I kind of imagine it that when Hatterene senses strong emotions, that causes it pain and any creature will respond violently when in pain, regardless of whether it was intentional or not. You could have one on your team, so long as you control yourself. Feeling emotions is fine. Overexertion will hurt your Hatterene and cause it to fly into a rage. Still, probably a good idea to have a Gardevoir on your team just in case.

My take on Runerigus' dex entry is that it's a completely different entity than Yamask. That by weakening our Yamask to "evolve" it it succumbs to the hostile spirit that is Runerigus. Literally sacrificing our sweet ghost boy for an actual malevolent spirit.

According to the Sword dex entry for Yamask, it's the slab itself which is possessing the Yamask and not the other way around. Weakening Yamask must allow the slab to take over, hence Runerigus being a new Pokemon and not Galrian Cofagrigus.

Is a small, electric type, yellow raptor 2. Is a big. dragon type, red-green dino with spikes on the back 3. A blue, water type fish, maybe related to Relicanth 4. A blue-white, ice type plesiosaur For what ever reason we have no behinds for the raptor and the fish and no heads for the dino and the plesiosaur.
