In 1990, the power couple that was Konami and Hideo Kojima gave the world Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Nintendo released Super Mario World, and point-and-click fans got to bask in everything that The Secret of Monkey Island had to offer. You know us though; we don’t like to remember the past fondly. No, no, we’d much rather dwell upon the shoddiest titles that yesteryear had to offer, and so we’re back to highlight the ten most horrible games of one particular 12-month period. Here are the 10 Worst Games of 1990.

There were certainly far worse games than these back then. Shovelware, cheap arcade ports and sloppy movie tie-ins, moreso on home computers than consoles! I think the problem is finding 7 or more reviews for games released in this era.

Also if they are basing their reivews on just looking at Mobygames most of the reviews are from the late 2000s onwards, rather than contemporary. Not that many even comtemporary reviews can be trusted.

Revenge of the Gator doesn’t belong on ANY worst-of list. It was a lot of fun and I played it a lot, though the Game Boy’s screen would cause the ball to blur at high speeds (not the game’s fault). IMO one of the better video pinball games of the era.

Yeah Revenge of the Gator was one great for what it was in that era. Pay 20 bucks for unlimited pinball (yeah it was just a time waster), but still fun and could hold your itch for a real pinball machine for a while. It wasn't meant to revolutionize anything.

Don’t agree at all with Moonwalker, Columns or Revenge Of The Gator being 3 of the worst of the year as they are all fun games to this day. All 3 games also scored well with critics too! Revenge Of The Gator got a respectable 7/10 from Nintendo Life, 91% Mean Machines & 93% CVG. Moonwalker got 88% CVG, 85% Mean Machines, 85% Mega Tech, 90% Sega Power, 84% Sega Pro. Columns got 90% Sega Pro, 82% Sega Power, 85% MegaTech, 88% Mean Machines Sega.

Yeah it's good to have the benefit of time as people have realized without the bias of the console war or any other nonsense you can evaluate a game for what it was and is. Some stuff is was, and always will be garbage others have been seen to be much better than the original were considered at the time.

Problem is MetaCritic doesn’t include reviews from 90s UK gaming magazines (MetaCritic can’t be bothered to do the research) If they did, the MetaCritic scores would be much higher and they wouldn’t be in his top 10 worst tier list.

As someone who has experienced 1990 very consciously, this list is weird to watch. A lot of these games were used as marketing hype at that time and we didn't have easy access to review scores, as they weren't at all prevalent back then. Revenge of the Gator and Double Dragon were touted as big blockbuster games for that pinnacle of handheld entertainment, the Game Boy, and Moonwalker was literally everywhere. Its commercials made everybody want to own a MegaDrive before Sonic ever did. To this day, I still prefer the Game Boy version of Double Dragon over the NES or the arcade. Except for Abobo, who can jump into an acid pit right away.

Got to agree with you.. Moonwalker was a great early MD release. Having a jump in hardware that was capable of producing music from one of the biggest artists at the time was a huge deal. I was 15 in 1990 so I also have very real memories of these games being released and owning several of them.. and by no means should most of these not been in this list. I question the validity of such a list of you weren’t alive at the time… the presenter, (if the chap who kept popping up) doesn’t look like he was alive in 1990. Going off the back of a few old reviews doesn’t give a true reflection of the time and how these games were really received by us gamers, who actually bought and played them. I do respect the effort but this is a miss for me :)

Aside from Techno Cop and maybe Atomic Robo-Kid, every single game on this list is well-regarded today with some being considered downright classics. 1990 must've been one hell of a year for gaming, if these games were considered the worst.

I own an authentic cartridge of "Columns" for my Sega Genesis and let me tell you that it is NOT worth the 56.3% that was ranked by critics. I give it an 87.5% on the fact that it is very addictive and its' colorful graphics are eye candy complimented by beautifully composed atmospheric music. It seems that 1990 was the peak year of video games if the games on this list are the "worst."

I had Moonwalker on the Genesis and I had lots and lots of fun with it. Figuring out how to do moves that were not in the manual (like the moonwalk) and mapping where all the shooting stars were at was awesome. Those shooting stars turned you into a missile and laser shooting mecha Michael for a limited time and was always fun to let loose with.

I’m here to give Columns some love; my friends and I spent hours trying to outdo each other, and I eventually came away as the winner, managing to get all the way to level 99 and then finding out that it then resets back to 1. It remains one of my proudest moments (life, not just video games). Columns was a good game; it was entirely possible to play it and have fun.

1990 offered us also such "gems" as Commodore 64 games Chase HQ (Zapp!64 score 53%, Lemon64 user score 3.1) and Stun Runner (Zapp!64 score 48%, Lemon64 user score 3.4), although that one was also crap on all other systems. Another stinker was Ken Dalglish Soccer Match, which got an average of 29% from three Amiga mags; the LemonAmiga user score is an abysmal 1.61. Then there was the game that went under several names in different formats and regions, known at least as Mondu's Fight Palace, Fatman, Tongue of the Fatman and Slaughter Palace. I didn't bother to try to find original reviews for it but it regularly ends up on all kinds of "worst games ever" lists. And then there was the absolutely awful Dick Tracy game which was absolutely awful on all systems; Zapp!64 rewarded the C64 version with 11%. I could continue this list quite a while. There certainly was a lot of junk around that time.

You kidding right chase hq got great reviews on commodore, spectrum and amstrad. Cu(commodore user Britain's most popular mag for the system gave it 9/10,. It won Sinclair spectrum game of the year, it won golden joystick award and gameset awards for commodore version. Amstrads,Amiga,pc engine and master system versions were always huge hits. Did you just make shit up?

It depends not only on whether the cart is loose or it's complete in box, but on which revision of the game you're looking at. I think this is the one where there was a short run of carts that featured "Thriller" in the graveyard level before the publisher realized they messed up and respun it with alternate music. (Or it may have just been the prototype that had "Thriller" on it.) Still pretty pricey, though...

1990 was also the year Color Dreams started working on their canceled Hellraiser game. At the time was supposedly gonna be the longest and most sophisticated game for the NES. It was eventually canceled for being too expensive as well as Color Dreams and Nintendo not getting along. Color Dreams would become Wisdom Tree the following year and exclusively make biblical games.

I liked it and to me it had a more Zen feeling than Tetris. I think a lot of current gamers might not understand the flow state that a game like Columns puts you in and requires. Techno-Cop? Wait, I remember that. I played it. I didn’t own it for long, but for over 25 years now I’ve been struggling to remember the name of it. I had the rough memory of a part shooter, part driver on Mega Drive but until now the name had completely slipped my mind. Despite the controversial for MJ (which going deep conspiracy Alex Jones type that I don't think he did it. But that for a deep dive video for another day and it does get way darker) it wasn't a bad of a game than its arcade counter part.

Atomic Robo-Kid is a Genesis hidden gem, and while I don't care much for Moonwalker, plenty of people consider that game a Genesis classic...I do appreciate the acknowledgment of the rage these videos from the 90s have been generating, though.

I think a lot of people forget (or don't even realise) that Technocop was a port of a home computer game and just wasn't suited to consoles. Razorsoft seemed to love porting games like this to consoles. Even Slaughter Sport and Stormlord were originally C64 & Spectrum games.

I play Michael Jackson moonwalk at the arcade in 1996 and I beat the game. 😀👍🎮

I had Columns on the Mega Drive Triple game cartridge with Super Hang On and Italia '90 - I loved it! I never played Tetris at the time so I had no idea what it was based on - great music too.

From what I can tell by most of the worst of lists, critics used to really not care for side shooters back in the day. I will say that Techno Cop was horrible! I so looked forward to that game as I was expecting something with more depth and it just sucked!

I will not stand for your Columns slander. I missed out on Columns when I had the Genesis, but discovered it on the Dreamcast Smash Pack and loved it.

These lists are coming out really weird and I think the methodology is at fault. I’d be interested to know which publications count, and whether you’re actually including home computer formats as well as consoles.

Dynamite Duke was not a bad game at all, was actually a really fun game that I have recently replayed. A lot of games on this list don't belong here. This is the worst worst list I have seen.
