Actually, the true moral of these stories is that looks aren't everything. As a matter of fact, these stories were tales of how the pursuit of indulgence in beauty and looks can be detrimental to ones and others livelihoods. Comparing a modern person and a past king, for example, had they focused on family and statehood matters.

of course it is the men, but it is a great way to warn the other emperors to be caerful of the women they indulge too much, because it is pretty hard to directly excuse the emperor in the face, so they say : "please remember the old stories, and be caeful with women".

Some of the women were doing it on purpose, some of they were spies from their own country and sent there as a honey trap or to provoke jealousy about comrades. It's not just beauty, it's well-planned strategies. A lot of them sacrificed their own happiness for their people and became pawns willingly or unwillingly.

As an Asian growing up in Taiwan, I learned all these stories back in elementary school, and I really do have a problem with you making the video title as" 8 'women' who destroyed china". I understand you are trying to make the video title more appealing but the majority of the reasons why all the dynasties were eventually overturned contributing to the incompetence of the king/emperors instead of women. I think we all know that in ancient asian society, there is a strong masculine dominance and it usually pushes all the blemishes to women for all the blames. Besides, I think it would be great if you mentioned that Muo Xi (the first one) daji, and baosi are not the real historical figures (in question) because the real chinese history (中國史) started from qin (秦) dynasty; even they are, the stories you mentioned about all the women are 90% "anecdotals", instead of history. I think there is a line between history and anecdotals that needs to be cleared.

These stories are myths and it reflects the culture of misogyny (hatred of women) usually found in male dominated culture. The story of Helen was also not true, the Greeks had fought many wars with their neighbors and the war might not have anything to do with bringing Helen back to her husband. Women rarely have real political power and most of the people who wrote history were men. Cleopatra, from her statue, was not beautiful so we need to look at these stories as myths in historical context, they are not complete facts.

Yes, I realize my wording was lax, however these tales stem from some historical fact back in a time when oral story telling was the way to learn. possibly even when people are inspired by events in history. take the child's song London Bridge is Falling Down. everyone who has some tie to that culture knows it, it didnt really happen, but it was inspired by very real events

+Mela Z beside xia dynasty夏朝 he mentioned is tale, the other are all real, we have everything in record, check尚書(Shangshu). The earliest historical evidences way back to Shang Dynasty商朝(2033 B.C. -1562 B.C.). There were a position in ancient China called史官(Historiographer), they recorded everything happened, what they wrote are called FORMAL HISTORY or OFFICIAL HISTORY, beside that, the others called INFORMAL HISTORY or UNOFFICAL HISTORY, those are still counted as history because those are written in words. Of course it has not been approved by the imperial, which in the other hand, I think it showed part of the truth.

I try not to sound negative or discouraging to the content creators on youtube so I didn't comment on the previous videos because Jen seemed so sweet and I would hate to hurt her feelings. The difference with this video and the others in energy level and passion for the topic is noticeable. The energy is much higher when you are solo or when you had the "bro dynamic" with Dan. It is difficult to imitate partner/duo chemistry in entertainment. You can learn from Lucy and Ethel.
@Renwoxing138 жыл бұрын
Yea but Mike, and Dan's chemistry took a serious hit, and became seriously awkward in the days of their waning partnership. I blame Yi 100% for the split of these bros!

@amycheng51538 жыл бұрын
renwoxing13 Why would you blame someone's husband or wife for wanting and needing to fulfill family obligations? Mike and Dan have been best friends for over 10 years and they continue to be. Mike set Dan up with Yi. They all love each other. Mike and Yi are very similar and they're the perfect balance to Dan's quirky ways. Mike seemed distracted in those last videos together because he was trying to hold it together and not show how sad he was. It's hard adjusting to being alone after so long. Like Dan said, you grow up and go where life takes you. Sometimes it takes you 3000 miles away from your best friend. You would understand that if you were old enough to have known someone 10+ years. Or maybe you have to be Chinese to understand certain family obligations. Mike is Dan's family too, but Yi is his "wife". That has to come first.
@luckyguy718 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is any of our business or our place to comment on Dan & Yi's relationship. Amy is correct that people grow up and move on. So be it. end of story. My comment was targeted to support Mike right now. Mike is an amazing talent and a brilliant mind. Mike has a special skill of making people he doesn't know and doesn't see feel like WE are his best friend. His travel logs are excellent examples of this. I think Mike is strong enough and talented enough to just fly solo. I don't think he needs a partner or needs to imitate what he had with Dan. Sonny and Cher were great but when Sonny left - Cher was strong and talented enough to actually be stronger. Mike is the same.

The picture at 13:29 is from a chinese TV show, it's fan bing bing as 武則天(Wu Zetian or Wu Meiniang), so you basically got a picture of the wrong lady. However, She could also say to have in a way brought down a dynasty, at least she temporarily disrupted the Tang dynasty. She married the emperor but never managed to be his top wife, despite him liking her the most... but his son also liked him, so after the emperor died, she then married her son, and wu meiniang ended up outliving the son because he was sick. Then, instead of letting their son become emperor, she became the only emperor of China until her death, creating a 15 year period of Zhou dynasty, but it was then made back into the Tang dynasty after her death, as a son of hers became emperor. Also because of her, the capital was moved from 长安(Chang'An, today Xi'An) to 洛阳(Luoyang) - while her 2nd husband was alive though, but she was the reason.

Is there any king or emperor that actually found true love and had happy ending in history? All we hear is tragic stories. Or having a happy relationship and living happily ever after is too boring and not recorded in history?
@aClaudiaPac8 жыл бұрын
Paganini67 Maybe we don't know enough history yet. We can say Victoria and Albert, Sissi and Franz are good examples. But I believe others felt in love, wr just don't know because for their living periods, this was probably irrevelant.

Kenneth Rapp Exactly. And that's why even existing some that maybe found love in the process, it wasn't important data to register for the chronists at the time.

Thanks for the interesting video. It would be really helpful if you could list out the names of these women in the description box so those that are interested can find out more about them online. Thanks.

April, wouldnt it just seep into the ground after a while? They most likely lined the lake with something, such as stones or bamboo and THEN filled it. I'm also assuming that this wine is rice wine, not a red wine.

Fascinating to learn about Chinese history and the role that women you focused on played in each of the dynasties. While the lifestyle seems to be one of great privilege, it also must have been hard to keep up and deal with the gossip plus intrigues in the royal court. Thank you for sharing.

Would just like to make a suggestion; maybe when introducing the people-of-topic you could add the captions of their names etc. I hear alot of americanised way of pronouncing chinese names like Da2ji3 pronounced as dajee. As a chinese myself its hard for me to make out the names for me to do further research on them, maybe you could try next time to pronounce them with all the 4 tones. other than that really great video.
