Though not a true emperor, the empress dowager Cixi deserves to be on this list. She really controlled the throne in the late Qing dynasty and stopped all attempts at 'self strengthening', which allowed the foreign imperialists to control China with the Japanese especially ravaging China.

I KNEW you were going to mention Sun Hao. Face it, after Zhuge Liang's failures during the Five Northern Campaigns, each of the 3 kingdoms started to whittle away from their own internal issues, even when Wei in the end managed to win it all. The Jin Dynasty afterwards was anything save for lasting. Also, Zhuge Liang in real life was more of a political admin (and a VERY good one at that). His military expertise was standard at best while also exaggerated in both the novel and Dynasty Warriors. : P

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the personal life of the worst emperors cause it was what made them more deplorable as a person and an emperor. For example, Sui Yangdi (the emperor on number 8), was said to be pretty nasty as a character as well as a mediocre emperor and strategist. He was rumor to killed his father when he thought of replacing Yangdi's brother as the crown prince, and sexually abused his father's concubines and took them as his own when he ascended the throne. Emperor Qianfei (who is on the first place on the list) was cold-blooded teenager who loved cruelty and played sadistic games onto their subject. He was also sexually depraved as he rumored to be in a incestuous relationship with his sister and raped one of his aunt. The notable cases of his cruelty was when he tortured his official, killed him, and place his intestines into a honey jar, and ordered his male subjects to rape the princesses. And this all happened within a year of his reign... It speaks volume about how much he was despicable.

Good video. Except Di Xin of Shang and Jie of the Xia were not actually Emperors, because they preceded the era of Imperial China, which was started in the Qin Dynasty by Qin Shi Huang (The first Emperor of China). The Xia and the Shang Dynasties were both before that. They were more like Kings than Emperors

Qin shi huang’s life is the most pitiful in my opinion. He was born to a hostage father in the state of zhao in the warring states period. Eventually, his father escaped back to qin with the help of Lu Buwei, but without his son. When Qin shi huang got back to qin, he was treated very badly by his own grandmother. He became prince Zheng when his father became king. When the king was about to die, his grandmother attempted to rebel against the king. At this point in time, he learned that the king was not actually his father and Lu Buwei was his biological father. In the end, he still became king. Lu Buwei became the prime minister and he was the actual one who held the power in Qin. His mother, dowager empress zhao ji, also took a lot of power for herself and gave her power to a eunuch, Lao Ai. Eventually, Lao Ai rebelled, but Qin Shi Huang managed to stop him. Afterwards, Lu Buwei was exiled and Qin Shi Huang’s mother was imprisoned.

i would not categorize qin shihuang as one of the worst emperors. sure his methods were cruel at times but he did what was necessary to unite china such as language, measuring units, etc. before his untimely death he did have the intention of passing the throne to one of his gentle sons so he could alleviate the pressure on the people and pass more lenient policies but that was thwarted by his advisors for personal gain. without him, there wouldn't even be china let alone chinese history. in fact the word "china" is derived from "qin" the very dynasty he created.

Honestly, what Qin Shi Huang did was not that special. His father and predecessors did most of the legwork building up the Qin State and establishing dominance during the Warring States era. Unification of the warring states were inevitable under Chu or Qin anyways. Qin's unification achievements (eg. of language) is also exaggerated as people continue to speak other languages and dialects and well after Qin's unification. Qin's kingdom also fell apart less than 2 decades after he died. It was Liu Bang, Han Xin, etc of the Han Dynasty that reunified the 18 kingdoms and actually created a unified China. The people of China refer to themselves as Han for this reason. Furthermore, Chinese people don't call themselves Chinese as China is a foreign designation and a mistranslation. The Chinese themselves call their country the middle kingdom. So the word "China" isn't that important, and some think it could also have originated from the Qing Dynasty.
@darimiwamubarak6 жыл бұрын
@@Intranetusa What? Unified the language? Nobody can actually do that, even with and current day modern technology and advanced communications ; dialects and different accents will always exists throughout the entire time of human history. What Qin Shi Huang did was unified the Chinese characters. For example, there were 20 different ways to write the word sword "剑" before Qin Shi Huang choses 小篆 script as his preferred writing method that are to be use throughout the whole of China. After that, there's only one way to write it. That's why it's called 书同文 (all written characters will be the same), not 语同音 (all dialect and spoken language will be one). Han Dynasty also followed Qin's idea in this regard, only that they popularised the 隶书 script, instead of the 小篆 script, because 隶书 script are much easier to write compared to the 小篆 script. Qin Dynasty also unified the measurement system after he unified China. (统一度量衡). Prior to this, the measurement of one feet (一尺) is different throughout the warring states of China. Qin state's one feet was equal to 23.1 cm, while the state of Chu's measurement of one feet was 27 cm. After Qin Empire unified China, the measurement of length, volume, and weight were all the same throughout the whole of China, so that taxation would be much easier to implement. Qin Empire also unified the width of horse carriage, so as to unify the width of the roads built in Qin's Dynasty. Let's just say that without Qin's idea od unifying the measurement system, the road width, the Chinese language written script, and also the currency, Han Dynasty wouldn't have continued that system, and China will become like today's India, with many different writing system and different languages.
@Intranetusa6 жыл бұрын
@@darimiwamubarak First, I was talking about language in general and not simply writing because the thread creator said "language." Second, the Qin Empire broke into the same Warring kingdoms a few years after the emperor's death as the Qin barely lasted 15 years. It was the Han Dynasty that actually established a long enough government to actually make unification of measurements and writing have a lasting impact. Qin Shi Huang was mostly in the right place at the right time, inheriting the throne of a powerful state at the conclusion of the Warring States period. If Chu had won the war, Chu would have standardized writing and measurements in their way. Furthermore, India also mostly unified ear;y on under the Mauryan Dynasty in the 3rd century BC. However, it split apart after less than 2 centuries so its effects of unifying India was not long lasting. The same applies for the Qin. The Qin lasted 15 years, the Han Dynasty lasted some 400 years. It was the Han that truly unified China because the Qin's forced standardization went to waste as soon as it collapsed in its short 15 year reign.

Good video but rulers of the Xia (along with Shang and Zhou) are kings rather than emperors. There is a difference. Qinshihuang (which is his title given after he accended the throne) is literally translated as the first emperor because he claimed that he was on par with the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors which preceded the Xia. This is becuase he defeated all the other kings so he needed a title higher than that which he invented called emperor.

One thing though, Sui Yangdi's wars with Korea (Goguryeo) was a continuation with his father's wars with Korea during the Goguryeo-Sui Wars. Sui was already defeated before his father's death because Goguryeo had the most powerful military in East Asia during that and its cavalry, the Gaemamus crushed Chinese cavalry units and infantry. He continued his father's wars with Korea and it culminated in the Battle of Salsu, where Eulji Mundeok, the Grand Field Marshal of the Goguryeo Empire, dammed a river and destroyed the Sui Army with it. Out of the 300,000 Sui troops that battled Goguryeo troops during that battle, only 8000 made it back to China and the Sui Dynasty collapsed soon after. Korea (Goguryeo) won the war because of its military prowess, not because of some "fortunate" circumstances that became a handicap for China. Goguryeo was so good at warfare that it even vassalized Baekje, Silla, Gaya and Wae (Yamato Japan) at its height and even defeated the Tang Dynasty in ther first Goguryeo-Tang War while under heavy internal strife before it succumbed to a Silla-Tang Alliance led by the great Sillan general Kim Yushin.

While his and their Mother was nearby. I really enjoyed this video, but as a westerner it would help me very much if you had English pinyin spellings of these names as you go through. It would help me to hear the correct pronunciation next to its English spelling.

I feel Zhuge Liang is kind of overrated. The three kingdoms novel really over exaggerated his achievements while completely ignoring and glossing over his failures. In real life Zhuge Liang probably wasn't even better than someone like Napoleon for instance

I think there was too much pictures of the Qing when talking about the other Emperors. Good video though.
