Hey folks...thought I'd start a new #100daysofpractice series based on my Editions Bim book "100 Days of Trumpet Practice." I'll do my best to post one a week; if I'm successful, I'll finish this series by the end of 2026 😅
Some of these will be super easy, esp. at first, but some of the later ones will be tough to be record.
So, let's start with Day 1!
This is some good ol' James Stamp, super simple, but with an emphasis on ear-training. As it says in the book: "One of the most challenging and crucial elements of brass technique is our need to hear pitch with great accuracy - indeed, the same degree of accuracy required of a great singer."
So, don't do a test note on the trumpet before you start...see if you can hear the pitch, and then check AFTERWARDS, as I do at the end of the video.
Depending on your confidence, level, you can check your pitch at any time, and multiple times during the exercise if you want.
It says 5-10 minutes, and I get through it in about 2, but in an actual practice session I'd take more time to address some of the wobbly attacks/releases in the video.
In my opinion, the most overlooked element of brass playing these days is development of CONCEPT - i.e., what do you want this to sound like? This includes sound quality, articulation, and musical impetus, as well as something so fundamental as pitch.
This is why details-oriented listening is so important; you want YOUR IDEA OF THE SOUND to drive the trumpet - not some abstract notion of notes on a page and the right fingering, which is how most of us start off.
