Sometimes scaring a kid straight is the best teaching method. They need to understand the consequences for their actions, joking about killing other kids isn't normal especially for a 10 year old. Edit: If you're going to defend this kid, understand that the vast majority of school shootings were reported to the police prior to the kid shooting the school (dating back to columbine). Threats need to be taken seriously even if it's a 10 year old, otherwise people would be asking why the sheriff didn't act when the other parent reported before this kid shot up a school.

You have no idea of the context on this story. I find it disgusting that people would think it is ok to handcuff a child and lead him out for the world's media to use it for political gains. The very fact that media cameras were theirs to capture the arrest is extremely worrying. The media has already shown that they will lie when it comes to children.

He's 10... This doesn't seem this crazy to me. If he was in Europe he wouldn't be able to get his hands on guns, so there would literally be nothing to be worried about, do we really have to incarcerate all kids who send threats? When I was 11 I told my "friends" I was gonna stab them with a knife after they broke into my parents house and stole $6000. I was just trying to scare them, I didn't plan on actually killing them, that's crazy. I gotta tell you though, if the cops had taken it seriously like they do in the US, I would have gone to a psych ward or juvenile prison for a long time and I would have turned into a monster. I would have dedicated my life to destroying the society that destroyed me. Other inmates would have taught me how to become a real criminal and how to fight. But instead of that my parents sent me to California (from France) to start a new life in a better environment, surrounded by people who aren't criminals, and that approach saved me. Compassion saved my life. Mass incarceration is NOT the answer.

I didn't joke about guns but I did joke about hurting other kids. Mostly the kids that bullied me. I think if it wasn't for shows like Dragon Ball and video games, I wouldn't have grown up wanting to be like the hero of those stories I loved. As an adult, I'm normally the one who tries the hardest to help people. If I didn't have that goal of wanting to be like the hero, I know I would have grown up to be a very violent and destructive person. Kids who joke and fantasize about death don't have a positive goals like I did. They need better role models.

LOOK people, WE can’t have it both ways! We can’t tell the cops to do something and then when they do something, we bash them for it! Parents need to have that conversation with their kids about joking this way. It is not a joke and the consequences could cause them to be arrested! EVERY single threat needs to be taken seriously no matter the age of the person! I have two teenage sons who I’m pretty sure would never joke like this but I’m about to have that conversation with them anyways just so they know! The cop wasn’t in the wrong to do what he did by arresting this 10 yr old IMO.

His son is being held on counts of threats against his schoolmates. You will notice, that they do not hold adults in jail for threats against other adults. When I was nine, I was in daycare and threatened to stab another kid (I was somewhat troubled when I was younger). Instead of my family defending me, they agreed that I was in the wrong. I remember when my grandmother was walking my home from daycare, she saw a police officer and made me admit what I did to him. I remember that officer saying that he was disappointed in me, but also proud to admit what I did was wrong, and gave me a small lecture on how serious this stuff can be. I stand by this arrest. Cops need to take these things seriously because of the times we live in. And it’s not enough for a parent to say ‘I know my kid; they would never do this’ or ‘it’s just words; people say things they don’t mean all the time’. That’s not good enough. Children need to be taught that free speech is a wonderful right but it comes with consequences. You can’t say something that implies intended harm to yourself or anyone else and if you do, you face the consequences for your actions. No parent wants to see their kid arrested for these things, but better it goes like this rather than do nothing and someone gets hurt.

The arrest was right to do. Kids need to be talked to/taught by their parents and caregivers of rights and wrongs. This child should definitely be closely watched for a long while. Better safe then sorry especially in this time of much tragedies.

I agree with arresting him, I don't think it was acceptable to show his face, he probably has enough problems with social media he will only be ostracized more. He needs therapy, not isolation. Think of how dumb you/we were at 10, in 1998 I thought I could throw a firework in the electrical room too explode the campus and run out while it exploded like an action movie.

@@impulseelectrobrine1259 discipline is taught at home and it takes time . That is why until 18 a kid is considered small. U don't teach discipline by making child shame infront of the world on social medias , dragging him like a criminal which he is not. He doesn't even understand it once he grow up sensible this is gonna have a real bad effect on his psyche.

"He’s 10. What laws did he break? What ground for arresting a juvenile. What investigation was done? Why was his identity not protected? The only laws broken were by the sheriff and the school officials. Those who arrested him should now be tried in court for endangering a minor, defamation, violating his first amendment rights and probably a few other illegal acts performed for this theater. Did he have a history of violence? What’s his academic record like? Any signs of mental illness? Any guns in the household? Get a warrant. All the people saying good on the sheriff for making him an example, wait until they come for you or your kids for saying or thinking something they don’t like or is socially inappropriate." - heymikeylikesit1

I completely agree with the cop here. Yeah the kid is only ten, young as hell. But at the same time, texts like these shouldn’t be taken lightly. This could potentially teach this kid that in this world, actions have consequences. Enough is enough with crying at news headlines about kids and teachers getting slain in what is supposed to be a safe haven for children. I said this once and I’ll say it again, “if it is federal law for children to go to school up until they either graduate or decide to drop out, then it should be a federal OBLIGATION to protect these teachers and students.” Point, blank, PERIOD

It isn't the age 10...its the seriousness of the threats & how lightly it is taken by the 'enabling' father!! If the behaviour of so-called 'child' is adult in nature...message must go out !!

Let the man who has not a sin cast a stone at the boy. You have threatened people, I have threatened people. Society has a mental illness. Now we put 10yr olds in prison with adults, what will he learn. HATE. Not love. Hate is reflected and that boy is receiving all the country's hate. What would God say to you for the hate you show to a child?
