Most of the women here who came into power, despite having perhaps not the most glamorous or moral lifestyle, managed to rule their kingdom better than the emperors whom were their husbands, as they realise the fundamentality of education and the wellbeing of citizens. And as a result, citizens were prosperous and agriculture thrived under their ruling (except Cixi ofc). And I think that people are not seeing the whole picture, yes sure Empress Wu might have killed her daughter and framed another person, but the end result led to a population that was well educated and prepared for military action because she was on the throne. It's a utilitarian and consequentialist way of thinking I know.
@SaraCVT
@SaraCVT 7 жыл бұрын
Katie Wong: Actually she probably didn't kill her infant daughter. The baby very plausibly could have died of crib death and the Empress WAS the last one to touch the child. Since accounts of the time do not refer to this, even when listing Wu's crimes, it is probable that this allegation was created after the fact and has become legend. As for Cixi, the allegation that she led an extravagant lifestyle and spent Navy funds has been reliably debunked. Most of what is commonly known about is actually false, due to a fraudulent book written during the time. I've done quite a bit of research on China, and these videos merely recount the "common" knowledge, not necessarily correct. Too bad.

I agree with you.There must have been a lot of machinations by the princes to become emperor, but they get praised for wisdom. She did what she had to do, TBH.

Katie Wong yes I do agree, I especially like WU ZETIAN almost everyone who sits on the throne have their bad sides (whether or not it was true) but in the end its how they handle after sitting on the throne and she was able to prove that gender is not a reasoning for running a successful and prosperous dynasty/kingdom.

What about Empress Gi? She was Korean, but was also the empress of a Chinese emperor which makes her a Chinese empress. Her also son became emperor which made her Empress Dowager.
@DullMarionette
@DullMarionette 8 жыл бұрын
While that is true, the dynasty at the time was a Mongolian Dynasty ruling China. Plus shortly after becoming Empress Dowager, she disappeared from history. So there isn't much to say about her time as Empress Dowager.
@alwaysloveyou93
@alwaysloveyou93 8 жыл бұрын
her son became emperor but not emperor of chinese dynasty, at the time her son became emperor, his dynasty collapsed. also, Chinese dont consider a Korean empress as their own history because to Chinese, Korean is foreigner. Chinese and Mongolian are more related.

If anyone is interested what exactly Lü Zhi did to the consort Qi: She had Concubine Qi's limbs chopped off, blinded her by gouging out her eyes, cut off her tongue and locked her in the pigsty, and called her a "Human Swine" (人彘). Several days after, Emperor Xiaohui saw the "Human Swine", and after realising who the "Human Swine" was, the emperor was so sick of his mother's cruelty that he virtually relinquished his authority and indulged in carnal pleasures.

I only meant that Napoleon and Wu Zetian share similarities, as stated specifically regarding their implementation of military, educational, and meritocratic reforms over their jurisdictions, etc, not saying that they are in the same category or even on par in regards to a global or historic impact. It was to point out how unique of a similarity and their successes in their time period was and as leaders and individuals

She was still an efficient leader and instated a meritocracy which, considering the era she ruled where nepotism and plutocracy was not only the norm but encouraged, is no mean feat. Overseas Chinese didn't go through Chinese Communist culture revolution so they still use traditional Chinese culture and are usually more cultured than mainland Chinese. Mainland Chinese use simplified Chinese characters and are usually less cultured. You often hear bad behaviors from mainland Chinese tourists. You can compare Taiwainese vs Mainland Chinese to see the differences even though they were from the same roots.

Great video! I'm writing an essay regarding Wu Zetian's economical, political, and social achievements within her reign. The point is to show her good side, how she contributed to improve Tang dynasty's economic background and women's position back then. If anyone can recommend me any books/textbooks about these aspects of the empress, I'd be very grateful. It'd be even better if there are books about this written in Spanish, since it's my native language, but English is just fine too.

Good info I love your channel ^_^ But you shoulda mentioned that Wu Zetian was committed into a Buddhist nunnery after the death of her first husband (Taizong), and escaped by winning the heart of her second husband Gaozong/Taizong's son through writing. She sent poetry to the emperor until, against all odds, he ordered she be sent back to the capital and serve as a consort. I think that part makes her success especially unlikely and impressive!

I have used some of these stories to show my daughter's that we women can do anything we put our minds to. We are not Chinese but I still think these stories are relevant no matter what race you are and were you come from.

Wait wait wait.. 5:42 This chick didn't get mad at her husband for impregnating someone other than her?? And she willingly took her step child (step child, right?) and raised em as her own? Guessing that they left the maid? Jesus, if that was me, I'd slap 'em

Zeawesomeivdgaming The Filipino Mango Queen in the olden days in China, it is important to bear a son as son is more important than a female due to popular belief. Hence , in the kingdom, the empress will be fine to have another woman to bear her husband's child or smth liddat hehe

Great video, as always! I'd recommend taking it a bit slower, next time, if only so that people can catch the wonderful information you're spreading. Just a little pause between sentences and (in this case) concubines. Best of luck! :D
