they roll over to the next month. I respect them and treat them like money, using coupons, discounts, and sales to stretch them further. 11. I am learning the difference between the terms " serving size " and " portion ".

We now shop on the way home from other mandatory trips out. Sometimes we're hungry, sometimes were rushed, and sometimes we're there during the heightened frenzy of after work, dinner shoppers; it has the auroa of Christmas Eve shopping. We are being more puposeful in our grocery shopping whether meandering looking for great deals with our budgeted stock up money or doing list targeted buying with permission to skip something if we dont like the price. With our more purposeful grocery shopping we are differently aware and assessing influential shopping factors. Being in a rush and having to make decisions is right up there for us; being hungry is easirr to keep in check than being in a rush.

I know cheeseburgers and grilled chicken were mentioned as easy meals, but just my two sense, as a seriously busy mom, let me give you the permission to make completely cold meals, especially if you have young kids. We have compartment trays, and in them goes a fruit (apple slices, grapes, blueberries, A CUP OF 100% JUICE ON THE SIDE), veggies (steamables are quick and easy! Raw veggies that are already prepped), a protein (doesn't have to be meat! Cottage cheese, greek yogurt, scrambled eggs or hardboiled eggs that are already prepped), whole grains or something easy like Mac n cheese, etc... as long as I usually hit the major food groups, it doesn't have to be hot, and it doesn't have to take long!!!! 😉 Save sugary snacks and chips for after dinner or for a fun school snack, not all the time because they are soooo expensive. Eating healthy can be pretty cheap!!!!

I have ADHD and I set a timer. List about 20 items, set a 30 min. Timer and see if I can beat it! Less time in the store means I'm less likely to be distracted by additional spending. 40 minutes if needs be or when Wal Mart re organizes the floor plan. Whatever is reasonable to you at yoir store size and list size. A month of sticking to my time budget can buy me a manicure for my daighter and I - and I still save! (Also I get a new Revlon manicure set evedy year or two depending on how often I use them: for $12-20 it pays for itself almost right away! Look good shopping!)

I don't think it's right to bring your cart to the checkout if you know you can't buy all the items. Tally your total as you shop. Start with most important to least important. Dropping cereal and breakfast bars gave us more budget room. Premake egg muffins, pancakes, waffles, overnight oats instead.

I’ve shopped basically the same for over50 years, not buying extras, knowing what I need, no juices, snacks or drinks. I did consciously modify my shopping strategy in 1975, adding specific non-perishable items that would allow me to invite dinner guests ad lib, spur-of-the-moment. It allows me to entertain friends anxiety-free.

I have a great tip especially for you Rachel when you buy your sour cream, put the one you already have in your fridge up front put the new container behind the already opened one it won't go bad because you eat it on every day thing as I watched this video I do the same thing with my coffee creamer I put the opened one first and then the new ones behind the used one I go by expiration date I take ad of the 2 for one sale ,I find it works great for my groceries storing system

Buy non food items you know you will need when they are on sale and STOCK UP ON THEM..! I do that with dish washing liquid, laundry detergent, toilet paper, tissues, shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, shave gel, flossers, and even socks and boxer briefs.. That way, you will most probably not have to go to the store to buy those specific items and never have to pay regular price for them. They won't go bad and you know you'll need and use those items. That also helps to cut down on going to the store and most likely spending money on things you didn't plan on buying, and it also helps to keep you on budget when you are buying groceries. Another big thing: Try to go to the supermarket the earliest you can. That is when it will be the most stocked and you will most likely find what you are looking for. If an item is out of stock, you'll know it wasn't because you went too late during the day.. or worse, at night.. Especially when certain things are on sale..

Grocery shop once a month. Keep a small amount cash to replenish items like milk, eggs and veggies. Also grill the meat for the week on Sunday evening for meal planning or to have on hand for quicker meals. Grind your own meat for ground beef or chicken. It’s cheaper than buying ground meat.

I agree with rounding and adding as you go. It keeps you on budget, ensures you get the most important items AND is being kind to the cashier and fellow shoppers. As a grocery cashier I can tell you it’s not fun having to run through a list of items (doesn’t matter if it’s $20 or $200) to find and remove random things from the bill, pull them out of the bag, and then have to put back whatever was still left left in the cart. Not to mention it holds up the line. Please don’t make the cashier your budget accountability buddy. They already get paid too little and have to deal with too much. A better practice is to add as you go & have one or two “bonus” items in the child seat of the cart. If you’re under budget at checkout out you can add them at the end and feel like you got something extra instead of having to take things off. This is what I do and it helps me get through the line faster and have a more positive experience overall when working with a tight budget.

I make a menu plan based on the sale flyers. All week, when I open a new package of whatever, I put it on my list and put if on sale. For pantry staples, I can't Remember the last time it didn't go on sale before I ran out. I buy ingredients not preprepped stuff. And I buy it all on my credit card! Not even sorry. I have a budget and stick to it. Meal planning is key.

One tip that I have learned to make sour cream, cottage cheese, yogurt, and even opened spaghetti sauce last longer is to turn the containers upside down in your refrigerator. Make sure your lids are on tight. It prevents air from getting in the top of the item, and sour cream and cottage cheese last longer than the expiration date. I have been using this method for years. I have paper next to the refrigerator, and if you use the last of something add it to the list. If it is not on the list, I don't buy it. I go on the websites for the grocery stores and compare prices. It does take a little time, but you do save money. We also meal plan for the week, and I usually plan my meals around what is on sale for the week. If chicken is on sale for the week, I usually buy an extra package and freeze it. This has worked well for my family. I use my crockpot a lot, and find it makes the meat very tender. You do have to plan ahead. Sometimes, I will cook a roast on Sunday, and have it for leftovers on Monday. Monday night, slice it for roast beef sandwiches on Tuesday night for a quick meal. Or put the sliced meat in the freezer for a quick meal later in the week or the following week when you know you are going to have limited time.

My hubby and I were eating 647 bread because it’s healthy, good for the Weight Watchers program and we enjoy it. On a recent grocery shopping trip, we saw the price skyrocketed to $4.09 per loaf AT ALDI! Aldi’s white bread is .50 per loaf. We switched. Saving money. We want to eat less bread. The Aldi bread is more points, but we eat less to stay on program. A win all around.

I don't drive so I only shop via app. Unfortunately we don't have many options for groceries--Raleys (too expensive), Walmart (no ad) & Grocery Outlet (doesn't always have certain products). But I am trying to be better about meal planning...strugg is to not get burnt out on the same stuff over & over, eat well, make stuff my toddler will eat and also cover both vegetarian & non-vegetarian. Plus baby food & toddler snacks. It's insane. (My toddler is speech delayed & on the spectrum and has issues when it comes to food.)

I use tally marks on my list and always round up. I tally in increments of 20 and I count up by 20's. 20, 40, 60, 80, etc. marking the increments as I go.That way I'm sure I'm below my budget when I get to the cashier.

I make a detailed meal plan then use the walmart app to put everything I'll need in the cart so I know my total before I even go. I add like $10 to the budget for one impulse buy. That way I feel like I get something not on the list I may want without going crazy.

The problem with not taking your kids is that they don't learn. These are all basics to me because my mom took me shopping all the time. My boys already know how to look for a sale at 6 and 8.

Never have I ever spent more because I have a credit card. It's called a budget! Whether you are paying at the cashier with plastic or cash, it makes no difference if you stick to your budget. In fact, my credit card SAVES me money by earning 5% cash back! Why don't they understand this? They preach budget budget budget, but don't think people have the brains to stick to that budget? Method of payment makes no difference as long as you stick to your budget. I pay off my credit card every week and enjoy the fruits of my cash back.

I do the same. My card offers double points for groceries, so I budget every week and use my card for the points and pay it back weekly with the money that’s already been budgeted for.

Our stores' self checkouts are limited to 20 items and I find that so helpful for not overspending. I also only bring the number of reusable bags that hold the amount of food that I am prepared to pay for in any one trip.

I am now buying conventional produce only. I do not have the $ for organic and I often don’t buy certain fruits and veggies if it’s not organic. It’s better to put that $ into organic meat which has been shown to have a bigger environmental impact than organic produce.

I plan it by meals. Entree, sides. And I plan for most if not all are absolutely leftovers each meal. If meats are on sale (like at Aldi with the red sticker discount) or at Kroger, I do buy a few at a time. I use up what we have before buying new.

Comparison shop prices between stores, buy things on sale only, buy produce in season, try not to buy things in the center of the supermarket

Shop with the appropriate sized basket or cart that corresponds with your list. Or, if you bring your own shopping bags, only bring the size/number necessary for your purchases. This reduces the temptation to add impulse items. No cheating!

Generics are so valuable! Common sense - grocery store chains do not have factories making all these products. That national brand company puts a private label on the same product. A product I sold for years was made this way. I visited the factory - at the end of the production line the operator just changed boxes. I literally had customers tell me my product was better than the other brand - exactly the same.

You could have problems in UK with going to a cashier, most supermarkets have got rid of them. On a good point you can scan your products as you go round and it tells you what your total is.

Yea I think it’s time to update the policy on credit cards. There’s an upcharge at the grocery store and other realtors to cover credit card fees. If you use your card and you get cash back/points, you make that money back. I think if you’re not responsible enough for a credit card, it’s obviously not worth it. However, most adults should be able to understand basic credit card usage.

Know what is in your refrigerator. If it is so full you don't know, you have too much. Take note of perishable things that get thrown out. The absolute cheapest brand is not always the wisest buy if your family doesn't like it. Always have something easy on hand to make for dinner so you aren't stuck getting takeout. I have found that if I go to the store right after eating, I don't get enough. So not starving but not stuffed either.

100% on everything, the meal plan has to be kept simple and delicious but healthy in order for it to be sustainable, and the Wallet tends to stay home so I can’t swipe any plastic debit card period, barely carry any cash either and forget about Apple Pay, I never use my phone for paying, no way

I don’t agree with the Credit card statement. You just need to make sure you already have the cash and pay the amount back. You build your credit that way! In the USA you NEED a good credit score.

I mainly shop at ALDI, but do shop at Walmart. I also shop a small mom and pop shop for fresh veggies. Great prices when you shop around. Ours are all located close to each other so it's not a big deal to go a couple of places to shop. We stopped drinking soda over 1year now and I don't miss it at all. It's not good for you anyways.

My favorite store to shop to save money is Aldi’s. I save even more with them than Trader Joe’s, which is also affordable but they’re definitely a step up from Aldi’s and they’re cute packaging and snacks makes me overspend every time 😭 so I had to go back to Aldi’s. But if there something that I need that Aldi’s doesn’t have I go right across the street to Shop Rite and I still don’t go over budget because I saved so much at ALDI

I disagree with leaving your kids at home. Just tell them no, it’s not on the list. Teach them what you are doing it’s how they will learn to be responsible.
