My camera goes in and out of focus halfway through y’all! I’m not sure what happened 😂

I did the Amazing Readathon in August 2023. It was super fun but it put me into a slump for a month or two afterwards. I decided not to do it in June to protect my reading life knowing that I would be on vacation the next month (ie right now.) A reading slump on top of jet lag just isn’t my cup of tea.

Yeah I've never been one for reading challenges because I only ever read before I go to bed and I'm just a very slow reader in general, but I do feel like I'm missing out on something from not being able to participate. I think there is a conversation to be had on reading just for reading's sake though since I feel like these days we are encouraged to read a lot in short spaces of time and the effects it can have on our reading habits, discussions on book communities and publishing as a whole. Also I'm not a romance person myself but you 100% sold me on Role Playing because online spaces are so hostile to anyone on the ace spectrum that it sounds like a carthartic read to have someone willing to stand up for their partner.

Yes I am actually a scholar and read and write for a living but I can never keep up with these reading challenges. I enjoy prompts sometimes just for help in deciding what book of something I already have or is already on my radar to read next but I’m not going to just race through a book for the sake of saying I read it.

Your locs! So thick and long and beautiful! As another natural and locs girl, It’s been fun to watch the hair journey through years of this channel.

(commenting at the top of the video, still watching lol, but i love talking colors) I agree, that shade of green DOES look great on you!! It might just be the camera affecting it, but from my side it could also be a bright shade of sage green 🥰 not quite as blue-ish as mint can be, and looks great with your warm gold undertones. "Duck egg blue" is in a similar family, kind of like powder blue, but a little more of a desaturated warm tone (just in case you wanted some very specific colors to look up when shopping around lol)

I am sloooowly trying to catch up on some BookTube lol. I so agree on authors assuming that they can write any genre and age category! I feel like that happens a LOT with adult writers suddenly going 'oh I can write middle grade, that's so easy' 😑 I was definitely seeing Role Playing around but I wasn't sure if I was going to try it - but the way you talk about the couple and the rep has me interested!

My numbers for the amazing readathon was 72. Which is crazy for me. I knew your numbers were going to be out of this world. I was so excited seeing your face in our chats. I signed up because of your video. I completely agree that our leaders were amazing.

I had a very mid reading month in June, and like you I did the amazing readathon and i found it quite stressful. I did reread A wizard's guide to defensive baking by T. Kingfisher, which i love. And I loved Tender Beasts by Liselle Sambury.

Thank you for sharing your feelings on The Reappearance of Rachel Price. I just finished it this past weekend and it was an absolute chore to get through because of the choppy writing, the lack of character voice, and the Scooby-Doo level complexity of the whole ending. You're so right when you say it was lackluster and unengaging.

Role Playing was definitely one of my favorite reads last month. Homie is also amazing! Sorry you had so many misses but the hits you had were HITS!

I'm sorry that such a big reading month came out with so few faves for you. But I'm glad you liked Danez Smith -- I love their poetry too! My favorite book of June was The Deep Dark by Molly Knox Ostertag (though if we're not looking at graphic novels, then on a completely different vibe, Rat Bohemia by Sarah Schulman was my favorite novel).

Homie is so good & I will be reading it again! I was just looking for a romance to listen to so Role Playing will be it!

The color looks really good on you~! I've had Role Playing on my TBR, and didn't know about the demi rep! That's so awesome. I'm hoping to read it in the next few months for sure. My least favorite read, which still got a solid 3 stars was The Actor & the Earl by Rebecca Cohen. I'm a sucker for crossdressing stories and thought this was going to be fun and interesting, but the male love interest just had to many red flags and being all "I can change, it won't happen again" and yeah.. My favorite has been me binging the Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells, and just was a great break from sub par romances I was reading for a book club. Great snark and fast reads in a good way. I also finally finished another book that I took a break from, mainly cause I wasn't too in the mood, but it made my heart sing, haha. And that surprised me since it's mostly a smut book. Last Courtesan of Olympus by Amanda Meuwissen is so so good, and so smutty. Gives CWs for each part and manages to make you have sympathy for every Olympian god, and just a bit (as a treat) for Zeus (but still acknowledging his...everything lol). Can't wait for your Comics Realm video, and hopefully July will have overall better reading experiences for you~

June Faves: The Firekeeper’s Daughter, I Who Have Never Known Men, A History of Basketball in 15 Sneakers, All The Barren Parts June Not Faves: In From The Cold (3 short stories set in cattle-country in the USA), Rema Chronicles Ps I too think the mint green v-neck top with ruched cap sleeves looks great on you 😍 (can you tell my mother taught fashion at the university level?😂)

Yeah; I admit the read-a-thon is not a thing for me :); I can swing read alongs, but I am also something of a mood reader. Role Playing was lovely. On KU there is a a Midlife fantasy book set PWF - I am not 100% sure on the demographics of it; but may be mostly white authors. Favorites for June - Winter Lost by Patti Briggs; Perks of Being a Villainess novel wrap up; and well not sure it was a favorite but it was binge worthy Lola Glass Deceit & Devotion, Wildwood and Mate Mountain trilogies - will finish Mate Mountain when book 3 releases this month.

A lot of new releases are meh. The covers are better than the books. I have theories as to why. I’m trying to slow down on buying new books and go back to older titles and browsing the library.
