Ten years after Disneyland paved a parking lot and put up Paradise (Pier), Some Jerk With A Camera examined the first decade of the evolution of Disney's California Adventure Park, and why they did very little to celebrate their tencennial.

While the topic at hand is a form of media commonly associated with small children, the purpose of this video is to present a mixture of analysis and comedy about said media from a distinctly adult perspective, which may possibly include profane language and references to sex, drugs and/or violence. KZbin, like many websites, collects personal data on its users. The Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) has made it illegal to collect personal data on children younger than 13, and rather than fix their own algorithm, KZbin is essentially threatening to pass the blame onto content creators whose work may seem "attractive" to children. The biggest irony is the fact the tractors were replace by an attraction featuring tractors. Bountiful Farm is now the site of Mater's Junkyard Jamboree.

I was actually there on Opening Day and got on California Screaming, Grizzly Rapids and Soarin' with only about 30 minute waits on each...my entire family was stunned because we had a lot of fun there that day, and really couldn't figure out why basically no one else showed up...might have something to do with THE FACT IT OPENED UP ON A THURSDAY IN EARLY FEBRUARY!! And now, just like Kevin couldn't voice Richard's bug brother, Richard somehow couldn't make it to voice Bing Bong in the emotional whirlwinds! He was in the Tom and Jerry Movie! The biggest irony of ironies is that this video is now abit of a time capsule for what DCA looked like over a decade ago. Also, in 2021, DCA got screwed over again out its 20-year anniversary. I know that was out of their control, I know, but still. Poor park cannot catch a break. Maybe it'll get a proper celebration for its 30th in 8 years?

Today, DCA has a 4.6% rating on google Reviews and for a good reason. Nowadays it's a place you CHOOSE to go. Even with the Tower of Terror ride there being transformed into a Guardians of the Galaxy ride, (to be honest it's going to have the same mechanics as the old ride and given my less than pleasant memories with the ToT up in Florida, I'm not sure how much i'll like this new ride more.) I see DCA will be going even more places in the future. Everything they can't fit into the original Disneyland goes to DCA and that can only, hopefully, work in it's favor.

So they made the theme park because people were leaving disney land to see the actual California. But why on earth would they think they could base a theme park about California IN California and then think it could compete WITH California? This belongs in, say, Japan.

What I don’t understand is that they were planning a new park based around America in general that they were having issues getting the space for on the East Coast. Why not just build that instead of California Adventure? That would be a lot more interesting.

I find it funny now that Iger is treated with just as much scorn as Eisner now. Hell I've seen a few older fans say the would trade Iger for Eisner again. Especially after the entire debacle with Shanghai that may or may not end up being another Disneyland Paris situation.
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 7 жыл бұрын
Seriously? They'd rather have DCA 1.0 than DCA in the 2010s? Star Wars Land under construction, Marvel Land soon to follow, and the rest of the company - particularly the movies - doing better than literally ever? This is the company that gave us GRAVITY FUCKING FALLS and people still aren't satisfied?! I swear to Christ, some people just haaaaaate living in the present no matter how good it is. Sure, MAYBE Shanghai will prove to be "Iger's Paris" - i.e. the fiasco that makes him afraid to spend too much money ever again - but what if we just wait and SEE if that ends up being the case, hmmm?
@cirquedusolielfan
@cirquedusolielfan 7 жыл бұрын
Tony Goldmark You nailed exactly my problem with people who just roll around in the Iger hate train. The company is much better off now that it was when Eisner was in control. People seemed to forget Eisner more than often endangered the company than saved it. Now has Iger done a few things I don't agree with? Yeah but TWDC is a buisness, and they are bound to do things from time to time that I don't like. Often i find so many fans say that they HATE Iger with a firery passion because he doesn't allign with how they feel the parks should be run. Mixing up personal preference with how a buisness should be run.
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 7 жыл бұрын
I promise you the same exact people saying things were better under Eisner would've called him the antichrist about 12-15 years ago (or actually did). They'd rather gorge themselves on member berries than live one second in the present.
@cirquedusolielfan
@cirquedusolielfan 7 жыл бұрын
Tony Goldmark And the same people say they just have "a honest, critical view of the parks." When in actuality, they are just being pretenious assholes complaining everytime something happens. Now Iger and the execs would win my full 100% support no matter what if two things happen. A.) We get Alien Encounter back. or B.) Lightcycle Power Run pops up outside of Shanghai. I heard a recent rumor somewhere thats its in a sort of Blue Sky stage right now to come to Epcot? But i dont know how vaild that is especially because Blue Sky is just so vague and random. But if Disney did do either of those things, I would be an incredibly happy little fan who would be satisfied forever.
@ColorTheoryEB
@ColorTheoryEB 7 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's because Iger at one point promised to fix the problem of 2d animation not being marketable, and bring it back into theaters, and never really fulfilled his promise. Maybe they should have probably marketed your 2D films better, instead of putting them against Harry Potter.

With all the stuff they're replacing in this park nowadays, do you think that they'll rename Disney's California Adventure into something else? The more changes I've seen in recent years the less "California" it's seems to be getting (which I don't really mind, seeing that it was rather a silly idea to put a California themed amusement park in the state of California in the first place). If you were to rename this park, what it be?
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 6 жыл бұрын
Frankly, I have no idea. Considering the plans for the forseeable future are to turn the park into a hodgepodge of Pixar, Marvel, old-timey Hollywood/Los Angeles aesthetic, old-timey seaside carnival aesthetic, rural small-town Route 66 aesthetic, woodsy national park aesthetic and a smidge of California here and there...any all-encompassing title would have to be extremely generic. And no matter what happens, DCA will always at least be IN California, so...I guess it's a failsafe.

While I think the Califronia theme was a bad idea, I'm kinda pissed that the park retains that name, as California isn't the focus anymore. The problem's not as bad as Hollywood Studios, but its still noticable. Also I just miss those big letters out front spelling CALIFORNIA and SUPER miss the Golden Gate that the monorail went across. The letters helped build hype outside, and the Golden Gate was just cool.

I really don"t get why people dislike Michael Eisner so much. Granted he was CEO too long, and by the end had too much power but everyone forgets that in the late 80's he basically saved the company with great advances in movies like Little Mermaid, Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast and theme parks with 2 new parks in Florida, 1 new park in California and many others across the world(though apparently the Tokyo Disneyland Resort is not owned by Disney despite being the second most popular theme park in the world behind Magic Kingdom and just ahead of Disneyland Park)He deserves credits for his hits and not just his misses.
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 8 жыл бұрын
+littlejake4 Oh, I agree. And I give him that credit. But it's just fun to make fun of prominent rich people, especially when they fuck up, and ESPECIALLY especially when they have the hubris to presume to be a latter-day Walt Disney and voluntarily get in front of the camera to introduce movies on TV and such. Don't worry about Michael Eisner, he'll be fine.

LOL, I just discovered that if you watched this with auto generated captions enabled, the "droppy thing" is called the "crappy thing." Indeed it was. XD

the new dca isn't as redundant since it's kind of based on early 20th century california. (honestly i enjoy going there over disneyland sometimes...)

Jerk, what are your thoughts on them closing the Aladdin musical in California Adventure
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 8 жыл бұрын
+littlejake4 What, the thing I kept forgetting was even there? Meh. It's certainly not the WORST show I've ever seen at a theme park (that distinction goes to The Eighth Voyage Of Sinbad at Islands Of Adventure), but I won't miss it. And anyway, if a Frozen stage show causes them to close that nearby unforgivably cheap "Sing-Along" horseshit and bring back Muppet*Vision, I'm all for it.

+Tony Goldmark Also their changing soarin from over California to over the world which is pretty cool, you agree ? and also do you think DCA is worthy of the Disney name now with cars land and radiator springs racers ?
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 8 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I wish they would leave DCA's Soarin alone and only change EPCOT's Soarin to "Over the World." DCA's Soarin was the ONE thing about DCA 1.0 that unequivocally worked, and it'd be nice to leave it unchanged. Cars land and RSR are nice...but what REALLY makes DCA worthy of the Disney name now is Buena Vista Street. It finally really feels like you're walking into a DISNEY PARK, and all the detail and immersion that implies, and that makes a world of difference.

+littlejake4 really they are bumping Soarin and Aladdin the Musical? (well to be fair, I'm sure the Broadway version is ten times better)

with the 50th coming up for Disney world, you should do a 50 years of the magic kingdom videos
@TonyGoldmark
@TonyGoldmark 7 жыл бұрын
Not til 2021. And honestly, I'd feel weird about making a "50 Years of the Magic Kingdom" retrospective, partly because the REAL milestone will be the 50th anniversary of Disney World in general, and also because there's literally six different "Magic Kingdom"-type parks in the world - I like my anniversary retrospectives to be on unique parks.
