With the Y2K Millennium Bug scare firmly behind us, the world could start looking forward to…well, being glad that it didn’t end, for one thing. But aside from that: video games, and the line-up for 2001 was something to truly get excited about. Nintendo served up the GameCube and its launch title Luigi’s Mansion; the Dreamcast’s Phantasy Star Online reportedly gained over 300,000 worldwide users by midyear; and critically acclaimed titles such as Grand Theft Auto III, Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy X, and Silent Hill 2 firmly lodged themselves in the hearts of gamers for all time. But it wasn’t all sunshine, rainbows, and Super Monkey Balls, and we are once again shining a light on the absolute worst games that one full year had to offer. Although titles with fewer than seven reviews were omitted, a mere glance into the darkened pits of Metacritic has revealed to us a veritable buffet of tripe that we’ve all seemingly erased from our collective gaming memory. Allow me to remind you of why you forgot them in the first place. Here the 10 Worst Games of 2001.

Kabuki Warriors was actually quite good as a multiplayer fighter. The mechanics around combo-ing, blocking, and parrying were surprisingly deep and the stages were more diverse than that of the single player "campaign". The biggest issue that hurt the game by far was the misprint on the box that led people to believe it didn't support multiplayer.

Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast was just magical. Such an amazing game. PSO2 is almost unrecognizable as a successor. It's like trying to identify the body of a loved one after they've been beaten to death with a cast iron skillet.

Now, that's a real fine series concept. Being the old sack I am, I'd like you to start as soon as 1985 or 1990, but hey, maybe your core audience wouldn't be as appreciative, what do I know. In any case, I take for granted that if you end up doing it, you're gonna give it everything you've got, and quite frankly, it's all that matters.

Man, it’s a shame what happened to NFL Blitz… I’m not a huge sports guy, but I have so many fond memories of playing the first Blitz with my brothers. Such a fun game. I haven’t played many sports games really, but the few that I can recall being really fun include titles such as: Ken Griffey Jr’s Major League Baseball, NHL 95 (I think it was 95.. could have been 96 or 97 though), NBA Jam, Super Wrestlemania for SNES if that counts as a sports game, and of course the aforementioned NFL Blitz… there are a few more great sports titles that elude me at the moment, but yeah… NFL Blitz definitely let itself go man 💔

I played that Survivor game for the PC non-stop as a kid. I was obsessed with it lol. The thumbnail for this vid however was for the Wii version. I'm embarrased I even know this.

I had Kiss Pinball when I was younger. The game was boring, but the major draw for me was once the game was loaded, you could remove the disc and replace it with a music CD and have your own soundtrack.

I think the thing with pinball games.. is that if they're bad.. they're very very bad. A platformer can get by on the fact that even if it's awful, it still satisfies it's basic premise as a game. Same with a few other genres. But bad pinball is basically torture to play.

I'm honestly surprised at how many other stinkers are missing from that list - Aidyn Chronicles (N64), Ephemeral Fantasia (PS2), Hype: The Time Quest (PS2) and Lord knows how many Army Men games (Omega Soldier maybe?) may have seemed like surefire contenders for this list. It's stunning to see that there were even worse games that year.

man back in the day you had to work to be titillated with anything. i remember back in the 90's and early 2000's when i went up to my grandfathers house and he had a stack of playboy's next to his chair. i also remember old adventure games my family had where if you played a game for hours and hours you got to see a risque picture of a naked lady. nowadays you can just go on the internet or phone or whatever and see images instantly. just seeing how the world has changed so much in the past 2 decades.

If I'm going to play KISS Pinball, I'll buy an actual KISS pinball machine form the 70s and play it. Used to have one in my local arcade way back when I was a teenager in the late 70s and early 80s...dumped a lot of quarters into that machine. Not so much with the video game.

Looking at the simpsons wrestling graphics now, It kinda did cellshading on the ps1 when cell shading wasnt that big of a thing, I played recently the controls are still awful and the gameplay is repetitive as hell but it's not that ugly as you think, people seem to forget its the ps1, some of the best graphics on that platform were FF 9, tekken 3, vagrant story, driver and a few others, simpson hit and run had good graphics on ps2 but the game wasn't cell shading
