I have to point out that players returning to the game for an update like PP 2.0 doesnt mean more money for FDev - unless they bought Odyssey (which itself has been on sale on Steam several times for less than what a paint job costs...). A feature overhaul like that requires income. Elite doesnt have tons of new players flocking in with every update, so thats not enough to cover it. 2024 has shown that they seem fairly committed to keep providing more for the game, and in fact they delivered more this year than in the last 5 years COMBINED. If thats the result of this "Pay 2 Win", then thats a price Im willing to pay - even if I think the prices they charge are a bit too high for whats reasonable.

One thing I would have mentioned about Elite is the fact that it was, and arguably still is, THE best implementation of VR in any space game to date, the UI was just perfect, being able to just look at screens to enable them, or to target vessels was pure genius. It was the primary reason why I got Elite in the first place, to go along with my new (at the time) HTC Vive headset. It's just a tragedy how far the game has now fallen, with the utterly disappointing space legs, and the abandonment of console and base/Horizons players. The new ships may have reinvigorated my interest in the game, and enticed me to don my Pimax headset and expand on my already comprehensive fleet of vessels, but these are being denied to us Horizons players UNLESS WE PAY REAL MONEY TO UNLOCK THEM!! "Ah but you can use Arx to obtain them" I hear some pre-pubescent fanboy screaming in the replies, really, when you can only earn 400 Arx per week by playing the game intensively and need ~16,000 for the base vessels (that's 40 weeks!!), yeah, that's never going to be achievable for the majority of casual players. The only update that has been of any value so far has been the increased availability of engineering materials, and that's about it.
@AgyaggalambReloadedКүн бұрын
While I agree, but it's like 14-15 euros for a new ship, it's not ideal, but acceptable IMO especially if you compare that to 40 weeks grind for the in game ARX. For me buying ARX is the only way to support the game as I already have the Lifetime Expansion Pass (well, not the best deal so war with only 2 expansions, but oh well I wanted Elite to live up to it's potential :) ).
@SWATStrachanКүн бұрын
@AgyaggalambReloaded I see your point, but I dread to think of how much I've spent in cosmetics before they switched to Arx, so they've more than had their money out of me already. Ships should not be purchasable items, they are the very core of the game, this is not Star Citizen.

Man, I remember the first time I loaded up this game in 2017, I was absolutely astounded. There truly was nothing like it, and I sunk so many hours getting triple elite. I remember fizzling out a bit, just due to playing my fair chunk and not wanting to engage with engineering outside of FSDs, and then Odyssey was teased. "My God, this is going to be incredible", I thought. And with the release of Odyssey, was the end of my regular playing. I sometimes reinstall ED with the desire to maybe do some bounty hunting, some on foot missions, maybe some exploration, but the horrid launch of Odyssey combined with even more grind being introduced really killed the immense desire to play I once had. I still keep my eye on updates, and who knows, maybe this next big one with colonization will be the thing to bring me back, but at this point, I doubt it. FeelsBadMan.

I get the feeling that the "Rich Gameplay" That Braben mentioned regarding walking inside our ships was not implemented due to the Cobra Engine's limitations. Having a local physics grid is not an easy feature to implement and took Star Citizen many years to do so properly. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm referring to the ability to walk around inside a moving ship. This is why in the Fleet Carriers the player is forced to sit down before it jumps. Can you imagine how janky it would be if the player and crew were forced to sit every time they had to move their ship even slightly? My only glimmer hope for walking around ship interiors these days is due to the fact that all the new ships introduced this year seem to be scaled properly and have ramps that don't look like you'd have to scale up using a rope due to their steep angle.
@williamcat31598 сағат бұрын
Easy enough in theory.. add the ship's vector to your player actor's vector and you're there.. In reality there's a round trip to the server and in that time you've teleported outside the ship.. especially if you're trying to walk round a ship controlled by a 3rd party..

The other channels don't let all the voices speak. They prefer high fives all around. I prefer complete thoughts and full conversations in all directions. I'm happy that you had a chance to explore Elite Dangerous in all its iterations. There has been good and bad. Elite has the potential to climb all the way to the top if they take the time to walk around it in all angles and areas for development. It would benefit greatly by taking those visuals and sounds that make Elite what it is and pair it with the rest of the story and mechanics it needs. Not all needs to be newly created as it is there in some aspects, but logistically Stellar Forge can only do so much with what it has. Cartographics has enough data already for expansion years ago so I'm not sure what they are trying to do with this game, what ultimately is the goal for it, but it can already do so much more with what it already has with a little bit of work. I hope they figure that out or get an offline mode so we can mod it to do it. Always a pleasure to watch you work your content Yamiks. Have fun as usual and enjoy the rest of this year. Next year is already fast approaching with a bunch of prospects to explore galactically.
@CONTINGENCY_sys13 сағат бұрын
You're not a prick, just a passionate gamer that expresses unique vocalization mechanics. A key point that makes for exciting conversations. Good or bad, its always Yamiks blend of business professional and bedroom banter when addressing topics pros and cons that you know isn't one sided when looked at. They can't just have positives as that never improves a space. Negatives only with no logical solutions isn't good either. There is always room for improvements and its those improvements that make awesome games of legend. I know the difference between a problem and a solution. If I was on the development team, I know for a fact Yamiks voice would have relevance in that space. Even monopoly the board game can be cutthroat and table tossing. Even silent games like competitive chess can have eyebrows furl. In Elite we have griefers outside of starter location, and developers not using the full range of their space they took so much time to realize and not use fully. 10 years is 10 years. I've been in Elite for 40 so... ya. It has had some time in the rebuy screen. 400 billion stars not using 400 billion stars when they have the mechanics to make things happen with Stellar Forge. But they chain her up, permit lock, and keep on saying its so great to each other while they walk past "hey I have a fix ticket can you address this" or "this isn't as great as it could be can you do this". Over time those polite conversations change to more direct ones like "this sucks" or "what the H... is wrong with them". I mean its progressive. Day one to day 3,650 is a big time duration. If they didn't that is on them. Not for lack of our attempt to assist in development over the years. Some things they listened too but did they really. I go back to those development and beater modes, the community saying, asking, pleading, and what grains of salt happened. Space legs are like little infant steps after a point the you just want to pick them up, put them in the stroller and ride that thing down the hill at full speed like a shopping cart scooting across the parking lot on one leg scooter. But we are still here. We just won't let Elite die. Refuse.

I bought Elite, way back in the day, before Horizons and put it down for Star Citizen, because SC had faster flight and cooler ships. Years later, now, Star Citizen is still a mess and they've removed the one thing I enjoyed that kept me coming back; fast and nimble flight. So, recently, I've started playing Elite: Dangerous. A lot. As a Star Refugee, I didn't mind shelling out $15 for a Base Model Mandalay. I've paid more for worse. But, I didn't want to fly the Sidewinder, my Eagle had no jump range and I didn't want to save up for a decent ship to make decent sized jumps because that's not the kind of ship I want to play, for the most part. So, I did enjoy just being able to buy it, just so I could travel to the places that I couldn't get to before. If they had released them in game, for credits, at the same time as in the Arx store, I wouldn't have any problems with buying ships. But, that's not how they did it, which kinda sucks. Also, I have to say that I'm fine with abandoning consoles. Consoles can't keep up. They're outdated upon release. Let's not slow down the cars because it makes the horses feel bad. I want a game that simply cannot be played on consoles because of the sheer complexity. However, that would assume that it's the complexity keeping it off of consoles and not the piss-poor optimization. Which is a generous, and inaccurate assumption, on my part.

10 years, wow. i come and go with the grind, every new update brings another grind and if you are behind on the gameplay none of the "new" content is available without another massive grind. I just dont get it, grind over monetisation and they choose grind. I would like to play more but the amount of time you must put in for very little reward is really frustrating. Take the suit upgrade grind for example, there are requirements that you cant trade anything for in return, an example would be manufacturing instructions. I actually returned after seeing a video from the devs about how they changed the engineering aspect to make it easier upgrading and engineering items like suits etc and if thats easier i would hate to see how it was, at least if you had done it at the start you could farm materials using guides on youtube but i think the devs also watched these videos because now if you log out and come straight back the material you want to farm is gone so if you need say 100 manufacturing instructions you must wait for one specific mission being available but that one specific mission spawns 6 or 7 variables of that mission that never gives a reward you need or that cant be easily found or traded for. You collect things on foot that have no purpose other than clogging up your inventory forcing you to create spreadsheets and lists of what you need for what upgrade, where to get it etc. Gaming is supposed to be fun but i feel the devs overcomplicate an already overcomplicated game and that drives away so many players. I might play for a month then come back in 6 months play for a month etc.

Sad as it is, it seems selling ships for real money was the right move. We were all ready for the game to go on permanent maintenance mode before, the game was underperforming and it seemed they were just gonna shelve it; but now things are really moving again. The Thargoid War is hitting a major breaking point, Powerplay is actually worth engaging with now, SCO Drives are amazing, the new ships are sweet, engineering is conistent, cheaper, materials are more plentiful, and player driven colonization is coming up. Whether we wanted it or not, the cash shop saved this game from the downward spiral that was sending it directly into the trash.

Hurts to say, but the fact that there's no offline mode is why I've sworn off Elite Dangerous. If/When they eventually kill the game I don't want to be blindsided.
@SabiJDКүн бұрын
I think it's still worth playing in the here and now. I probably won't ever touch it again as I'm on console, but for anyone on PC who hasn't played it, who might like its very particular flow and vibe, I'd still recommend it.
@jaredpilbeam6988Күн бұрын
@SabiJD I think so if someone has never played it. And of course, I understand that people enjoy the vibe and atmosphere, it's just that for me personally I'd rather break clean from it now than when they decide to shut everything down a la The Crew. Man... heartbreaking to hear what they did to all y'all on console. 07.
@SabiJDКүн бұрын
@@jaredpilbeam6988 An offline mode would be ideal, absolutely. But how feasible is it, given it's literally a galactic scale set of combined data points? And what made their lie/'betrayal' about Odyssey on console was just how much I'd supported the game since it appeared on Xbox, initially. I played Frontier as a kid - it was an amazing experience, despite me barely able to make any progress... It just had a sense of magic to it. ED really did make good on the potential of that experience. I still love what Elite was at its most popular and interesting. I was mostly an explorer, and landing on a fast orbiting world right next to a neutron star will probably remain one of my all time gaming highlights. Utterly unique - especially as I'd discovered that system. Or the time I traveled 18K out from the Sol bubble on my first deep sortie. I got to my destination, aaaaaand crashed on touchdown... (it was a 0.05G moon, no less) I didn't feel rage, or even much frustration at all the scan data I lost. It was just kinda funny... given worse conditions I'd landed many times before, it was an endearing reminder that Elite had a bit of Dark Souls in it; mostly, if you screwed up, it was your fault. You did something. Ergo you could learn and improve. I think I may've changed ships (yes, from a Cobra III to a DBX), but either way I let it lie for a day or so, then just headed straight back out again to the same spot. Or the time I took a frikkin' 'deep space miner' Type 9 out beyond the bubble, just because I wanted to mine the rings of a brace of worlds (only one was landable) who were both still within the refuelling atmosphere of their immense star. Just for the experience, just for the visuals and atmosphere. So yeah, I'll love what Elite used to be. But I've never felt so--- I dunno, insulted, spurned, letdown, etc by a game company before. When Odyssey was announced *for consoles as well*, I was immediately looking forward to the moments where I'd touch down and set foot on certain worlds I'd discovered, that had become a part of my 'story' since starting the game. I was fine with consoles lagging behind on the release, but the way they all handled that was just gutless. I feel it was just incompetence of project management - they didn't intend any malice. But intent doesn't really matter when you've announced something is coming to your system, and after many months it becomes clear they're abandoning it. Love Elite at its height, kinda loathe FDev's hierarchy, though.

Oh my god, I remember the old days when I was overly excited by the early videos of Elite Dangerous. It was the space game of my dreams, the one I had always been searching for! Eventually, I succumbed to the temptation to buy it and joined during the Beta 2 phase, before the official release. The game was absolutely gorgeous back then, and I spent countless hours playing it! I even bought a HOTAS and a TrackIR to be fully immersed in this game! But yeah, after Horizons, this was the moment I truly felt disappointed. Engineering was annoying and tedious, I didn’t care at all about the Thargoids, and the big grind required to be fully equipped with anti-Thargoid weapons was frustrating. Odyssey was the final nail in the coffin that made me quit the game. And the rank grinding was so abysmal that I still don’t have the required rank to buy the Federal Corvette.

I miss Elite. But i still have my beloved X4. Please, anyone who reads this, go and try X4. Its on GOG so its even DRM Free and comes with a 30 day refund policy no questions asked! Try it yo-ho style if you must, but please buy it from the devs and not off key-sites. These people put genuine heart and soul into the game and i want to see them soar. I put almost 2K hours into Elite and had such a blast. But i can't support them going down the path of FOMO. Its one thing to offer buyable ships, its become so ubiquitous in this age that its harder to find a company who does not do that sort of crap. But i cannot abide FOMO. Time limited BS is the bane of gaming. We gamers cannot support every game 24/7. It become a job instead of a hobby.

I really enjoyed the video, however I will say the the real money prebuilt ships are not pay to win. It’s more pay to play now and skip the grind for components. There’s no advantage to purchasing these prebuilt ships other than preserving time. The zero rebuy is a nice perk but it’s not gonna make or break a player. If purchasing one of these ships aids in progressing the game in a way that you could not otherwise do then that would be “pay to win.” The only advantage you actually get is skipping the grind for whatever path you want to go down with your ship build and having free rebuy. If they locked progression behind paid content, then that would be another story. Otherwise great video and a fun contrast to the 10 year video FDev put out this morning.
