Not a bad list from RS. Personally I prefer Hello Nasty over Ill Communication when it comes to Beastie Boys, it might inspire a future song request on Patreon

I'm one of those people who's a fan of the 60s and 70s, and also the 90s which is probably my favorite decade in music, however I can't say I enjoy much from the 80s. So many good stuff here : Liz Phair, Smashing Pumpkins, Fiona Apple, R.E.M., Sinéad O'Connor, Björk, Rolling Stones, Portishead, Alanis Morissette, Jeff Buckley, Mary J. Blige, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Massive Attack, Tom Waits, Janet Jackson, Radiohead, Madonna, PJ Harvey... since you're more of a rock guy I'd really suggest checking out "Exile In Guyville" by Liz Phair, it's probably one of the best indie rock albums of the 90s. I do have to say the lack of Little Earthquakes on this list is outrageous

I agree that If I was going to own one Tori Amos album, it would be Little Earthquakes. I think I bought about her first four or five records.

Not a bad list. I've expected worse. Just one Björk album isn't enough, Debut and Homogenic were both fantastic albums. Glad they had Portishead. Madonnas Ray of Light was great, one of her best. Did I miss Alice in Chains?

Queen - Innuendo Should be in the top 5, but then again it's Rolling Stone. =] These lists say more about the current compilers than about the music at that time. Which is also interesting. =)

I have quite a few Moby albums..love his music....alot of his sales/proceeds go towards animal/environmental rights/causes, which make me love him even more. Can't stand Manson either Larry. One album I wore out back in the day was Hootie and The Blowfish...don't have it anymore tho, burned myself out on it haha. Love R.E.M., Pearl Jam, and U2 too. Candlebox debut album is another one of my favorites from the 90's.

Nirvana's Unplugged is my favorite thing they ever did. I also love Fiona Apple (When the Pawn is the best), Magnetic Fields, Smashing Pumpkins... also I'm a big fan of No Code as well. I think it's the most underrated Pearl Jam album easily. 5/5 for me

Out of that list of a 100, I only have 10 of those in my CD collection: 95 - Nirvana - 'Unplugged In New York' 83 - Fiona Apple - 'Tidal' 75 - Belle and Sebastian - 'If You're Feeling Sinister' 68 - R.E.M. - 'Out of Time' 45 - Alanis Morrisette - 'Jagged Little Pill' 19 - Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Blood Sugar Sex Magic' 9 - Beck - 'Odelay' 7 - Nirvana - 'In Utero' 6 - Pearl Jam - 'Ten' 1 - Nirvana - 'Nevermind' There are some albums in that top 100 list I would still like to get.

I felt that something changed when the 90's came. On the top of my head it's mainly R.E.M. that comes to mind with the 90's. And the Sexy MF album by Prince which still is among my favorite Prince albums. I did buy Nirvana CD's but I completely lost interest after a while. I do still have that Wyclef Jean CD and even though I don't listen to it anymore I still find it memorable enough to hold onto it. R.E.M. Out Of Time is great. Texarkana is my favorite song on that album but it took many years before I realised what a great song that is. But the whole album is perfect. Mike Oldfield had some nice albums in the 90's. Yes too. I like Depeche Mode and got a lot by them but seldom listen anymore to them. I would say my favorite song by them is on that Violator album, which is Enjoy The Silence. I like the Blackmore's Night album Shadow Of The Moon. I had and may still have that Fugees CD. It was my short interest in hip hop. I like the Dire Straits album from the 90's. Enya is nice. I like Leevi And The Leavings from Finland. I like Indochine from France who also had some good 90's albums. King Crimson Thrak is good. I like the Orme album by Le Orme from 1990 but I may be the only Le Orme fan who like it. I bought R.E.M. Automatic For The People when it came out and have always loved that album. It's a completely perfect album. It could just as well have been named Greatest Hits. Maybe The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite is my favorite on it, but it used to be Find The River at first. Nonsuch by XTC is good and it may have been the first album I bought by them but it's long since I've listened to it now. I still got that Lauryn Hill CD, it's related to Fugees and Wyclef Jean. I doubt that number one is any of those albums I already mentioned that still hasn't been on that list. Ok I should have know it would be Nevermind. There had already been two others, and obviously Nevermind was their main album. Overall the 90's are not too memorable for me even though I did discover a lot of older albums during that decade.

Haha. At the start of the 1990s, instead of listening to ''my generation's" music, I was exploring classic rock of the 1960s and 1970s (mostly Beatles, Chicago, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, ELO) and then moved on almost exclusively to trad and classic jazz by the mid-1990s. Nowadays, 1990s music holds my interest only where they are by female artists (or female fronted bands) - Siouxsie Sioux, Suzanne Vega, Jewel, Emiliana Torrini, Bjork, Tori Amos, Aimee Mann, En Vogue, Portishead etc.... and not forgetting some thrash and death metal of the early 1990s.

Despite the fact a lot of this is you saying you've not listened to these albums I still find it very interesting since a lot of the time you're talking about the albums and songs you do like, it's nice in a different way. I myself haven't heard a lot of these and I totally agree with the whole not loving Oasis thing, Pulp are my favourite britpop band and would definitely recommend giving Different Class a listen if you have the time. My personal favourite from the 90's is probably Souvlaki by Slowdive.

The 90s was an incredible decade. While the 70s is usually regarded as the best decade in music, the 90s had so much more variety and all the main genres were in top form. Rock was having its last great decade (grunge, alt rock, britpop, metal, etc) and hair metal is gone. Hiphop and R&B was finally in the mainstream. Electronic music was becoming very interesting and there were plenty of new subgenres and sounds. Plenty of singer songwriter and country/folk music that got revived (after getting shelved in the 80s). Plenty of world music in the mainstream scene. Music videos and unplugged acts was everywhere. There’s no other decade with such diversity - male or female, white or black, band or solo, rock or rap, english or non english

Yo Lo Tengo is from my hometown Hoboken, New Jersey. They sound like Sonic Youth. They have a new album out. Fugazi was a favorite of mine from back then. Not on the list. Also The Rollins Band. Saw them. Saw Soundgarden here in Hoboken. Chris crowd surfed right over me. Awesome show. They blew the sound board and played a couple of Acoustic songs and the show ended early but great show. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.. Love them. Jane's Addiction I saw. Love them. Lots of hardcore shows and mosh pit shows back then. Fun time. I played bass in a band called The Shitbirds fronted by April March.. April Shitbird on the album. You may know her from the song Chick Rabbit which she did a few years later after we broke up.

I agree with their #1. "Nevermind" is in my all-time Top 10 albums. I can still listen to Nirvana, despite what happened to Kurt Cobain. I just watched their "MTV Unplugged" DVD last night. This is around the 30th anniversary of the airing of that concert, and unfortunately, Kurt's death. I agree that it's hard to separate those two. That concert, and a few song clips from it, were on TV a lot in 1994. I think it's the best "MTV Unplugged" concert.

Enjoyed your walkthrough of those. I’m a few years younger than you just like five years younger but that’s around the same point I started losing my interest so much in new artists. Part of it I think is other parts of life start demanding more attention like work and things, just became overwhelming to try and keep up with new artists a lot of whom I didn’t really love their energy. I have the same opinion on the Rolling Stones at that point…actually I probably began rejecting them in the 80s after absolutely loving all their 60s/70s work. I will have to look at your videos on the “best of” 80s and 70s. How many milk crates of vinyl do you still have? my oldest brother has probably 30 feet? Or more-next time I visit him I’m going to have to take a serious look. I currently have dwindled down to very few CDs in my possession and have gone entirely minimalist/online. when I visit my oldest brother who still has a turntable that he uses and some nice big speakers it’s definitely a treat. But I will probably never go back to that set up. Have a nice week.

I bought 26 of these albums; almost bought about 25 more. At the time, my favourite artists included, U2, R.E.M., Beck, Counting Crows, Oasis, Wilco. I think I like 90s music now, even more than I did at the time, because during the time I was also listening to a lot of classic rock and older music. There was always a lot of rubbish in the pop charts, but now looking back at the best albums, it really was a great decade with a lot of diversity. There are many more great albums from the 90s that RS have not mentioned here.

Well, it’s funny that I had two half decade long relationships in the 90s, both with music fans. That kind of influences your taste…especially when you share a small apartment and kind of have to agree on music. So there are bands on here my partners hated, so I either didn’t really check them out or didn’t play much until after I was single again. During the first half of the 90s, I listened to R.E.M., a lot of grunge bands, and some hip hop. During the second half, I worked in a record store and gave up on most of the newer bands. So on this list, I owned all the Nirvana albums, several Soundgarden, Vitalogy, I think I had Actung Baby, all the R.E.M. albums, The Pixies, The Breeders, De La Soul, Beck, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Billy Bragg and Wilco, Wilco, Bjork, Sinead O’Connor, Liz Phair, PJ Harvey, A Tribe Called Quest, Radiohead, Buena Vista Social Club, TLC, Nas, Missy Elliot. I had Pavement albums but really never got into them. I was kind of neutral on Smashing Pumpkins. I have Lucinda Williams and Tom Petty now but didn’t then…didn’t get back into Petty until he was doing his radio show on Sirius FM. I never cared that much for Oasis or Weezer. Flaming Lips I’m somewhat neutral on, I like the Pink Robots album. I am sad they left off Elliott Smith, though I understand why he’s hard to listen to too. I really liked Suzanne Vega’s 90s albums, and Sonic Youth, Screaming Trees, TAD, Mudhoney, Gas Huffer, Afghan Whigs. I liked The Presidents of the United States of America and The Posies. As far as Britpop, most I didn’t buy but I like Blur, Pulp, Elastica and Supergrass.

As someone whose musical taste was developed in / defined by the 90s and owns about 85% of this (typically oddball) RS list... I very much enjoyed the video! Hearing you say "nope" for so many artists I love was somehow very funny. So many different artists and (sub-)genres got a (brief) place in the sun, it seemed there was always something new around the corner! Alas, some horrible stuff too, like nu-metal... *yuck* BUT every decade has its blemishes right? And while I lost interest in the charts during the 90s, I discovered a whole new musical universe "underground". Have you ever listened to the self-titled debut album by the La's from 1990 Larry? I BET you'd like that one! You could call it Beatlesque... And Slater Kitty just released a new album! 😀

I love the 90s but I only have around 30 of these albums… I shouldn’t be surprised because it is RS. They have two Nirvana albums in the top ten - not bad for a magazine that hated Nirvana. My favourite albums from the list are Dummy, Grace, Post, The Downward Spiral, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Ten, Nevermind, In Utero, Superunknown and both Rage Against the Machine albums. I prefer Use Your Illusion 1 to 2. I can’t stand Oasis and Weezer. Most overrated album from the 90s is Achtung Baby. The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan albums are good.

Musically speaking, the '90s were not my decade. The only albums I have from this list are the self-titled Metallica album and the Johnny Cash album. That was the decade when I started buying a lot of blues and jazz CDs. P.S. - I understand someone from your town, Tom Cole, has challenged Jimmy Kimmel for the honorary mayor's position of the town of Dildo. Not sure if that's a good thing, but it's very seldom that we here in the States hear the town of Bellville Ontario mentioned.

What's the use of your comment? It's more or less NO to all that albums that makes the 90's one of the most interesting decades for me in the history of pop music. It's the decade where all kind of styles come together: alternative rock/indie/hiphop/nu-soul/dance/electronic/folktronica and many more. Step out of your music-bubble and explore the 90's. You will be surprised!

I was a teenager at the start of grunge and was immersed with the decades music and played a lot of it in bands, but I don’t listen to any of it anymore. A lot of it came from a dark place or meant to be ironic. I would never suggest anyone gravitate to Nirvana. Pretty dark. Stick to the 60-80’s.

That ranking was crap. Predictable, but crap. Nirvana is probably the most overrated band of all time. All those (c)rap albums sound the same. Someone yelling over a drum machine isn't music. Blur put out several masterpieces in the 90s but they aren't on the list. Sloan put out great albums in the 90s too. How about Flaming Pie. Supergrass put out great music then too. That list was just the best selling albums. Not the same as best. Was that Rolling Stone? Seems like the sort of crap they would do.
