Part of it was starting around TLC, Roman started talking, and people realized that his promos were legit bottom of the barrel quality. DeglarDeclare at the Royal rumble match *Stares into your soul* and Sufferin Succotash occurred within a few weeks of each other. Daniel Bryan was just the icing on the cake. It was a Roman Reigns who had only 1 singles match in his career before winning the Royal Rumble because he was out for most of 2014 after the split (going from it being hard to build himself in time to outright impossible). In other words he was pushed as a main event when he was still super green on both the Mic and in the ring when they gave him a Lesnar push. As a point of comparison it'd be like if Cody Rhodes was pushed to the main event...the moment Legacy split up.

CM Punk - he left WWE, but fans still weren't truly over that. Also, he had an interview where he talked about The Shield and Roman, though I'm not exactly sure how wide-reaching it became to wrestling fans. He mentioned the 1 vs 3 handicap match - Punk vs Shield - during which he was booked to win, but kept getting told to make Roman look strong in the match. He also let it slip that The Shield was his idea and that he wanted Kassius Ohno/Chris Hero to be the 3rd member to Dean and Seth. Daniel Bryan - he was the clear fan favorite and the Yes! Movement was in full force. In some fairness to many fans, he never lost his World Championship in a match, as he forfeited the title due to injury, so fans were eager to see him reclaim his spot. Roman's booking and promos - after The Shield split, Dean Ambrose was hellbent on hunting down Seth Rollins, especially after Seth beat Dean for the 2014 Money in the Bank briefcase. People started rallying around Dean, but Roman didn't really receive similar character development. He had TERRIBLE promos too, including the infamous 'Suffering Succotash' line and 'Roman and The Beanstalk' (which I think was worse than 'Suffering Succotash').

Let’s not forget at the rr 2015 we had Kane and the big show in the final four participants with Roman! Kane was near 50 by this time and big show was every bit past 40. And they were booed terribly every time a new upcoming talent got eliminated. To me, that was worse than Roman winning it. But that was undoubtedly one of the worst Royal rumbles I ever watched. They topped that off in 2022 with Brock winning and Shane McMahon and bad bunny in the final five then. I never thought the Royal rumble 1995 could get outbeat and it sure as hell did.

I don't even know if Roman being the "chosen one" had fully set in by January 2015. I started watching wrestling again around Summerslam 2014 so I might not have the best frame of reference, but I think the major issue was Roman after the Shield split had to slog through some truly dreadful, go away heat levels of promo, and meanwhile Rollins and Ambrose had a blood feud that was pretty cool (Even if it did end with a wet fart of a Hell In A Cell match interrupted by a blurry holographic Bray Wyatt). Calling Sheamus "Tater Tots", "Suffering Succotash, son!"... With no real frame of reference for Roman's Shield work thanks to when I started watching, he was just a rubbish Kevin Nash to me. And like Kevin Nash, we needed some of that WWE stink to be washed off before we saw what was underneath is actually pretty cool.
@showstealer18292 жыл бұрын
The anger wasn't so much at Roman in hindsight, it was the treatment of every other babyface in the match (Ziggler, Ambrose and especially Bryan) that pissed people off, literally they were all swept away so as not to upstage Vince's chosen one. The fact that they made it so blatantly obvious is what turned people off. Put it this way, if you took Rusev out of the final four and put in one of those three, while some fans still would have been pissed off, there's no way it gets the universal hatred it does
