I would recommend "They Called Us Enemy" by George Takei. Graphic novel/ memoir about the internment of Americans of Japanese descent during the 1940s. Also "Glorious Boy" by Amy Liu. It's a WWII book set in India, which is rarely the focus of any books about WWII.

As someone who reads widely like you, I love all the different books you recommend. Can't wait to try some of them that I haven't read yet! Edit: so glad to hear you mention Genesis Begins Again! Just met the author last week at my library and she's amazing! Just read her newest book mid-air and am recommending it to so many people.

22:06 i feel like one of the biggest reasons why titantic is so much more well known as a maritime tragedy is because a lot of wealthy white people died. it was a new ship that had poor people working overtime to keep it running and a lot of wealthy people boarded it to see and experience something new and shiny.

Great list as always, Ashley! The one book I would push everyone to read before they die is: “What Strange Paradise” by Omar El Akkad. It’s about the global refugee crisis told through the eyes of a child. If everyone read this book, we have a lot more empathy for those crossing dangerous waters to find freedom. This book won multiple Canadian awards, including The Giller Prize (one of Canada’s most prestigious) and lives rent free in my head ❤

Salt to the Sea is amazing. I wish I would have read it as a teen because it would have really given me a different perspective on WWII but glad to have read it as an adult. thank you for reminding me I need to read Persepolis. requesting from my library now! I think it may only be part 1 but I'll see when it gets to me.

This was really great to watch, thank you! I think splitting it up into 10 videos is perfect, because yeah, we get to hear more in depth thoughts on it, than just speedrunning a list of 100 books. Definitely added a few to my TBR. I don't have any recs atm as brain is mush from pre-travel packing and high heat, haha, but def excited to see the next ten books whenever you get a chance to work on it.

James Baldwin is the best American writer of all time. I’m a nerd, so after already finishing the homework during class, I peeked at other works in my middle school English textbook I found an essay of Baldwin’s on the importance of education. I later asked my teacher if we were gonna read that as a class, and she kind of laughed me off, and I will never understand why James Baldwin isn’t on all school curriculum.
