10-Year-Old Girl’s Plea To Tampa Mayor For Softball Fields Sparks Change!

After 10-year-old softball player Evangeline realized her hometown of Tampa had more resources for boy than girls, when it came to ball fields, she penned a letter to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor asking for more softball fields. Evangeline’s letter prompted a real catalyst for change, inspiring the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department to apply for a large grant to transform one baseball field into a multipurpose field where everyone can play. Mayor Jane Castor surprises Evangeline with a special thank you message, and invites her to visit the mayor's office so she can hear more of her ideas. This is awesome. I played baseball in a league from 9 to 12 in the 90's. I was the only girl in my league my first season and the second season had only 6 girls - 4 of them on my team. I was taunted by the boys until I got more confident in my skills. We never had a youth softball team in my hometown, but my dad played softball and baseball his whole life so I've done both for fun.

Its a good lesson on civics. So many people complain about this and that in their cities, yet they’ve never in their life contacted their elected leaders or gone to a city council meeting. I have a family member that for literally years was constantly complaining on his Facebook page about the condition of his road. But that was all he would do about it, complain to a bunch of mostly non-local friends and family on social media. I finally got so sick of it that I went to his city’s street department website and filled out a pothole report, two days later he’s posting about how the city “finally” got around to repairing the street. No, they probably didn’t even know it needed to be fixed because its near the end of a dead end street in a somewhat rural area inside city limits, and used regularly by maybe 3 people. And even if the city did know they probably decided that since nobody seemed to care it wasn’t worth fixing.

What is an only softball field? They should interchangeable. It's normal for boys to play softball in Canada. You can hit a ball the same no matter how it is thrown at you. So not understanding the issue but good for you for standing up for what's right.

Only problem with this is her name harkens back to the 1800s with the truly unfortunate link to evangelism. Names matter and this girl is saddled with an identity linked to the horrific practice of evangelism which is bad whether intentional or unintentional. Both are extreme forms of ignorance. Great to see her rising above her name.
