I remember lettering yachts to support my real art. When bidding prices I learned not to price low. The customers loved to brag how much they spent!

Good points. Hirst once said that it wasn’t about art but how far he could go until somebody would stop him, and nobody came. We are stopping ourselves with our beliefs 😢

The fact that this is true, just reminds me why I can't stand this world and how it works. This is gross and sullied of all pure heart. Thank God this life ends at some point for the higher world of true beauty and eternal truth and art.

“The most important moment in the life of an artist is when he is born, and when he is establishes an autograph.” Taking this to heart. Seemingly all influential artists have a brand, proko has proko tv, Kim Jung Gi has superani. I think I should make a brand around manga artists too, because it basically has few waves in the art environment or even the media environment as a whole. The problem with focusing on branding is lack of time for practice and struggles to even get people to notice it. Anyway nice video, thanks

If I may. I’m like 50 now. I grew up around artistic people and lovers of art. To some extent. I seen the amount of art decrease and peoples disposable income and desire for art increase. I tell everyone to buy any painting without looking at the brand if the price is low and the talent is high. We are approaching the dark ages.

we are most certainly approaching the dark ages. I'm curious what your perspective on 'the dark ages' might be. There are many perspectives at the moment. If you find the time, don't hesitate to share it.

@@driesketels when I say dark ages, I mean that using paint, clay, charcoal etc. will be as obsolete as flint knapping. It’s already happening. When I was a kid, I could find an impressionist painting at a garage sale or in a thrift store. I live in Austin. An average person could collect art and love it.. easily find it. The “starving artist sales” are replaced with sweatshop basic generic reproductions at a craft store… on a good day.

Brilliant. I’m a New subscriber. All I ever wanted to do is be a full time artist . This year after 30 years of the 9-5 to raise a family. I’m going for it! Social media is so confusing. I totally don’t get instagram . When I find an artist on instagram I can’t figure out how to go to a website, or message them. Seems like a waste of time. help! Can you make it without instagram?

Have you ever considered that all the arts-drama, music, storytelling, dance, and visual art-were once the sacred domain of the shaman, the witch doctor, the wise woman? These were the ones who ventured into the 'other' places, communed with the dead, conversed with the gods, and learned from the spirits of nature. They brought back wisdom to heal and educate their communities. Art was a conduit for the divine, a bridge between worlds. But as organized religions took root, they persecuted these visionaries, stole their arts, and twisted them to serve their own ends. They used grand temples, elaborate rituals, and hymns of praise to dazzle and control the masses. Then came the rise of an elite robber class, who took artists and performers as their pets. They commissioned works not to enlighten or heal, but to flaunt their wealth, to aggrandize themselves. Art lost its sacred purpose. It was reduced to mere entertainment, a hollow showpieces for the rich. Today, artists are disenfranchised manufacturers of trinkets and decorations, far removed from the spiritual roots and divine purpose of our crafts. Art has become a commodity, stripped of its soul.

Hello Dries, I've really enjoyed your expertise and knowledge that you've shared. If you could take the time to give an opinion it would be much appreciated. I've had a decent career as a professional artist since 1991. I've created many pieces and mastered many mediums over the years. A globally recognized artist friend of mine has implored that I create a new brand for my fine art, and disassociate it from my 30 year body of work (mostly commercial and bodypaint). At 53 years I feel it is too late to start anew especially with the looming threat of AI. I also like my given name and have issues trying to wrap my head around a new alternate identity. Thanks again for your advice.
@driesketels

Artists with brands don't have to worry about AI at all. Building an autograph is the antidote to AI. About your other, more important question. This would require more effort and time that I don't put in the comment section. If you are interested, take a look at the website where I offer more personalized advice. Have a great week.

Your friend is wrong. You hd a decent career since 1991, that is many years. Why would you create a new brand? That is the big question what is lacking? I would say to work harder on promoting yourself. IF you feel so inclined to start anew, at least I would say - and this is a good tip: create a pseudonym, make it like a side job, create a new account everywhere with that name, and do different art. Don't mess up what you have. But also count the time you spend on it, the efforts to get recognition, i think your goals are to surpass where you are now, so again, why not keep doing what you are doing but more effort in marketing (if that is what is lacking) or through the pseudonym create a side gig and see where it takes you. Good luck.

Often, when it comes to crazy expensive modern art, it's actually money laundering. Yes, the autograph is more important than the composition. But at its fundamental core, it's money laundering. Delve into this. I'm not making it up.
