the fact that you're a weaker character in ODST, often needing to scavenge ammo and health packs is only exacerbated by the fact that if you play through the story in one go, you have to survive Mombasa streets for a long time, and that is imo the most interesting part of it. every time you blow through a clip, or some health in a firefight going to an objective, you'll be weaker until you can find a better weapon on the road, or some way to heal yourself.
@LeanMan822 жыл бұрын
Its crazy to say that Halo CE was not the exact same experience. Halo 2/3 really screwed up the mechanic. In Halo CE, you also had to scavenge for weapons and health packs, often times wanting to play COOP with your friends because you can use respawns to spawn with a plasma pistol and then use that and a pistol to take out a insurmountable amount of dropships that just suddenly decided to come one after the other. The plasma pistol/pistol combo still seems like a staple here too. Halo ODST seems like the way Halo CE sequel should have been made gameplay wise. On the note of trying to decide to engage vs not engaging, that was in Halo CE too for the new gamer. It was satisfying to engage but I still remember avoiding alerting the enemy and trying to back smack my way as much as possible before the enemy knew I was in their patrolling area. All elements of Halo ODST are in Halo CE. No film noir present in Halo CE... well except 343 Guilty Spark mission when the game reveals the Flood.

@@LeanMan82 I know I'm late, but I love your comment! I recently went back and replayed CE, and I realized how different it really is from 2 and 3. I'm currently replaying ODST on my way through the series in chronological order. Halo 3: ODST is to the Halo series what Rogue One is to Star wars. It sets aside the grand heroic adventures, and looks at the characters normally in the background, who face real danger constantly. It's practically perfect apart from the slightly unnatural movement of the characters because they didn't use mo-cap (I think). The opening cutscene is my favorite cutscene in any game ever, because the first time I played it, it sucked me right into the universe and told me exactly what this game was going to be in the coolest way possible. Going into it, I thought "Okay, maybe this game will be about a team helping Master Chief during Halo 3. That's cool. Alright, an ODST drop, that's awesome. Maybe we're dropping onto the Ark from Forward Unto Dawn. Oh, that's the trashed fleet in orbit after the invasion in Halo 2.. wait, is that the space elevator in New Mombassa? OH, that's the Supercarrier right there! Are we gonna land on that and have to sneak around inside the ship the whole game? ...Nope, there it goes. Oh, shockwave... that's not good.. Oh that's not good at all!" I can't even begin to describe how well that scene pulled me into both the universe, and the mindset of the Rookie. And things happening as the game progresses, like seeing the space elevator collapse, or watching the city get glassed... So fantastically immersive. I will say I like the firefight in Reach better, because I don't like the infinite survival type of thing, I prefer for there to be a win scenario, even if it's crazy difficult, and in Reach you can set a limit..

This was by far one of my favourite games in the Halo Franchise, the story, music and setting was awesome. Plus it was a memorable midnight launch, I skipped out on the other big titles at the time. Plus excellent video and channel mate, you’ve just earned another sub 😁

I fucking love Halo 3: ODST and Reach. I loved playing as a stealthy boi with suppressed guns in ODST.

Happy birthday, Halo 3 ODST! Loved playing for the first time, even though I was too young to understand what a masterpiece this was. Music still gives me chills when I hear it. Also, we were introduced to the best characters ever. Dutch, Romeo, Buck, Mickey, (in my opinion, he's not the worst yet), and Rookie. RIP. Was more depressed about him than Noble. Rest in peace and quiet, buddy. You deserved more.

Halo 3 ODST was such a vibe game. I remember when I got it and the musical scores played so well with the coming autumn. Truly a lovely work, exposing the harsh conditions that the most advanced, un-augmented humans had to endure was insane. Playing as Rookie was truly the best. Roaming through the late night, all on your own. Where my fellow Rookies at? Edit: ODST Firefight was a struggle, more of a true fight for survival. FFs as a Spartan was more of a slaughter till you got blown up.

I honestly loved the ODST story. I was somewhat unhappy to know many of my friends disliked it. Watching this video though has given me more insight to story itself.

Ani Prophet Bear same here i got a 360 just for ODST and I love it got it late 2010 and a couple years back my house flooded but I got a new copy I found a year later and I just jumped in messed around then off to legendary so far this is the only game I completed a legendary play through it’s just so fun and it’s incredible how difficult it is it even got annoying until the moment I finally passed all the odds and survived and it makes sense because you are a regular person with just a few augmentations so it’s fare but extremely unforgiving to your mistakes but that’s part of the charm

In my opinion. Best opening level in all of Halo. It even has my favorite soundtrack...but I'm a sucker for smooth jazz, rainy nights, and noir stories so...ODST is tailor made for a guy like me. On top of that it has my favorite version of the Magnum and SMG, I love ODST to bits.

Odst is one of my all time favorites after halo 3 and Reach. But what really got to me was the soft jazz. The first time I heard that smooth jazz on the empty streets of New Mombasa I was stunned for a moment... it was beautiful

Your comment about how the story can be cut into two halves is also true for the soundtrack, certain songs are dedicated to the rookie, (Deference for Darkness, Neon Night, Asphalt and Ablution) and other songs are made for the squad as a whole (The Menagerie, Traffic Jam, The Office Of Naval Intelligence). And then in the last few songs, they tie those styles together, and even add a theme or two from Halo 3, which grounds the impact of the story in the wider universe as well.

Hidden, never have you failed to add that extra bit of pizazz to make your videos perfect. Love ODST, after experiencing it I've longed for a game where you're a simple marine. ODSTs are still near the peak of human capabilities, elite soldiers in their own right. If being an ODST felt that good, surely being even more helpless as a simple Marine too has it's appeal...

You know, there was this moment in my legendary play through where I was stuck between a patrol and a pair of Hunters while on my way to Kizingo Boulevard, I messed up and I was Detected, so I ran, I could hear the heavy footfalls of the Hunters chasing after me, the grunts firing their needlers at me...OH MY GOD the sense of relief I felt when the Door opened JUST in time so I could slip through was amazing, turning back one of the Hunters was RIGHT behind me and I just started nervously laughing as the door closed. Damn ODST is amazing for making me feel that.

Whenever I replay a halo game the one game I'm always really happy and enthusiastic to play is halo 3 ODST The lack of flood and the idea of you are being hunted, you aren't the threat but only a survivor using the shadows to fight the endless dropships as you run through the darkness searching for your squad and finding audio logs and graffiti really setting in that the humans are on the brink of destruction with the mellow jazz music making it seem sad and painful is perfect for the setting A masterpiece of a game and will forever be my favourite halo game

The plight of humanity that you experience in ODST/Reach was the peak of Halo's storytelling. It was just so much more visceral and emotional to see wartorn cityscapes, dark skies, planet glassing, and human vulnerability. I agree as you say, it was art.

I was given this game in 2011 when I had moved to Germany back then. I had no friends, the area I lived in was old, dark and gray and often rainy. This game has such an impactful amount of nostalgia for me. I related to the Rookie so much when I'd walk around my town with abandoned buildings and empty streets in the evening. Of course, I also listen to the music often. Even getting the ODST soundtrack.
