A Florida high school student was arrested on August 16 after he allegedly posted online that he would use his father’s gun to kill people at his school, police said.
Video released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shows officers reading to the suspect the alleged comments, which police said were made on a gaming platform under the pseudonym Dalton Banhart.
The comment read: “I Dalton Barnhart vow to bring my fathers m15 to school and kill 7 people at a minimum.” It was spotted by the FBI, who reported it to local police.
According to police, the teenager said the comment was a joke.

To be fair though her son did NOT DO it. And making a comment online is no guarantee he was even planning to do it, let alone was going to. So she is right that the officer shouldn't stand there and make it seem like her son is the same as someone who actually has done it. That's not right.

He didn't harm anyone,@@yakovbrod9992 . It's his statements online about taking a gun and threatened to shooting the school is why he was arrested. Law enforcement is trying to prevent school mass shootings from ever happening. How would like to leave your home just to go to school and, like a cop, hoping to come home for dinner? Kids go to school to learn. Instead, they're worrying if they get through the day without getting shot.

Where are the cops when groups of children target one specific child in schools throwing death threat after death threat in the middle of lectures? Nothing is ever done then. In addition, I see no evidence to support the cop's claim which for all anyone knows is hearsay. U.S. Courts presume innocence until proven guilty. I agree with your statement to an extent. I’d say it depends on how involved you were in their life before they were teenagers. Too little involvement or too much can absolutely lead to a parent not knowing what’s going on with their teen at all because either the teen thinks they don’t care anyway or the teen’s afraid of getting in trouble so they sneak around. @@iamamish Maybe I do t understand the context, but imo it goes both ways. Firstly we have the admittedly excessive arrests in the US, it's a world meme tbh. But secondly these things should NOT be taken lightly. A responsible parent and teachers would have drilled into you to take what you post seriously, the delete button doesn't always save you. In particular the rate of gun violence in the US is also quite the meme, and it's similar to an engine. You can have millions of safety systems around a feature, but if the component is not there in the first place it won't go wrong. But understandably guns are kinda here to stay, so it's prudent we contain the risk, so that it remains safe to live in a gun society, even if it means arresting teens for being careless/callous with their words online. The US is a laughingsotck in many areas, thankfully not this time. Such an arrest won't leave a criminal record as far as I'm aware, it won't impact anyone long term, but it will teach the child to be serious before he goes round boasting about sussier stuff like ahem ahem orange man who somehow became president does. All of this discounting the obvious security threat in the event he goes forth with his plan.

I'll never understand why people automatically default to the innocent argument due to the person's age. If anything, teens are more mentally susceptible to making bad decisions due to their hormonal changes throughout puberty. Not to mention external factors, like the environment they were raised in, the chances of falling into the wrong crowd, and even the constant media exposure kids have access to these days. I grew up in an environment where pretty much every adult I knew had some sort of drug addiction, and I was practically homeless off and on from the age 8-15 years old, and I'd say I made my worst decisions between the ages of 13-15 years old, before I decided to make better decisions in life, but it's not like I didn't have a sense of right or wrong at that age. I just didn't factor in the consequences of my actions until I happened to get in trouble because of it, but it's not like my parent treated me like I was innocent, once I started getting into legal trouble my mother made sure I took responsibility for my actions, and it helped me further flesh out the person I've become today.
