It would be understatement to call you entertaining , you are giving out priceless advise on what we can purchase , collect and know what to seek for and value , something that you mentioned will be CLASSIC as is Classic music in 50 or even 100 years and further in the vast space of time. That just went right thru my body and mind , how I can collect these and one day ,hopefully my grandkids would find out they have an absolute pieces of art at their disposal. My first pressing of Pink Floyd's Division Bell I bought at 13 in 1994 has been played at least 50 times. It still sounds pristine. No crackles, surface noise, skips or anything. I wanted to be different and I was tired of loaning out tapes or CD's and them coming back ruined. So I switched to vinyl for a lot of albums or bought LP's of albums I really liked. Lots of 90's first pressings. My father taught me how to care for vinyl, how to store it, how to clean it and how to love it. This man (Analog Planet) knows what he's talking about. Great video!

That must be an incredible collection. Everyone wants those original 90s pressings now, but few wanted them then. I don't have to tell you, haha. Was it hard to find vinyl retailers back then?

I remember how I treated my records as a teenager and I cringe ! All those great and now very rare records by forgotten bands at a time when independent labels were springing up everywhere but pressing only a few thousand or even hundreds of copies , for me to throw them around carelessly, drop the stylus on with a thunk , find people putting coffee cups on them ( not me , I was never that bad ) . I’m sure many of us have done the same and only now as we’ve realized the true value of them as representing a time and place as well as great music , do we wish we had been more careful . Perhaps not having the higher quality equipment as a teenager we accepted the bad sound quality as a normal thing and that one more scratch wouldn’t matter too much ( until it jumped every five seconds) . I now treat my albums with far more respect and care like a much loved but formerly under appreciated girlfriend ! I , perhaps like you , have a lot of CDs but tend to use them as a casual music session , keeping the rarer , better quality vinyl albums for the days I want to really listen to the music . Perhaps because one is forced to get up at the end of the record , we listen far more and pay more attention to what’s being played , unlike the “ swipe left “ music of streaming and play and forget CDs we can’t be so inattentive, vinyl music demands we pay attention or suffer the consequences in thst terrible “ Kerr tick ,Kerr tick “ or worse , the “ sceeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr” sound of a stylus being beaten up !

You are bang on about the wearing out Michael. I listen and play old soul and reggae - mainly 45s. Most of these have been bought and sold many times and been used at various gigs / parties etc. Still going strong and I would never swap vinyl for other formats ever. I do try whenever possible to purchase original pressings as I've found these do sound better and louder in most cases than represses/bootlegs etc. ( and Obviously worth more ) When it comes to some of them ( especially the soul tracks ) the originals are silly money, especially if some bright spark considers it to be of the Northern variety when there's always another zero wacked on the price for good measure! Great channel. Checking in from the UK 👍

I LOVED watching this video! I am certainly going to purchase some of these albums. I appreciate this man, with all of his immense experience, sharing this with us. What a journey! I heard that Duke Ellington record (the first album he showed) at a "vinyl night" at the local hi-fi shop. One Friday a month people could take 5 records, have them cleaned, and listen to a few tracks on their big system with beautiful Wilson speakers. They put the Ellington record on but didn't change the speed to 45. Believe it or not, it still sounded amazing! It was like some avant-garde piece! Once they corrected the speed, I was blown away. I really appreciate Michael Fremer. I think he makes so much sense in his approach to appreciating music and the equipment it is played on (though I am still a little skeptical about power cords). I really value what he has to say.

@jmdavison624 жыл бұрын
"This will sound better. I'm quite convinced." For some notions of better, at least. Like "it's better if you hear a lot of sibilance distortion" and "it sounds better if you watch the record spin around and around." There's plenty of sibilance distortion on that crappy-sounding copy of _Tommy_. That said, it's great to hear this guy talk about music that he obviously knows and loves, and we're better off for it. But if you're looking for evidence that vinyl sounds better than 16-bit 44.1 kHz, or even the lossy compression that KZbin has imposed on this video, you're not going to find it in this video.

Thank you Michael, sincerely. I just finished my first listening of Duke's Masterpieces and it is scary good. It isn't often that I experience the "disappearing stereo" with my humble Pro-Ject Essential, but it happened with this one. I have to agree, even after one listening, it is one of the greatest recordings ever made. The only thing more amazing than the fact that it was recorded 70 years ago and sounds perfect is the stunning musicianship, numerous tender moments and virtuosity from tenor sax, clarinet, and Duke himself on piano (and all the instruments - - bass, bone, trumpet, etc.).

However, not all of us were blessed with the wealth to have a $1000 turntable at age 16 when i purchased "Tommy". i struggled just to have the cash to buy albums, skipping what was popular so i could have what others didn't. (No Beatles for me) i did have the changer, a GE no less. i quickly learned not to stack. Surprisingly. most LPs withstood the abuse quite nicely, which helps support your statement that vinyl lasts more than two plays. Most all are still in rotation today.

That Tommy record - even though its just on KZbin i can already tell after just a few seconds that its mixed and recorded so well! All the instruments can be located easily on their stage in front of you! The music just fills my room and rushes through my body in waves - and i'm NOT listening loud at all right now! My actual super-budget-music setup is pretty simple and a perfect example for a very audiophile result without spending more than 300 Dollars / Euros! Front Speakers: Yamaha NS-G40 MK2 (used in Germany for about 40-60 Euros a pair) They're about 3,2 meters apart from each other, positioned parallel directly and almost next to the wall (2-3 centimeters space) with about 30 centimeters of space to the back wall. On top of those Yamaha speakers i have positioned a pair of Yamaha NX-E100 veeeery slightly angled towards my listening position - but really, veeery slightly. This can - of course - differ by your own room's acoustic. I have carpet in the whole room and normal wallpapers - on one side i even have a window without curtains (uh, what a sin for an audiophile, eh?). Fun fact: It doesnt matter if you would use NX-E100, NX-E200, NX-E400 or NX-E800 speakers, they're all sounding exactly the same, they're just design-wise slightly different from each other. Dont mix em up with NX-E150, NX-E300 or NX-E700 - those are the smaller ones with just 11cm (4,5 inch) mid-woofers and they're a little weak in the lower frequencies especially at higher volume. Those smaller Yamaha-speakers (used) also change their owner in great conditions for about 40-60 Euros a pair here in Germany - just a month ago i got my trillionth pair of NX-E800's for just 40 Euros in their original package! So, we're actually at a budget of just 100-120 Euros and already have massively underrated but audiophile-wise absolutely astonishing speakers. What do we need now? An Amplifier. I tried many and i will try many more, but one of my best budget buys so far for stereo reproduction (but still with many more functionality on board) is the Yamaha RX-V1000RDS - bought it couple of weeks ago in Frankfurt am Main for just 60 Euros. There are even better amplifiers for stereo-sound, no question about it (for example my Denon AVR-X4000) but for such a low price you will have to search for a very long time for an amplifier that doesnt just cost about 60 Euros, but also has a fantastic D/A-converter (i used toslink from a Panasonic BD-player as a CD-player) and can also be used as a surround amplifier. Just to point out, the two speaker-pairs are connected to "Front A" and "Front B" on the Yamaha RX-V1000RDS. No, there are NO phase-problems with the two tweeters. NO, there's no over-volume/unwanted addition (what is it called exactly in english?) from having double mids and heights. I have NOT touched the Equalizer or used any other trickery at all! Just adjusted the left/right-volume a tiny bit because of my room's acoustics (left channel is lowered for -2dB) - that's it! So, what do we have now? 150-170 Euros, spend the other 30 Euros on not too shabby speaker wires (2x2,5mm² a couple meters and banana-plugs if you plan to "switch and test" as much stuff as i do). Et voila: 200 Euros (without a cd player or turntable) and you have a great setup that does definitely get you into the starting zone of very high quality stereo sound from where you can start to get the feeling of what can be made even better and what already is a thousand times better than anything you would get out of a new 500, 1000 or even 2000 Euro-setup, depending on the stuff you would buy with that money. Sure, there's always space for improvement, no question about it, but for 200 Euros, i just cannot stress this enough... for just 200 Euros, EVERYONE who loves listening to music, CAN definitely start out calling himself an audiophile high end music listener/lover.

I have the Columbia Legacy mono 2x45 RPM 2015 reissue of "Blonde On Blonde" cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, and I think it sounds phenomenal. Also have the MoFi mono 2x45 2016 reissue of "Highway 61 Revisited" and yes, it's an incredibly great product. Thank you for this informative video, Mr. Fremer!

ALWAYS take excellent care of your records. You'll be rewarded with sublime bliss for years to come. I knew people who actually had their records on the floor outside the sleeves and were stepped on. Some people I just can't figure out.

Love these videos and hope you and the stereophile gang keep making them. Finally, we live in times when nothing is doomed to be lost history - but only if knowledgeable people like you take the time and effort to tell the stories - so, thank you! Though, I think I can speak for everyone in asking: How could you fail to include the first stereo pressing of the Insane Clown Posse's debut album on this list? (j/k, of course)

Dammit! I just bought a PS Audio power re-generator this week and swore I wasn't going to spend any more money on music or equipment this month. I'm only half way through the video and my shopping cart on elusive disk has completely blown out of all reasonable proportion. Great video, thanks for your time.

Great choices and stellar reviews. Thanks so much for doing this. Two hours well spent. Oh, and I learned something! I have an OP of Joni Mitchell's Blue that I got super cheap in a bulk buy. Although it appeared to be in excellent condition, I was shocked and disappointed to find that the audio on the first track was only coming through one channel. The record looked ok, so I figured it might be some kind of groove damage, so I shelved it. I guess it's a collectors item now?

Just a quick tip for you... what I do with my vinyls is store the original sleeve inside the cover, slip the cover upright into a cover protector, put the vinyl into a rounded bottom vinyl protector, then slide that into the cover plastic on the backside of the cover so the opening is facing sideways. This does 3 things: makes it easy to pull out the vinyl to play it, keeps dust from getting into the vinyl sleeve, and saves wear and tear on the cover since it no longer needs to be opened.

The recording: the composition, performance, technique and skill of the engineers at each step of the recording, mixing, and mastering processes, all audibly matter heads and shoulders above format(vinyl vs CD, analog vs digital, etc), and for that matter how much one spends on playback equipment, amplification, interconnects, power supply, etc.
