You keep mentioning the video game crash of '83 as if it nearly destroyed the video game industry worldwide. When it really didn't, outside of America things went on as normal. But I am also sure there are many awful games from the 8 and 16-bit micros that could have possibly made this list as some were made with various degrees of quality.
@Silanda3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as a Brit it's a bit annoying hearing other Brits talk about "the crash of '83" almost destroying the industry considering it only happened in the US. Home computers dominated here and were completely unaffected. Japan, the rest of Europe, etc were also unaffected.

@@Silanda it's one of those things where the only documentaries ever made and articles written all seem to forget the rest of the world and treat it like every country was effected because they were. Its also a thing now where people seem to have fake memories of playing all these NES games as if it was the most popular system here when it was out. When it was considered vastly over priced and wasn't that big of a seller. My parents did really by one until much later as was the same with many parents in favour of either as C64 or Speccy. Ok. Minor push back because I played the Friday the 13th game on NES when it came out and I adored it. Yes it was super hard but my friends and I traded strategies on the playground and eventually learned to beat it. It was great because it was about as hard as fighting Jason should be.
@PosthumanHeresy3 жыл бұрын
The main issue with the game is that the difficulty doesn't come from logical issues, but rather fighting the game itself. For example, walking left on a path and right on the map. That's not an issue that exists outside a 2D plane which has been mapped to a 3D world. Fighting Jason would be hard, but not because of the rules of a two-dimensional universe conflicting with the rules of a three-dimensional universe. I love the concept of fighting Jason by way of combat-based pseudo-tower defense.

This is a bad list; it's clearly not based on experience. It's like you found a random sampling of things that AVGN talked about without understanding them. Atari Pac-Man was a bad Pac-Man conversion but way above the basement for Atari games. ET wasn't good but it also had more going for it than most Atari games. Night Trap is bad in the sense that all FMV based games are bad, but it was far, far from the worst of the FMV games. Friday the 13th NES for some reason has a reputation for being much worse than it is which generally has gone away but you're still stuck on it. Even if the game doesn't do much for you, it's plenty playable as compared to other LJN games. LJN's X-Men on the NES which is completely broken and about as close to objectively worse as possible. The Philips CD-i games are legitimately bad, and not just for the FMV. Much of that is because the system hardware had trouble with the "gameplay" part of games. But there are far worse games than the Zelda games, whose controls are good - for a CD-i game. A game like Dark Castle on the CD-i has all the problems of the Genesis port with all the bad tech of the CD-i and is an exercise is self-hate. And, as insane as this sounds, the FMV wasn't especially bad for a CD-i game. Check out "Atlantis - The Last Resort", a bad Wolf3D clone with a slow, incoherent, embarrassing 3D intro which doesn't provide any information. There are games that try to use video to hide the fact that the gameplay around them has nothing going on, like Tetsuo Gaiden, and games which don't even do that right, like Connect Four and Alien Gate which might have enough gameplay for a free app included with Windows 3.0. The Crow: City of Angels is a bad game, but it's also a pretty standard bad tank control game for the time. For example, the far more famous Bubsy 3D is a significantly worse major release with tank controls from that generation. Custer's revenge is pretty foul, it's hard to judge any gameplay elements although I don't think they would be especially bad as a 2600 game if the theme was not what it was. It feels strange to be doing a list of "immoral games", but this one is pretty far over the line as opposed to Night Trap which is not over any lines, just over the heads of the politicians of the time. Superman is fair. It was reviled upon release as much as it was later. It's just new enough to have reviews from sites that still exist. "Do not buy this piece of garbage" said IGN and "it serves no purpose other than to firmly establish the bottom of the barrel." said Gamespot. Relative to the time, it belongs. MK:SZ also seems fairly bad and might even been a less enjoyable mess that Superman. It seems bad at least in relation to the expectations and the platform it was on. I'm not sure with all the popular games how you ended up with Rap Jam: Volume One. It's not well known enough for me to compare it to other weak SNES games. It looks bad, but mostly for being dull. Is it really worse than "Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball" or the broken controls of "Mega Man Soccer"? Even if it's less of a sports game, it's not worse than the utterly broken conversions of Pit Fighter and Race Drivin' according to what I can find. Heck, you guys are from a place with the ZX Spectrum. If we're going to have the worst games from the previous century, you should have SQIJ. Here's a game which a publisher put onto a tape and into a box with art and everything and put on store shelves with a price tag in 1987. It was written by a 13-Year old boy and due to a bug in the code not be played. You could start the game and that was it. Even if you hack the game to fix the bug it's pretty terrible. That's worse than every single thing on your list.

@H0lyMoley3 жыл бұрын
I dunno... there's an argument to be made that these games were influential in their badness at least. Certainly Night Trap fits that criteria. I will never forget the first time I heard the immortal line from the vampire villainess at the end: "You're all mine now!" Just a shame hardly anybody got to see it, because, well, "Night Trap". On the Mega CD. (Man, that system had some truly great fighting games like "Eternal Champions CD". How'd it end up laden with this tosh?)
@H0lyMoley3 жыл бұрын
Also, I could point to Double Dragon C64 as the worst game I've ever played. I don't think you could argue that there was a worse game from a technical standpoint. (You can walk to the top of the screen and jump, at which point any enemy onscreen would instantly try and follow you, infinitely trying to walk upwards at the top of the level, stuck in place forever in a walking animation, unable to attack you or defend themselves. This literally worked against every enemy in the game, including the final boss. Just as well, because it was pretty much unbeatable without using this glitch because of the player's horribly slow attack speed. Oh yes, and the end sequence was a picture that wouldn't render correctly, with music that wouldn't play, because tape cassette games worked like that.) But my point is... yes, there are many "worse" games that were just flat-out unplayable. But how to make an interesting list out of those? I think everyone who signs up to watch a list like this knows what they're going to get, and it won't be ten unplayably buggy ports that just don't work, like "Double Dragon", even if those are technically "worse". Why talk about these when you can talk about the game that almost single-handedly ruined an entire industry?
@freddiejohnson61373 жыл бұрын

Sorry guys (and girls!) I love you all to bits, but I cant help but feel this video is a bit rushed and a bit of a mistake. With the modern worst ever lists, you set the criteria of worst metacritic scores with a minimum number of reviews, as these games predate metacritic... exactly what criteria did you use? Also, the number of games in the 20th century is ridiculous, alongside the consoles that everyone knows there were more systems now largely forgotten,which you DO know about as you rated them all, furthermore the 80s in most countries was dominated by (what are now called) home Micros, and the number of games churned out for those was ridiculous, you could easily do a top 100 of games on the C64, spectrum and MSX that are all as bad as pacman So why didnt you do one for the 80s and one for the 90s? Because I guess you wanted the Atari games and no-one in your target audience would watch an 80s one Overall a poor effort, please try again harder as I usually look forward to your content

@@GregsGameRoom How about SQIJ (Spectrum), A-Team (C64), Super Monkey Daiboken (Famicom), Ultravision's Karate (2600), Terminator 2 (C64GS), College Football '97 (SNES), and as many R-Zone games as you need to fill out the list? SQIJ and C64GA Terminator 2 are literally unplayable: the first needing a patch released decades later, the latter requiring a keyboard on a console that doesn't have one. College Football '97 demonstrates what happens when you don't give a developer enough time to convert and optimize Motorola 68000 code to run on a Ricoh 5A22, especially given all the other differences between Sega and Nintendo's hardware. It's not just the broken frame rate - the collision detection and AI are struggling to keep up, as well. Karate is a fighting game with really big sprites and 4 moves you can threaten your opponent with, if they ever figure out how to make contact with your fist. Super Monkey Daiboken proves that Americans were spoiled, if an LJN game was the worst thing we had to deal with. The R-Zone is literal torture, especially if you're using the single eye-piece model. And I included the A-Team because I can't tell whether or not it's a self-aware parody of terrible licensed games - something has to be the best game on the list.
